Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Another horrible outing by Huey Kiser and the Marlins ended up losing a bad one 9-5.

The game was more one-sided than the score suggests. The Marlins hit into three double plays - been a while since they did that, and had just two extra base hits.

Stan Brito was passed three times, perhaps that was part of the issue. The Braves were giving him nothing to hit. He went 0-for-1 with three walks. Bo Winter was forced to hit from the right side as well as the Braves put a lefty on the mound. Winter's power weakens significantly against southpaws.

But the real problem was Kiser. The Marlins have to wonder what is going on with him. Has the league adjusted to the second-year pitcher and he just needs to mix things up, or could it be a mechanics issue?

Marlins pitching coach Thurman Sisler seems to think it's a mechanics issue. He made an adjustment to Kiser's delivery and the young pitcher was optioned to AAA to refine it and become more familiar with how his stuff will now behave.

Taking Kiser's place will be another youngster, Shane Koehne. He features a slow curve, a change up that might be his best pitch, and changes speeds on his fastballs. His secondary pitches are his bread and butter, so he'll have to master the command on them.

Koehne's overall profile is pretty much a harder throwing Loren Rasmussen: pitch to contact, change speeds, try to get chases on pitches just out of the zone after establishing strikes with all pitches. Of course, Rasmussen is having his own share of struggles to start the year, so it will be interesting to see if he and Koehne fall into the same pitfalls.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

I'm officially done with this mode and possibly this game until changes are made.

I'm in 2021 currently. Have played 40+ games a season. I'm deeply invested in my franchise.

I wanted to see if prospects were progressing well 4+ more seasons down the road because I felt some were coming in with low OVR. So I saved and simmed for fun.

This was a huge issue in online franchise and I didnt expect it to be offline as well. But by 2024 there are numerous 90+ overall free agents that can't sign anywhere because nobody has money. The next year was even worse. Page 3 of the available free agents was filled with 85+ players. With guys like Machado, Rizzo and Turner all 93+ not being able to sign anywhere.

How does SDS test this game? Do they test franchise years down the road? If so this is blatantly in the open and shouldn't be overlooked. I know not many get seasons deep. But with Onlind being taken out I was very invested into getting MANY seasons in and potentially carrying over. There's no point if 6 years in no teams have money?

I'm devastated that I have wasted the time that I have.

I saw this in an earlier game (might have been 16) where I had legit ace-level pitchers retire because the only team that could afford to give them their $30 million was me, and I didn't want to do it (plus I didn't need SP).

The next offseason, they retired despite being under 30.

Luckily, I never saw that kind of thing again. If anything, the FA pool tends to be barren as heck in this franchise. Hardly anyone worth pursuing.

I thought maybe somewhere when they tweaked budgeting or such, this got avoided. Then, I read your post, and it brought back the memory.

But, I mean, this is the year where your offseason could be a mess if the WS ended too soon...luckily, that got fixed quickly.

That said, this franchise is in year 15. I'm very invested in this franchise and that kept me playing through that.

For the prospects, I go through once or twice a year and fix some up. They do come in with low OVR (though, see why it's low...especially for pitchers because their defensive ratings and HR/9 make a lot of that). I go through all the teams (including mine) and look for these really raw players that haven't developed, especially if they are over 21, and move a few of them up.

The Cardinals lost 2 out of 3 at Citi Field, we then took 2 out of 3 in Milwaukee. Started our first home stand of the year with a 6-5 win over the D-backs. Carlos Martinez missed his second start with a pre-game injury, Pham has missed three games with a hamstring injury. He should be getting close to returning.

I don't know why I'm so happy about this, but I had an epic 9th inning meltdown last night. I'm up by two in the top of the 9th with my closer warming up and I hit a 2 run pinch hit HR with Brandon Nimmo to make it 6-2, so I sit my closer and have AJ Ramos pitch the 9th. He could only record on out and gave up one run. I bring in Familia with two men on, he lets in a run, hits a batter and then serves up a walk off grand slam and I lose 8-6

The Rangers bounced back to split the series with the White Sox.

Got a really nice start from Volquez giving up 1 run through 6. The White Sox starter was better giving up no runs through seven but I got to their bullpen for 2 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to win 4 -1. Kela got 1 2 3 save after blowing the previous game.

