Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Opponents haven't had much difficulty roughing up the Rangers over the past few games. It happened again Wednesday night... With one out and the bases loaded, Austin Barnes dribbled what appeared to be a sure out at home in front of reliever Matt Bush. However, the veteran right-hander's throw home pulled catcher Carlos Perez off the plate, allowing Enrique Hernandez to maneuver his way to home plate for the winning run. Rangers manager Jeff Banister said the ending was "pretty much" heartbreaking to see, having watched his team battle over the course of the game. Bush's errant throw serves as perhaps serves as the most consequential play of the evening. The result marked the Rangers' season-high sixth straight loss. The loss wasted a solid outing by starting left-hander Cole Hamels, who kept their homer-happy opponent quiet on the evening. Hamels tossed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks. He struck out six batters.

Ok, admittedly is not my write-up, its a an actual MLB write-up from last night's Ranger game. But it perfectly describes our game last night, even Hamels, except the error was a different player throwing to a different base. It also goes on to describe the last several games we've played (we have lost 4 in a row).

Its nice when the game is so realistic you can just copy and paste MLB articles from the same evening to describe your game. Saves some time after another frustrating loss lol.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Not sure if any of you guys have been following along but had been on a much needed vacation for a few weeks but finally got back to my franchise. We are currently 13 games in and have won 11 of them.
We had been struggling at left field with Kyle Schwarber and Eloy Jimenez, but we think we had found the answer. As we had made the trade and traded Schwarber and two A potential pitching prospects to the red sox for Andrew Benintendi. We felt like with Schwarber struggling to even hit .200 and him being spotty on defense that it was time to trade him away and we also feel that benintendi Wilco provide us with a strong bat in the lead off spot.
Theo Epstein had this to say on the trade " we felt that we were at a point where we had to look not to only continue to compete now but in the future down the road, we will continue to draft high quality players, but need to as well look to see how we can continue to get better now." Joe Maddon was also at the press conference and had this to say " Andrew is a very talented player that will give us a spark on both offense and defense." He also said " I feel like Benintendi will give us that much needed bat at the top of the order that we have been looking for since 2016."

With his first game after being traded to the Cubs. Andrew Benintendi was everything the cubs had hope for going 2 for 4 including a lead off homerun on the second pitch of the game. After the game Benintendi had this to say "I was really excited when I heard the Cubs had traded for me, this ballpark and team has so much history and I am excited to help this team back to the world series."

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Something about playing those damned Yankees that even scares me with a video game. Knowing I'd have to concentrate went into Yankee stadium for a two game set.

Tanaka struck me out 11 times in the first game giving up one walk and just 5 hits as I lost 2-1. Game was all tied up 1-1 in the 9th. Didn't bring in my closer, who, but went to set up man Jason Motte (who has been my most consistent relief pitcher). After allowing 2 hits and with a runner on third Andujar hit a fly ball to right field...walk off for the Yankees.

Second game is why I love this game.

                  WA 6 10 0
                  NY 5 8 0

Judge hit a monster home run and we carried a 6-1 lead inito the bottom of the 6th. Yankees scored twice and into the 8th with a 6-3 lead. Motte brought in again in the bottom of the 8th and thru 1/3 of an inning walks a batter gives up 2 hits and 2 runs. Was able to shut them down and kill that "comeback code" (sorry, just had to) and escape with a 6-5 win.

I'll take a split in New York. Yankees remain tied with Boston and I'm 2 games behind the Mets at 35-32 with my fantasy Nats (Bryce Harper nowhere to be found).

I finished my 7th series of year. My Braves played the Mets for the first time this year. I got it handed to me. Mets took the series, winning 3 out of 4..

Game 1: WP Lugo shut my offense down. Hurling 8.0IP,8H,0BB,ER,R & 4K. Folty got rocked early and often. I squeezed out 5.0IP,11H,7R,6ER & 4K. Ouch! Conforto & INF Rivera were the hitting stars for the Mets. Going 5 for 9 with 5 RBI's.

