excatly my point the fact that we dont have a choice is always a mistake in these sports games that is not excepted in any other industry

I bought it this year but every time I sit down and play my RTTS I'm reminded why I regret doing so. The hitting feels completely broken and random like it was last year. Don't get me wrong, they definitely fixed some of the glaring issues from last year (i.e. Just Late swings having better outcomes than Good-timing swings), but to me this is just a small fix to an otherwise massive problem. Can't tell you the number of times I'll swing and connect on something with good timing on a pitch left right down the middle and it ends in a lazy fly ball or a weak groundout to second/shortstop. Seriously, sometimes it feels like you couldn't get a hit if the pitcher was tossing it underhand. I've played The Show since 2012 and I've never had a problem with the hitting until the massive changes they started making last year. Unless I see a huge overhaul to the hitting engine next year I probably won't be buying it.
Edit: If you want proof the hitting is broken and this isn't just me here are my RTTS stats: 9.4% walk rate, 13.7% strikeout rate, and .223 BA. So either I'm the unluckiest hitter in MLB history or the hitting engine is garbage.

        Here is my story:

My main mode I played was online franchise and was bummed that it was taken but I accepted it was gone and restrategized what I was going to do in 18. I waited to pre-order until I watched the Franchise stream. After not hearing about any major shifts I decided to pre-order figuring I would end up in season mode anyway (my second mode of choice).

I always enjoyed reading about people creating classic rosters for specific time periods and running them in season mode. Figuring there was no online I would invest time in season mode and create some rosters. I spent a chunk of time creating them and was anxious to get them to 18. The rest is history as we surprisingly found out Friday morning there is no season mode to be had. The time wasted makes me boil and the selective transparency on SDS's part is beyond comprehension.

I have not even opened 18 since it was downloaded. I could not even tell you what the opening intro is. Not 1 inning of 18 played so far and I am not sure if I will play it at all.
I am in the same boat as you. Here we are on April 15th and I havent played a single game yet. I preordered the game too, as I only played Season Mode in past years since 2006. Not into online play or RTTS or diamond dynasty stuff. I have seen a few threads about how to make Franchise mode as similar to season mode as possible, but the main bummer is there is no way to shorten the season length. I dont like to simulate any games, but I guess I will have to if I start a franchise. I will probably start one eventually, but Im into the NBA playoffs now, so this game can wait. I normally would have played a season by now with the 29 or 50 game season options from the past.

My reason for not getting it is pretty simple: far cry 5. Aside from that, I'm still very much satisfied with playing 17 and I've gotten pretty heavily invested in my franchise. That said, I fully plan on picking up 18 later on because I'm a creature of habit and have been playing the show since 07. Just not ready for it yet.

Still holding strong, haven't bought it yet.

I rented it for an evening, and I'm glad I did. Franchise mode is... fine, I guess. It's sad how little they did to it, and how hard it must've been on that stream to act like the menus were some sort of revelation. I hate how it's harder now to find stuff like team stats. It's just like... why?

I played a few games of DD, and wow. They stripped out any of the enjoyment from Programs and made it into a grind fest. Or, I should say, more of a grind fest. Every single program has an exchange "missions" where you have to trade in some crazy number of pitchers or catchers or whatever, and then there's 1-3 more where you have to exchange bobbleheads or jerseys or caps (that you can't even use in the game). So now there's only ONE mission you can do in-game that doesn't require a specific, rare, or hard-to-get player.

Like, yeah, we get it, you want people to buy stubs. But this is far beyond any semblance of reasonable. It sucks, and I'm guessing it'll only get worse from here.

I'll stick with 2017 until I can find a copy for $20-30. It's too bad, because the hitting feels pretty decent! The pitcher/batter matchup is still great.

BTW: outfield defense seems to have become worse? I had a number of incidents where my defender wouldn't address the ball as I was running to the spot? Or the AI wouldn't react to a ball hit off a wall? Overall, I was pretty damn disappointed with the game, outside of the batting (and to a lesser degree, pitching).

me too....will be holding out for the time being. not sure who has the time for a 162 game season and why they took out season mode is beyond me. so 17 will suffice for me. not only that, it's amazing how they haven't implemented a myleague option, expansion, rebranding or any customization options (but limited for DD). i mean, i really like DD but to not be able to play a season (or season mode) with my team against the MLB teams is frustrating. i created my DD team (montreal expos) with all free agents and would love to play a season with this team to see how it would fare. or maybe be able to rebrand the nationals to the expos if we prefer. and maybe even add a las vegas team in expansion....