So two teams near the bottom of team ERA in baseball (Sox 30th and Rangers 26th) have 3 straight pitching duels. The loss of Joey Gallo to the DL hasn't helped my offense either it seems. He was on fire before going down.

              Rangers 21-27 on the season

after a few day hiatus, I'm getting back into my franchise tonight.

                So looking forward to it.

We have a big 3 game set vs the first place Reds. A sweep and we are within 5 games. Get swept and we are 10 out.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                    Start of Season - 2022

We spent some money. Gave out 300 million to bring back and extend our guys. Salvador Perez, Jesse Hahn, Danny Duffy, Jorge Soler, Cheslor Cuthbert and Raul Mondesi all got new contracts.
                    • Salvy - Largest contract in team history. 4 year deal worth 117M and a 5th year player option worth 32.9M.
                    • Hahn - 2 year deal worth 18.6M and a mutual option for a 3rd year worth 9.3M.
                    • Duffy - 2 year deal worth 14M and a club option on a 3rd year for 7M.
                    • Soler - 4 year deal worth 42.7M and a 5th year mutual option worth 12M.
                    • Cuthbert - 1 year deal worth 4M and a player option for a 2nd year worth 4M.
                    • Mondesi - 4 year deal worth 44M. Buys out his last 2 years of arbitration and his first 2 years of free agency.

We made one pickup in free agency. Zack Greinke was still available at the start of Spring Training so we picked him up to finish off his career where it started. Gave him a 1 year deal worth 5M. Wasn't great last year. put up a 4.74 ERA. Hoping he can bounce back a bit.

Robinson Cano and Max Scherzer were the only big names to retire. Cano made the hall of fame.

Accidently skipped ST again (it should really ask if you are sure you want to skip) so didnt get a chance to see any competitions. 90% of the roster was set anyway.

I think we are good enough to make the playoffs. BP is much better than it was at the start of last year. I think the Duffy we saw over his last 25 starts is a lot closer to the real Duffy. Only concern is the offense taking a step back. Lot of guys had career years last year. We can make it with them being the same. If they get worse at all we might be screwed.

Things could go bad quick if we struggle. 57 games in April/May. 40 of them against teams that were .500 or above last season. It won't take long to see what got. I believe in the team though. Until they blow 3 straight games then ill want them all dead.

Crazy thing is that I may take him back...

Snapped our 5 game losing streak and beat the Reds in game 1 of the series to move within 6 1/2 games of the lead. Carlos Martinez was dominant going 8 innings of shutout baseball. Gave up a solo shot in the 9th to Alex Blandino that chased him from the game after 98 pitches.

First game with new hitting coach was a success as we put up 7 runs on 9 hits. Had better quality at bats and made more solid contact. Obviously we'll see how this goes.

                        Next up Game 2.

Do most of you guess do trades like teams would in real life or do you try to offer the CPU a deal they will accept even tho you know they wouldn't in real life?

My franchise is my own world. And with carryover I'm deep into it where teams have formed their own identities separate of their real life counterparts. Same with players.

I will make whatever trades I feel will help my team win now and/or build for the future.

If I need a RF and a power bat and the Yankees are willing to trade me Aaron Judge for a stick of gum, I'm asking which flavor of gum would they prefer.

We took game 2 vs the Reds 8-3. We pounded out 10 hits which included 6 homeruns and 2 doubles in route to the 8-3 victory. The ball was flying around Great American Ballpark as we combined to hit 8 homeruns on the day.

Lance Lynn wasn't overly effective but did enough to record his 5th win of the year. Stephen Piscotty extended his hitting streak to 20 games.

The win moves us to 5 1/2 games behind the Reds for the divisional lead. Next up is the series finale as we put Alex Reyes on the mound.

I had another 9th inning meltdown last night and blew a 2-1 lead to lose 4-2. That's four losses in a row and every game I've either blown a 9th inning lead or lost in extra innings. four of my five starters have sub 3 ERAs but four of my relievers have an ERA over 10, including my closer and setup man so I need to get the bullpen sorted out in a hurry. I'm only 13 games in to the season and already 4.5 behind Washington
