Re: Official MLB 18 : Road to the Show Thread

Speaking of CAPs, if I am not mistaken people are also saying that they have not seen the ability to increase the Arm Strength category.

I tried something yesterday with a RTTS SS I created from scratch in MLB 18 and this SS is in early July of his first season after a recent promotion to AAA. I had no plans in saving this progression, but I wanted to see where he would be by the end of his first year and beginning of his second year. So I simmed all his games and he ended the year still in AAA (as expected) and then signed a new contract during the offseason to be the AAA starter. However he was invited to Spring Training where I also simmed the games (without saving) and he started the year in the Show on the bench. The reason why I bring this all up is that as I was simming the 2nd half of his first year I pretty much only chose options to increase his current CAP values in various categories and only way his skills were going to progress was during his simulated game play. So he went from a 69 to a 71 (which was expected for simulated results). But not once did I come across the option of increasing his arm strength attribute in this first season. There were times where I could increase the Arm Strength CAP but since there was plenty of room to improve in this category, it did not make sense to increase the CAP. So for those who are into their 2nd, 3rd or 4th years does the game allow you to increase the Arm Strength attribute values?

What other categories are like Discipline and Arm Strength?

As you know, Arm strength and plate discipline are both trainable in between series. Arm strength isn't trained "in game"....but discipline is. I'm in year 3, technically 2019 as I imported a player from 17. I highly recommend extending the cap and/or training both when you are presented the opportunity, especially arm strength. Most of the time I get it as a 3rd category with Power L and Power R. Plate discipline was the easiest of all the attributes for me to develop as you score in that category everytime you take a ball and I generally see alot of pitches and work deep in counts. Just have to make sure you keep the cap stretched out there. For some it's not an important attribute but for me it is as I check ALOT of swings. Arm strength is easily the most difficult for me to develop so far. I complained about it early after release back in this thread somewhere as could tell immediately it was going to be slow to develop. Also.... if you have a created player that you like to run/steal bases with.... stealing is also hard to develop for me. You get penalized for getting picked off and stealing for me in this year's version of the game is as hard as it every has been.

Just as a follow up to your post....some things to keep in mind that I'm focused on now but wish I had earlier. I play every fielding opportunity, every at bat, and my baserunning early on in my career is set to "action pitches".

        - Plate vision, plate discipline, fielding, reaction, arm accuracy and durability are all attributes that you get tons of points off of "in game". I don't focus a great deal on training these in my between game workouts and 2X points opportunities.
        - Contact and Power are a double edged sword of sorts. There are plenty of opportunities in game but there are also equal amounts of opportunity to get penalized so the attributes can cancel each other out and "stall". It depends on how dominant/consistent your player is. I personally poured alot of points on contact and power. Once I got my hitter to a comfortable spot I started looking at points elsewhere.
        - I try to keep as many categories open as possible. If I'm at cap on an attribute I'll take extending the cap over training for points in another open category. Nothing worse than watching in game bonuses flash up on your screen game after game that you know are just wasted and capped off.
        - Play all of your coach training opportunities in the field and at the plate. These are easy ways to increase your attributes. Just make sure you have the cap open. I have sat through a whole bat control session only to figure out that I was at my cap and it was a waste of time.
        - Take advantage of equipment boosts. I haven't spent any real money on stubs and I have a ton of equipment for my player. This is a personal preference I guess but I use in game rewards and stubs for the things I want in my RTTS saves. I have a gold bat, gold batting glove, diamond cleats, diamond ritual, etc equipped on my player. Gold equipment is pretty cheap and gives some pretty good attribute boosts. These obviously help you hit and field above what you are baseline rating is rated out. Look at the different combinations of equipment types to increase things as much as possible in the weaker areas of your archetype. I flip cards in the market to earn stubs to use in RTTS. I've turned my player into a 5 tool player or close to it with the the defensive cannon archetype.

If I think of any other things I'll post....

Thanks for the post. I play at a much slower pace than most as I play full games where all players from both teams bat for every pitch of every inning of the games. But it is helpful to hear what others have experienced who play at a faster pace. I do have a RTTS SS who plays faster pace games like you describe, but right now my mindset is to not use him past his AAA career as I really want my main 2B player to be the one who gets to experience being called up to the Show.

