Fielding question

I spent so long trying to figure this out, to no avail. Google has not helped me, nor has the in-game instructions, so I ask here. Just how the heck do you SLIDE as a fielder?

Sliding as a fielder is an animation that is triggered by the game.

The dive or jump button doesn't play this animation in my experience

Due to the limitation of animations, it would be a difficult problem to align slides, tags, etc while still looking realistic if we allowed a player to start a slide whenever they wanted.

But...

If you do not have Auto Sliding set to ON, the right analog stick can be used to *influence* the slide of the selected base runner (i.e. right/left of base and head/feet first). This input obviously has to be given before the slide has started.

I believe he was referring to slides by the fielders, while playing defense... As in, sliding to make a catch.

I found out on accident the other day you can push r1 with the ball to dive and tag the base. My pitcher was late covering 1st when he recieved the feed from the first baseman so I just pushed cause he was clearly not gonna beat him to the bag. I loled when that actually worked, I had no idea.

It would be possible, but I have no idea where it would lie on the priority list.

I would love this option. Now there are situations where the ball is just too far away to get to but a little too close to dive. The option to trigger a sliding field play would be great!

Yes this! I love this game but diving for ground balls is disappointing. Can't tell you how many times I dive and the ball goes by my players elbow because the arm is fully extended and it doesn't adjust st to where the ball is. So I stopped diving and the balls are just out of reach. It gets frustrating but I still really enjoy this game.
