Congratulations to Houston.
Houston’s story really touched me and he in turn is passing his copy along to a close friend in need and less fortunate than him.

Re: The Magic Of Baseball and What it means to you.
This was really cool of you to do, Armor. It allowed for some really nice, heartwarming stories to be shared and shows that although this is "just a game" to a lot of people, it can also mean so much more than that.Comment

Re: The Magic Of Baseball and What it means to you.
It's funny how the littlest things can have lasting memories, especially in baseball. Whether it's the first time you went to a big-league park, or it's playing catch with your pops in the back yard. No sports quite has that magic of baseball.
So many Cubs memories, the clinchers in '89 and '84. And, of course, the World Series in 2016. But all Cub fans remember those. So I'm going with something different.
One particular game I've always been obsessed with was Game 5 of the 1989 NLCS. Even though the Cubs lost, and that meant they were eliminated from the playoffs, I'll never forget one thing about that day. You see, I was 8 at the time. Game 5 took place on Monday, October 9th, Columbus Day, and we went on a family trip somewhere that weekend. I remember hearing the Cubs had lost that Wednesday, but won that Thursday. That was puzzling, because I didn't know the playoffs were a best-of-7 contest, I remembered the Bears losing a playoff game to the 49ers in January, and that was it. But apparently baseball was different.
That Saturday and Sunday night, I'll never forget my mother comforting me as Giants' closer Steve Bedrosian nailed both of them down. I thought for sure the season was over, the Cubs have been doing all that losing. How could they still be alive?
But when we got home the next afternoon, my dad had told me that the Cubs were on. And there they were! They we still alive, they still had a chance! I was planning on playing "Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link" that day to drown out my Cubbie sorrows, but the Cubs were playing at that very moment.
And that's what I'll never forget, that feeling of joy. Knowing that my team was still in it. That feeling changed after the Cubs had lost, of course. But thinking that I had to wait until 1990 to watch the next game I had so badly wanted to see, but yet they were still playing. It's that feeling I remember.
In a lot of ways, baseball was more magical when I didn't understand each and every thing that was going on.
And if I thought the Cubs lost bad in the NLCS, you should have seen my battle against Helmethead.Last edited by Herschie; 03-23-2018, 09:20 AM.Would the lady who left her nine kids at Wrigley Field please pick them up immediately? They are beating the Cubs 4-0 in the 7th inning!Comment

Re: The Magic Of Baseball and What it means to you.
My dad is not a sports fan, so I didn't grow up around the ballpark by any means. He's been to 1 Mariners game in his life, that I am aware of. I also knew at a very young age my only chance to get a set of wheels was to get a job after school, and work odd jobs, so I can't say I played much baseball either.
I owe my love of baseball to 3 things;
George.Kenneth.Griffey,Jr.. Atlanta Braves baseball on TBS, sports gaming.
I'll start with Junior.. I was 13 the year he made it to the Majors.. what a ride. More enjoyable than I could ever express in words. '94 he was robbed of his shot to break the home run record, he was absolutely on fire. '95 was AMAZING! Such a great ride. Saved baseball in Seattle, without question. I was CRUSHED when Griffey was traded. Crushed. That was a peice of my soul I will never get back.
.. and its just crazy to me that team had 4 Hall of Famers, Junior, A-Rod, Big Unit & Edgar, yet they never won anything signifigant.
I also loved watching the Braves in that same period, paticularly Glavine and Smoltz. That battle Smoltz and Jack Morris had was EPIC, and one I'll never forget. Glavine was awesome. Then of course, Maddux had that absurd run in the mid-90s when he signed. Loved watching those teams.
World Series Baseball for Sega also cemented my love of the game. Logged a TON of hours on that series. Pitched a perfect game with John Smoltz in the '95 version, one of my favorite gaming memories.
I enjoy The Show more than I enjoy the Majors. I don't expect the game itself will ever captivate me the way it did in my teens, and early adulthood. Its just not the same for me now. I guess love for baseball is more nostalgia, in the truest sense of the word. You want free speech?
Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.Comment

Re: The Magic Of Baseball and What it means to you.
Really cool that you did this A&S!
Past the deadline, but I'll share another story as to the magic of baseball.
Parents put me into baseball when I was 6, and turns out I was pretty good at it. More than being good at it though, I just really loved the game. I love the games, I loved the practices, and I loved going in my back yard spending hours every day pitching against a wall & playing soft toss with myself. Sometimes I would start to get burned out by the end of fall season, but like clock-work every January I had the itch again. It also didn't hurt being an Atlanta kid born in the late 80's being able to grow up watching Avery, Glavine, Maddux, Smoltz, Chipper, Andrew, McGriff, and Bobby Cox over there on the sidelines.
That part of the story is probably not too dissimilar to what most people have experienced. What made me truly appreciate baseball though was this. One night at 16 years old I was playing 2nd base and in the middle of the game and I noticed an egg shaped lump on my forearm that was causing progressively more tightness in my arm. I left the game for the ER where they did some blood work. A day or 2 later I go for a follow up and I'm told that I have a rare blood disorder and can't play baseball (or any sports for that matter). I always enjoyed baseball before, but as the saying goes you never really know what you have until it's gone.
The story isn't all bad. It took 3 years of constant visits to the hospital for treatments, but I'm better now. The reason I'm sharing though is this. I always really enjoyed baseball, even at those times near the end of the final season where I would get a little burned out. When it was taken from me I truly realized how big a part of my life it was. Now, I was always a sports fanatic. I took every opportunity to play a game of football, basketball, or anything I could. For those 3 years of not being able to do anything physically active though the one constant on my mind I want to get better just to so that I can get back on the diamond. Finally, at 19 years old as a freshmen in college I had a splenectomy which remedied my problem, and 1 week after the surgery I was attending a workout for a local adult baseball rec league.

Re: The Magic Of Baseball and What it means to you.
Baseball got my undivided attention when Kirk Gibson hit that home run in 1988. I was 8 years old. I was instantly hooked. The next season I spent learning the game. I started playing little league ball the following year. That's how it started.
My little brother and I were never close. We always fought. A referee was needed when we were in the same room. Baseball changed all of that. He was fascinated as much as I was I was when he got older. The summers were spent waiting for the cubs to come on wgn in the afternoons. We both are huge Dodgers fans because we grew up in L.A. but the cubbies hold a special place in our hearts.
Fast forward to when I got my drivers license and my first job. Him and I spent our summers going to Angels and Dodgers games. We both remember meeting Tommy Lasorda and Maury Wills at a Dodgers game. Now him and I are usually not at a loss for words but when we met them we both forgot how to speak the English language.
Now him and I are on our 30's. We live 1000 miles apart now but there is no one I enjoy talking baseball with more than him. Baseball has brought him and I close together. For the next 6 months I will talk to him 3 or 4 times a week about the Dodgers and everything thing else going on between the foul lines.
Armor when you posted this topic I started to reply numerous times but never could put into words what this game means to me. I still am not sure this justifies what it means to me but it is a start.

Edit-sorry just noticed you asked what the code is for. I’m almost positive it’s for 10 standard packs for preordering. Thanks again!
