I haven't posted in this thread since I've already bought the game this year (two copies, even), but unfortunately I've moved myself to "by default, no buy" category for the next year's game unless the new version provides some hope that the authenticity as a baseball simulation game returns as the main driver (or at least one of them) for the evolution of the series.

I've been pretty disappointed in the direction of The Show for the last couple iterations, but those who care enough should still voice their opinions as to why the game has drifted away from their interest. The chances are that the voices won't be heard, but at the same time, there currently is only one (non-text-based) baseball video game that's really worth playing if you want a simulation baseball experience.
The reason I did that was to try and drill down and see if the vocal, disaffected segment of MLB The Show fans will ever put their money where their mouth is. Every year people have these super long wish lists, and grumble grumble about this and that only for 95% of them to cave in and buy it no matter what's been removed, what hasn't been added. I'm a bit puzzled by this behavior and am trying to understand it better.

So one of the reasons I made this thread and pitched it to a targeted audience was to see if that audience actually exists...or if people not buying the game is just sort of a unicorn type of deal 'round these parts.

I bet if the scope were widened to ''Who wouldn't buy if you knew then what you know now'', buyers remorse would already have the thread at 200 posts instead of nearly a hundred. Also of interest (to me anyways) is how many are still going to get 18 at the first price drop. I can see where $65 could be considered over the line of value, but if you can pick it up used at half that, is a roster update worth say, $30-$35?

Okay, that makes sense and I suppose that mission is somehow accomplished given that some who did not buy the game actually have given their reasons here. And indeed those are valuable (if I were selling the game which I am not) feedback.

I didn't mean to indicate what are you doing does not make sense... just that you might be going after a fairly small group of people, those who did not buy the game yet still care enough to come to the forum to check out how things are going, just as you said. And sadly the situation is kinda creating a negative feedback loop, while the other active The Show forums are flooded with non-baseball talks complaining about online and DD.

I miss days when people actually talked about baseball in relation to The Show.

I love sports games but the only one I've bought consistently is Madden, partly do to football being my favorite spectator sport and partly do to the quality of past NBA, MLB, and soccer games.

I buy Madden every year because I have hope. I buy the show, 2k every 2-3 years because it's well made and I don't follow the sports nearly as much as I follow NFL. Therefore I don't need perfect rosters. Also those games allow the community to create amazing rosters / draft classes to keep an old game fresh.

Re: For Those Who Are Not Buying MLB The Show 18, Why Not?

Have bought every iteration of the Show until now. May pick it up discounted at some point but why did I not pull the trigger on day 1 as I have in the past? These are all personal items and do not apply to most folks, but my own reasons on why I have skipped it so far.

            1) as a classic roster creator and junkie, they refuse to put in a roster/team export and import function that would allow easy import of roster sets into the next year's game. I got tired of recreating the same classic rosters year after year, and I know other classic and regular season roster guys do too.

            2) No season mode...it's what I play regularly

            3) lack of classic stadiums being added

            4) not enough testing of cpu vs human before release - most time is spent in human vs human/online testing and gameplay fixes

            5) for some reason the announcing really bugs me. Stale now. I hate the color guys and would prefer to be able to shut them off like we used to be able to do

            6) too much emphasis on cards, buying, etc...I know I don't have to use it but it hits me in the face every time I fire up the game

            7) I feel the game is close to "jumping the shark"...can't put my finger on it, but get the sense that the team is moving away from the hard core baseball sim players

If I had a group of 5-6 guys to play online franchise with I wouldn't have purchased it myself. A few guys I know really oppose this feature not being included. It smacks of ea sports

I finally got a PS4 for Christmas last year. Purchased '17 for $15 during the holidays. Hearing that season mode is gone guarantees I will never buy '18.

I can tell you that I broke down and bought it after watching Armors stream. A part of what held me off from buying was the fact that I wasn't sure that the on the field changes they made were enough to warrant a purchase. After watching the stream, I realized that despite the stuff that I was mad about (and still am) the efforts for on the field play were worth it (for me at least).

