Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

After only giving up 3 runs or more once in a 4-2 stretch and my bullpen finally showing signs of life I got pounded by the A's last night.

Martin Perez took the start and gave up 5 runs in the first 2 innings, Bartolo Colon came in to eat up some innings and in his second inning of work I walked the bases loaded and gave up a 471 ft grand slam to Kris Davis. Down 9-0 I kept them honest fighting back and making it 9-4. After 3 innings of work from Colon I brought in Chris Martin who struggled and gave up 4 runs and the A's once again had a 9 run lead 13-4. Eventually we lost 13-8.

Perez has been awful, after a win last time out I thought he was coming around but he's 1-3 with an ERA near 7.00

I made quite a few mistake pitches and they didn't miss them but it was one of those games where they hit everything hard even when I made the pitch I wanted to make.

9-16 on the season just a 1/2 game ahead of the A's for last place in the West.

Texas Rangers Update: Season 1 MOM

The Rangers currently sit in dead last place as we near the end of June. 80 games in to the season and we sit at 31-49. We are 30th in pitching and hitting and it has just been an abysmal season. I can't really say why, as injuries have not really been a problem as in the real life Rangers. I lost Deshields for 2 weeks and Choo recently went down for 2 weeks with tightness in his ham string. One positive is the play of 19 year old Leody Tavaras. What a surprise. He started the year as my 4th outfielder but is currently in left field. Here is a breakdown as we get ready to make a move in July in the trade market

      C- Chirinos- 220 hitter 11 HR's
1B- Gallo- 195 with only 5 Hr's. A major disappointment that may get traded in the next 2 weeks
      2b- Odor- 240 with 14 HR's
SS- Elvis- Solid future HOF Just cant do it all himself
3B- Beltre- Solid its just as in every brand of the Show he declines based on age and not performance. Started season as an 89 and now he is an 81. No reason, solid season but he is 39 so the developers feel he has to decline I guess. I wish that they would fix this.
      LF- Tavaras
CF Deshields- 195. Very disappointing and a target for a trade in July
RF Mazara- Slow start in April but has really picked it up in June
DH- Choo- Injured so surprising Nicholas plays DH and he has been good

      Pitching

1.Hamels- Terrible season 5-8 with ERA at 5.9
      2. Edinson Volquez- Ok not great
      3. Mike Minor- Only starter whose ERA is under 4
      4. Fister- Coming off DL he has been Ok
      5. Perez- Terrible- ERA close to 6

That's it. We are currently on a 4 game winning streak. Just hard to get excited when 80 games in your 17.5 games out of first

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

We lost the rubber match to the Cubs, dropping the series, making it our second straight drop series as we lost 3 out of 4 against the Reds.

I'm thinking that I may have over-reacted to not winning the division last year and losing the wildcard game and made roster changes to "get better" when I had a winning formula in place for the most part. (same thing when I signed MadBum last year) I think it may be time to make some roster moves to put the original pieces back in place, for the most part and see what happens over the next 4 weeks of baseball.

We are no where near out of the running or even close to it, but it doesn't seem as though this 25 man roster construction is going to yield the results and more importantly the type of baseball that put us in the playoffs 3 straight years, with 2 NL Central Division crowns and 2 trips to the NLCS.

        Time for re-evaluation.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Currently 3-0 on the season in my newly minted San Deigo Padres franchise. This team has some great prospects in the minors and some youth on the MLB level as well but my overall impressions so far is that by seasons in we are gonna have to address the power issue this team is having. I made some free agent pickups to start the season to help the starting rotation and bullpen. I picked up the usual suspects in Tony Zych and Trevor Rosenthal (everyone seems to pickup one or two of those guys in their franchises) and I also scooped up starting pitchers Henerson Alverez and John Lacky. As for position players I picked up Carlos Ruiz as my backup catcher. Some sentalimental value with that pickup as I'm a Phillies fan so I wanted to reunite him with Freddy Galvis at least for this season. I made two small trades to acquire Mark Trumbo for some power and Yasmany Thomas to come off the bench. Outside of that the roster is pretty much what they have in real life and it ain't all that great lol.