Game 2: Was way more competitive it came down to each team bullpen's. Braves SP Gohara was back on track, well hasn't fell off. Going 7.0IP,6H,1R,0ER,0BB & 7K. He has been throwing top of the rotation stuff in the 5th slot.... Mets SP Gsellman went 5.1IP,6H,2R,1ER,3BB & 4K. He did just enough to hold us at bay. Our old nemesis OF Jay Bruce was one man wrecking crew. He went 3 for 4, 2R,2B,HR & 4RBI's. It has been week since I have completed this series. I still remembered his game winning HR to deep center into to the batter's eye @Suntrust Park. Lost 5-4

Game 3: Was a pitching of young dueling Aces THOR vs. Chris Archer and boy it didnt disappoint. THOR went 7.0IP,4H,0ER,0R,0BB & 6K. But Archer was way up to the task. 8.0IP,4H,0ER,2BB & 9K. We ended up losing 2-1.

Game 4: We finally got back in the winning column. Teheran outdueled & out lasted DeGrom. Julio went 7.0IP,3H,2R,2ER,BB & 7K. DeGrom went 5.0IP,5H,4R,2ER,BB & 6K.
                    1B Freeman was our offensive catalyst. Going 4 for 4,2HR, 3R & 3RBI's. We won 5-2.

Offensively 1B Freeman is ripping it up! I have never played this well with him before. He is hitting for power and average. .392AVG,8HR & 18RBI good for 2nd place in the way tooo early MVP race. LOL.

On the other hand, SP Mike Folthnewicz is an enigma. In 4 starts, the first 2 starts were outstanding and last 2 starts God awful. 4.2IP 4ER and 5.0IP 6ER. I will give him one more start to see if I can keep him up in the major's. I have SP Newcomb in AAA, chomping at the bits to be with the big league club. His stats are: 3 starts 18.1IP,17K, ERA 2.95. The interesting caveat is that Folty and Newcomb both have 2 QS. That is an important stat to me as a good pitcher. Giving your offense a chance to win.

Next series vs. the Reds in Cincy for 4 games.

In the 2019 season the defending 2018 world series champions are currently 15-2 to start the season and the trade for Andrew Benintendi has looked to be a great one so far as in his four games with the Cubs he has really sparked the offense to score 25 run in that span. Also in that span Benintendi is 9 for 21 (.429) over that span with 2 home runs and 4 RBI's. The rest of the team is benefiting from him as well and have all seen better pitches with him leading off and finally getting on base

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

The Marlins went into the draft looking for pitchers and outfielders. Well, they brought back all pitchers and outfielders. Let's see how things look for the kids as they head to the developmental complexes.

                        1st Round - RHP Alejandro Chavez - 18, 69/B
                        Pitches: 4SFB, SL, KN, CH

Alejandro doesn't have a lot of weaknesses, especially for a teenaged pitcher. He seems to have a solid foundation to build on, so he's going to get his pro career started on the right foot. He features a knuckleball, nicknamed "La Mariposa" and it complements a usual assortment: fastball, change, slider. Depending on his other pitches and their velocities, Alejandro might can mix his knuckleball in for very devastating effect and give him ways to use several velocities and movement patterns to befuddle hitters.

He has a good throwing arm, which might manifest itself as a good pickoff threat. Time will tell in that regard. Regardless, Alejandro should be able to help himself on the mound, even when having to make a difficult throw.

                        Comp. Round - LHP John Spillane - 18, 65/B
                        Pitches: 4SFB, SPL, CH, CB

John is an interesting pitcher. He has pretty decent velocity and sound movement on his pitches, but he did not pick up many K's in high school ball. He did, however, demonstrate command and contact management skills that are beyond most high school pitchers. Should this development track continue, he could become a good control pitcher that can keep his pitch counts low while still being effective in and out of the zone.

John is another that has a good throwing arm, so his defensive skills will be monitored closely.