I can tell you that I haven't regretted buying it. If I have at all it's more because I feel like an irresponsible consumer then buyers remorse. Although I feel caught in a catch22 in that regard. If I don't buy it: "Hey, our data shows that less people are playing franchise. Keep focusing on DD!" If I do buy it: "Hey, we had great sales on this version of the show. Keep focusing on DD!"

In my perfect world, DD wouldn't even be in 19. But The Show would also be multiplatform, so I'm obviously fantasizing over here.

17 was such a big jump from 15 and 16. I really got back on the Show bandwagon with 17 since the PS2 days.

18 I really liked at first, but now I'm heavily disappointed in DD. It's like all the fun things that were in 17's DD , like Team Epics, and My Career, is not in 18. I've heard they may put these back in later but why later? Why didnt it come on day 1 like last years game?

Feel like it's an incomplete product at least from the DD perspective. I was new to DD last year and only played offline. That team epic mode had me enjoying this game for 2 months before I completed all those missions. That was one of the most fun i had in a videogame in a long time. But now it's gone. Just sucks.

How much different is it from 17? I never played 17.

Agreed. I felt the same way when quick counts was added. The count is a key part of baseball strategy, but I had to be fair and acknowledge that some people don't have much time to play. However, three innings for a game of baseball is just laughable, and indeed tells as much about the future of the game.

                          Man, that is disheartening.

Maybe it's been in the show for a while, but I remember the first time I ever noticed it being an option to shorten the number of innings played in a season/franchise (think it was either MVP or a really old version of 2K baseball) and even then I was wondering why anyone would do that. You don't get bullpen management, and technically with a 3 inning game your starter doesn't even go long to qualify for the decision in a real game.

Lots of good responses in this thread, and it's good to see people speaking to SDS with their wallet. We're the minority though, and if they feel strongly enough to advertise 3 inning games as a compelling feature in marketing campaigns then it doesn't give me much hope that '19 will be any better.

17 felt really special to me. Like one of those games that you'll remember 10 years down the line. It just had everything right for me. The ball physics I thought were such a huge leap. Even DD which I tried for the first time let you earn stubbs in offline modes. And of course, season mode was there.

I enjoy 18, don't get me wrong, but there are so many 'wth' moments in it that I just dont understand. DD is a money grab and a total grind. If you have a job and family to raise I dont know how you would be able to play DD this year. It's just not as fun right now as 17 was.

17 was the first baseball game I kept all year since High Heat way back 13/14 years ago.

Re: For Those Who Are Not Buying MLB The Show 18, Why Not?

                                1. RTTS changes. I want more control over the league and my player. Not less. If I want to craft how my career unfolds, let me. I even wish we had full roster editing ability. Being able to edit ratings and especially uniform edits with some of these whack rookies coming into the league over time (they did get a lot better with that though). Some would take advantage of it and rig it to their advantage but I only want it to make it a more realistic experience and so some of these guys that suck when you start, but end up playing a lot and doing well in real life aren’t just stuck in the minors with a 65 overall (Aaron Judge last year for example). So making it so we can’t even control where our attributes improve/ratings caps is a turn off.

                                2. Burned out with DD. Not even a knock on the game. I just got way too into it last year and took and lot of my time. I still have plenty to do with 17 as well as continuing RTTS the way I want. It’s nice being away from missions and grinding. All of that is choice but it becomes addicting and time consuming.

                                3. Just not enough difference to warrant an early purchase. The major improvements and additions are all DD based so if I’m looking to take a break from DD, no point in getting 18.

                                4. The continued server issues, poor customer support. Leaving customers in the dark. The constant money grabs. It’s annoying and just poor customer service. I don’t want to give my money to someone who runs a company that way. Now I love baseball and this game is as good as it gets for any sports game in my opinion but the negligence they’ve shown me the last couple of years has made me more than willing to wait a year or two between buying the new releases.

I don’t plan on buying 18 at all but I will consider it again when the price drops.