I've won games so far by scoring runs early and doing what I can with the pitching staff as they really aren't that great of a staff. The hitters are mostly guys who can create good contact and then make something happen when they get on base via the steal, or the threat of it at least but through those 3 games I've only hit one home run. Most of my hits consist of singles and timing doubles when runners are on base but it's been a struggle getting used to these guys as I've played with nothing but Phillies players since getting the game. It's a bit of a challenge but one that I'm really interested in. I already have my eyes set on the trade deadline and this upcoming offseason. I'll look to acquire Ceasar Hernandez via trade from the Phillies to open up 2B for Scott Kingery and I may also think about getting RF Domingo Santana from the Brewers as he's not even starting for them at the moment. Just played my 3 game series vs the brew crew and he was used as a pinch hitter only. I'm thinking about moving Wil Myers back into the infield next season.

The big fish I'll try to get during the offseason though will be Manny Machado. If I can also get some starting pitching during the offseason while my prospects continue to develop, we may have a contender in the next few years.

Another update to my Tiger's Franchise page.

54-16 with the Tigers, 6.5 up on the Indians. Just swept the Twins. 8 game road trip in Chicago, Cincinnati, and Cleveland coming up next.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

After the rough start against Boston, the Rays have bounced back by winning 5 in a row against the Twins and Mariners, with the bats finally managing to coordinate their hits and result in some offence. Then came a tough two losses in a row to the Blue Jays, both games we were comfortably ahead when our starts Archer and Faria left in the 7th, only to give up 6 runs in the first game to lose 10-6, then repeat the feat by giving up 3 runs the next day to blow a 4-2 lead.

The starters have generally been excellent, but the bullpen has been terrible, with 5 of our 7 relievers currently with ERA in the double figures. That will have to improve as it's unrealistic to expect the starters to carry on so hot.

The new guys, Travis Jankoswki (.368), Jung-ho Kang (.342, 2HR) and Adrien Beltre (.308, 2HR) have carried the offence so far, along with the baffling Saltalamchia who only has 6 hits on the season, but 5 of them have left the park! Dylan Cozens might be on thin ice as the platoon DH experiment was always a little odd, but he's been a bit homerun or out as well, hitting under the Mendoza line with a couple of homers.

All in all, better than expected so far at 7-5 but we need to sort the bullpen out in a hurry.

Going to start and hopefully stick to a franchise tonight... My pick? The Orioles. I'm going to try and keep Machado and build around him the right way. Between him and Mancini the future is bright.... The pitching in the other hand... Eep

Went to plenty of O's games as a kid living in Maryland. Still one of the best stadiums in baseball after all these years. My first RTTS player was an Orioles player. I had a blast playing with him in Camden before OSFM rosters were released.

                      Speaking of rosters...

Gleyber Torres and Ronald Acuna were called up, will The Show game have their names added (commentary) now? This is my first year playing this game.

                        End of Season - 2019

The 2019 season is over and it is officially the 5th worst in team history. We finished at 63-99. Tied with the White Sox for the worst record in the Majors. Its our worst season since 2006 when we lost 100 games. Next season should look about the same. Our top prospects will be spending majority if not all of the season in the minors again. We should start to see some improvement in 2021.

                        MLB Standings
                        Spoiler

After 4 teams broke 100 wins last year only the Dodgers were able to do it this year. They lead the league with 110 wins last year and ended up being swept in the divisional round. Lets see how it goes for them this year.

The offense had a slight improvement over last year. We hit .252/.317/.398. We scored 635 runs. Tied with the Reds for 17th. We were dead last in doubles with 228. Tied for 15th in Triples with 29. 13th in HR with 179. The 2nd most in team history behind 2017. We were 18th with 97 SB and 17th with a 63% success rate.

                        Stats
                        Spoiler

Where the hell did Jorge Bonifacio get that power. The most HR he ever hit in the minors was 19. He did that in 134 games. Came back from him suspension last year and hit 5 in 69 games. I was expecting him to hit like 15 this year.

Ryan O'Hearn couldnt quite keep up with his strong first half. After hitting 17 HR in 96 games before the All Star Break he was only able to hit just 8 in the 66 games after. Ended up leading the team in walks with 75. Overall a solid season.

Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez both performed well above expectations. Gordon ended up with a .795 OPS. His highest since 2015. His 4.3 WAR was his highest since 2012. Salvador Perez had by far the best season of his career. His 5.8 WAR, 73 Runs, 83 RBI and .813 OPS were all career highs. He also tied his career high in HR with 27.

It was a pretty disappointing season for everyone else. Whit Merrifield missed a good chunk of the season. Jorge Soler did a complete 180 from his 2nd half last year. Cheslor Cuthbert was a total let down after being our best player last season. Raul Mondesi was about what I expected after a good 2nd half but he has a lot of room for improvement. And then you have Hunter Dozier and Bubba Starling. 2 of the worst hitters in the majors. Bubba was at least hurt for some time. Both will need to do some impressive things in ST to start next year on the team.