Anyway my main 2B RTTS character just rolled over into the month of June, he's two weeks away for the AA All Star game where I expect him to be promoted to AAA and I have definitely adopted the increase CAPs over attributes in most categories for the training days for this first year of his young career because as you have pointed out there are a number of categories where we get plenty of attribute progression in our games that we play. I have however used Contact L and Power L attribute increases to improve my guy's skills against southpaws since we do face far more righties in the game than we do lefties and of course I have participated in the couple of coach training opportunities since they are kind of free attribute progressions.

Presently the Discipline category is the only one at the risk of being capped, so I will keep my eyes open for it (and I do not auto save my games so I can always reload if I don't like my training options). But for the remainder of my first year I do plan on prioritizing increasing CAPs over attributes. However I will keep an eye open for Speed and Arm Strength attribute increases as well as possibly Contact and Power attribute increases when there is plenty of CAP room left available.

Finally yes I do use equipment in all categories except for catcher gear since I do not catch. Now I do not play DD, so I quick sold all of my DD player cards and all other collectibles like bobble heads, etc, etc, etc and bought Gold equipment with the stubs. Diamond is better, but Diamond gear is ridiculously expense and the performance improvements of Diamond over Gold does not make sense for the added cost. I did however get Diamond Socks in a recent Rewards Pack, so that was a nice surprise. I am saving up for a Diamond bat where I quick sell all rewards I receive moving forward. I figure it will take me a couple of months, but it should happen sometime later this summer. But other than that, it's Gold gear for me unless the game wants to gift me some more Diamond stuff.

Man..... the rain games are driving me insane. SDS needs to tone it down or give the option to turn the weather OFF. I get that it's a feature they want to incorporate but NO ONE plays baseball in the monsoon conditions I play in for entire series at Atlanta. Delay the game....postpone it to a double header....enhance it in SOME way. Playing an entire 3 or game series in a downpour is annoying and dumb. The bunts are the other thing that drive me insane. Bases loaded 2 out bunts with tyler flowers? 2 out runner on 2nd and Freddie Freeman bunts?? Maybe I need to take a break.

On a positive note..... longest HR of season so far. Finally cracked the 500 ft. mark.

I have to ask. I want to create a pitcher that has low velo. Like, 88-91 4 seam velo, but I don't think this is possible. Am I mistaken? Is there a way to create a low velo guy?

Speaking of bunts. As someone who controls a 2B player in the game, when the opposition's batter is laying down a sacrifice bunt, my 1B is rushing into to field it. If they can tag the bunter they will, otherwise they need to look to either the pitcher or the 2B player to be covering the 1st base bag and on more then one occasion I was covering the 1st base bag but the 1B player has yet to throw the ball to me. I've seen him try and out run the base runner which is crazy why didn't he just tag the base runner. Plus I have seen him underhand a throw to the pitcher but the pitcher was too far away or too slow to make the play. I will continue to run over to the bag, but I am wondering if anyone has made the play.

I'm pretty sure if you choose control freak or plain filthy your velo will be fairly low for your first pitch.

Imported a player from 17, a SS with five-tool player written all over him and got drafted by the Pirates. That team is FUN to play with; there’s a ton of speed in the top half of the order (including my guy).

The pitching...well, let’s just say a dumpster fire would be prettier to look at.

Sitting at a 96 OVR and with Contacts and Powers in the 80s and 70s respectively, but I can’t for the life of me hit. I’m sitting at a God awful .196 ten games in. Making good contact, have decent plate discipline, IDK WTF is going on.

My other RTTS sees me as a catcher hitting .367 with 40 HRs in three months of play. Haven’t seemed to find that balance yet.

quick question, does this mode have a automatic retirement age for your rtts player and if so, what is it?

I also want to clarify the difficulty settings. If i read it correctly lets say my difficulty was veteran.... according to what i read double A would actually be rookie mode, triple A would be veteran and MLB would be all star. is that correct?

I was flirting with 20 RBIs over ten games but I was really aggressive on base; even with the pickoff slider turned all the way down, I was still being caught between 1st and 2nd. Still getting used to the baserunning, but it also doesn’t help that the fielder with the ball can suddenly turn, halfway through throwing the ball, and throw to a different base.

Thanks for the head's up. We will look into why this is the case.

On the surface, it does not make much sense at all.

anyone have issues with losing their equipment boosts around all star break time? I first thought it was because I finally edited my worn equipment items and it somehow bugged it so that I was no longer getting boosts while playing.

The game before the all star break is when I first noticed it. Tried to reequip items but it didn't help. HR Derby was played with 59 power because I was getting my boosts and the all star game had no boosts.

But game 1 back from all star break and the boosts are back working.