Re: For Those Who Are Not Buying MLB The Show 18, Why Not?

I have been a long time season mode guy. For the people who don't want to deal with 162 game seasons I feel your pain but would like to make the following points. I had actually come to the realization that I wanted to play the full schedule even in season mode:

                  1) With the shorter seasons, even 81 games, all of your division games were packed into the beginning of the schedule which really kills the drama for pennant races.

                  2) With the shorter schedules the time of day of games was not the same as the real world, i.e. no 1:00 pm games during the week. With the recent emphasis on lighting and weather effects this was a negative for me.

                  3) Playing 3 or 4 game series against the same team has a rhythm to it that just feels like baseball. And you get to see more of the other ballparks.

                  4) I have started a franchise and as a long time season mode player it's really quite tolerable. I've got things configured so that there is almost no difference to my user experience (again this is with the caveat that I want to play 162 games anyhow). For example I have everything but managing games set to auto but I can make manual roster moves if I want to.

                  5) Not paying attention to the 'GM stuff' doesn't really do me any harm as I have no intention of taking the franchise past the first season.

                  6) If you have a Pro and 4K television I think that the graphical improvement is pretty significant.

I still don't like the decision to remove season mode, but thought I'd share...

I'm not into all the franchise stuff (contracts, etc.) I play one season within franchise mode. I do use 30 team control as I like to keep the rosters fairly accurate (putting guys with significant DL time down in A ball). The contracts and stuff.....no thanks. This IS a reasonable work around, and you're right about the PRO and 4K, plus all the added presentation stuff.

If it's all about the length of the season I'm not sure the reasoning of why you just can't, for example, play one, or two games out of a series and sim the rest. IMO this years rendition would be worth that sacrifice.

                    Just a thought.

Because some people don't like to sim any games.

You can come up with a "workaround" for a lot of Sony's design decisions (the fact that 30-team control is a "must" is a topic for another day), but sometimes people just don't want to have to outsmart the game to be able to play it the way they want.

And then you have to factor in having to remember all the workarounds AND restart after the workarounds are invented.

....when frankly just not taking Season Mode out in the first place would be the most preferable "workaround." lol

I skipped 17 and was holding out, but I'm glad that I did go ahead and purchase the game. There are enough improvements from 16 in graphics and on the field to warrent it, and I honestly do like the new menus myself. For how I play, and how I run my franchise, its worked very well.

The are improvements in how the game plays also. I have been taking MANY more walks than ever before, and after some minor tuning, and playing on Veteran Plus for hitting and All Star Plus for pitching, and getting really realistic results. I've actually only gone 8-8 in my last 16 games, so its a fun level of challenge.

There are still some legacy issues with gameplay, and as many others have said, base stealing is very broken (the CPU catchers are far too overpowered), but overall I'm happy.

I'm a play all 162 guy, and I'm in late May of season one, and its been good. I'm interested to see if the draft runs smoothly in 8 game days. The true test will come when I get to the offseason, which is as important as gameplay to me, but I'll get there when I get there.
Anyone who claims to be a fan of two teams in the same pro sport is actually a fan of none.

I like it but there are some things that could go. Retro Mode. Like really what is the point. This is a sim not an arcade. I really wish they would take that memory it takes and upgrade the stats. I would love to see true stats like what a hitter is hitting in certain parks or in certain counts. Stuff like that. But like some of you say its all about online to them. I like DD but im a franchise guy and I really wish they would bring back the pricing options and make franchise deeper. Their classic stadiums are a joke. Why not the Astrodome? Would be a cool touch. One of baseball biggest deals is double headers. How the hell is that not in the game yet. They say they listen to the fans but i think they dont. Everything we ask for they dont do. But I do enjoy the game. OSFM rosters is what makes it fun

Or the AI wouldn't react to a ball hit off a wall? Overall, I was pretty damn disappointed with the game, outside of the batting (and to a lesser degree, pitching).
Makes me feel better about sticking with 17