Our pitching was once again the biggest issue on the team. Our 4.48 ERA was 2nd worst in the Majors. The AL Central ended up with the 3 worst ERA's. We were 1 of 4 teams with no complete games and tied with the Tigers for the least amount of Shutouts with 5. We did fix some of our issues with the HR. We allowed the most last year with 197. This year we were 20th with 183 allowed.

                        Stats
                        Spoiler

Duffy put up the best season of his career by WAR. Had his first 200 IP and 200 SO season. His 3.28 ERA was his lowest since 2014.

Nate Karns somehow put up 3 WAR. I get he should have been better based off his FIP but should only gets you so far.

Jake Junis didnt have the year he or a lot of people thought he would. After putting up an ERA under 4 last year he was never got going before missing a couple months with a separated shoulder. When he came back it was a lot of the same. Hopefully a healthy year in 2020 will get him back on track.

A.J. Cole showed promise here and there but overall was a bad year. Nolan Watson was a lot of the same. Good his first month or so then completely crapped the bed to finish the year. Both will have a chance to earn a spot in the rotation next spring.

As for the pen Kelvin Herrera and Brandon Mauer were the only guys consistently producing. Kyle Zimmer showed promise 8 years after being drafted. Everyone else was just trash. If one thing stops us from being good in a couple years the BP will be the reason.

Well fellow Show enthusiasts. I am about to embark on my version of the 2018 Atlanta Braves. I made a few trades. Brought some favs and I got us a possible "Ace"! I must admit I always have pitched well with Teheran. He is still in my ro.

                              Starting Rotation:
                              1.Chris Archer (New) Ace
                              2.Brandon McCarthy
                              3.Julio Teheran
                              4. Folty
                              5. Luis Gohara (lil C.C.)

                              Bullpen:

What a game the Padres just had against the Giants! A 12-3 win by the Friars and we are now 14-3 on the young season. Side note: Our most recent game was against the Giants as I just said and they had lefty Madison Bumgarner on the mound. We knocked him around early and he ended up getting replaced in the 5th I think for another lefty. A couple innings later after we scored even more runs they bring in another lefty. I've seen this trend three times now since playing this game that a team has brought in more lefties after the starting pitcher who is a lefty had a hard time with our all right batting lineup. I dont get it. Anyway....

On the young season both our pitching and hitting has been way better than I expected. The Padres dont have the strongest pitching staff/bullpen and that's really an understatement but I've gotten some really good performances from Tyson Ross (4-0, 26 SO, 2.25 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), John Lackey (3-0, 29 SO, 3.16 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), Henderson Alverez (3-0, 16 SO, 0.42 ERA, 0.88 WHIP), Dinelson Lamet (2-1, 26 SO, 3.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) and Scott Kazmir (1-0, 11 SO, 3.38 ERA, 1.45 WHIP). The bullpen has been pretty solid too with closer Brad Hand with 6 saves so far and Trevor Rosenthal not surrendering a single earned run so far this season. Carter Capps has also impressed me with his 13 strikeouts, 1.13 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.

On the hitting side of things, we are led by guys like Wil Myers (16 GMS, 17 HITS, 14 RBI, 3 HRS, .333 AVERAGE), Jose Pirela (16 GMS, 18 HITS, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 2 SB, .300 AVERAGE), Eric Hosmer (15 GMS, 20 HITS, 1 HR, 7 RBI, .370 AVERAGE), Mark Trumbo (15 GMS, 20 HITS, 7 HR, 19 RBI, .345 AVERAGE), Manuel Margot (14 GMS, 18 HITS, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 SB, .333 AVERAGE) and Yasmany Thomas (11 GMS, 10 HITS, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .357 AVERAGE).

And then we have rookies Miguel Estrella who has 15 hits, 3 homers, 7 RBI and a .278 average in 24 games and Joaquin Dorin with 7 hits (all timely hits when we really needed them), 8 RBI and a .368 average in 5 games played. Exciting stuff. Was thinking I would probably get rid of some guys by seasons end up if this team can continue to grow, win at a good clip and potentially make a playoff push I may just stick with the roster as is (with a couple tweaks) and see if I can really build something here. Hitting, pitching and throwing are all on all star btw with the only slider change being my fastball and pitch speeds raised both to 7.