                        2nd round - LF Terry McKinley - 19, 62/C
                        Bats: S, Throws: L, Profile: Groundball/Linedrive

Terry might be looked at as a disappointing selection unless he evolves into something more. The possibility is there as his bat may be major league quality already. What it lacks in power, it makes for in a level swing plane that stays in the hitting zone for a long time. This could allow Terry to drive the ball on a line or grounders up the middle. Defense will be a concern, especially his arm. To call it erratic is being kind. Nothing special on the bases, but won't be detrimental.

                        3rd round - LHP Eric Gonzalez - 19, 66/B
                        Pitches: CUT, CH, SL

Eric focused his repertoire on three primary pitches early in his time on the mound and has stuck with them has he made his way through the high school level. This laser focus helped him turn heads with his effectiveness, but it could become a weakness as he climbs further. Command is his game right now, but he could develop some solid swing and miss capability. Contact management isn't something he toolbox right now. When the ball is hit, it's typically hit hard.

Eric probably will not help himself in the field other than the most routine plays. If he has a pickoff move, it will be because of his footwork more than his arm.

                        4th round - CF Omar Flores - 18, 53/B
Bats: S, Throws: R, Profile: Line drive hitter

Omar is an interesting hitter. He's on the raw side, even for his level, but the habits and approach he has at the plate could make him a consistent hitter in the future if he stay on his current track. At the plate, he will try to put the ball in play, including shortening up with two strikes. This might limit his power output, but it should keep him on most offerings as he matures.

There are couple flags on Omar, however. One is his injury risk. He's had some history of wrist and elbow issues, always a concern especially on someone so young. Perhaps maturity and more advanced conditioning will help alleviate that concern. The other flag is on his defensive tools. His arm could be decent but his quickness and reads on the ball might be a hindrance. A move to the corner might help mask some of those deficiencies.

                        5th round - RHP Stephen Park - 19, 54/D
Pitches: 2SFB, SL, CH, SCV, SNK

Stephen having five pitches is somewhat unusual, especially as a projected reliever. This gives him many ways to attack hitters on either side of the plate, and the command is not terrible. The problem, though, is that Stephen might not have the ability or the edge to really push forward, especially on his own.

Still, he may be good enough to fill a bullpen role, especially if he can make some improvement in his strike out ability.

                        6th round - LHP Darrell Carlton - 19, 64/D
                        Pitches: 4SFB, 2SFB, SL

Darrell seems to be a well-developed pitcher on first look. He has an idea of how to attack hitters and mixes the movement and speed on his fastballs effectively. However, he tends to get inconsistent movement on all his pitches. His slider in particular seems to do little more than present a slower, easier-to-hit offering to the hitter. Sometimes, he can hang his pitches, bringing up concerns on how much his command can improve from here.

He also has issues keeping his composure on the mound. If anything starts going against him, a fluke hit, an error, a bad call at the plate, Darrel can become visibly flustered. This not only impacts his command and ability to make a plan of attack; it also shows the hitters when he's most vulnerable.

Overall, the Marlins had a pretty solid draft. The pitchers in the early rounds look to be strong prospects, just what the farm needed. Flores could be a future answer in the outfield, especially if moved to a corner. It's been a while since the Marlins could net a good draft, and this one has the makings of being one the team could point to as being a key part of the next generation of the team.

                            April Recap

Indians finish the month of April 17-15 to say that we had an interesting month would be an understatement. Our longest losing streak was four games the last game against the Orioles in there series and a three game set to the Jays. We did round out our last ten games going 7-3 so the hope we can keep it up is still alive. We finish a series against the Tigers on the road to start the month. Follow that up with a two game set against the Reds and a four game set against the Mariners both of them on the road.

Ughhh I made a terrible mistake and forgot to turn off GM contracts at the start of my Braves franchise. Really wanted to stick with it for multiple seasons for this one. No choice but to roll with it and hope I can make a postseason run and earn a new contract. I’m 2 weeks from the 2018 draft, will post an update after that.

                              Happy fathers’ day fellow dads!
