I am loving this year's The Show.  I spent a couple hours last night using The Babe to launch home runs in HR Derby in many of the classic ball parks.  It was a blast.  The RTTS mode is excellent, as usual.  That said, I have to agree with the criticism about the ball contact.  This year it is difficult to get a sense of how hard you hit a ball, and the ball does appear to just float over the wall.  Last year, you knew it when you got a hold of one.  I hope they can patch that.  At the very least, they need to patch the weak contact sound.  It's the same weak sound they tried to use last year, before fixing it.

I don't get you people. I have 17 and my buddy has 18. I wasn't going to buy this game till I played It on his system. What is wrong with you people. It's the same exact game as 17 just alittle fine tuned nothing that big not even that fine tuned. Why are you guys all fan boys putting your hard earn money on the same exact game. Plus they took out season mode. I just don't get it. Yes k have played it before you bash me. It's the same same game. You guys got duped.

I liked the review, but would have really highlighted the (imo) massive overhaul to the core of RttS. I know the archetype thing is me mentioned, but the point system, which was at its core key to getting the player to progress, is now gone and replaced by the minimal gains with plus/minus.

I carried over a pitcher from 17, and he's a 68. I've pitched with a lot of success and wins, and have gone up to a 69. It's really quite annoying that since I picked the 'hard throwing heat' archetype has limited me as I'm over the cap in certain areas that they've restricted. Like control, BB/K.... as well as control of secondary pitches.

Yes there is a lot of common code being used in 18 that was in 17. But for those of us who own the game, we can see where it is different. Is it radically different? No it's not radically different ... but it has taken a step forward in the evolution of the game.

Step forward what but adding a few more cut scenes. I mean come on now. I used to be a show guy but get disappointed every year. It's the same stale game. Pitching is to easy. I can pin point ever pitch even in legend and with sliders on 0 accuracy. They need to change the pitching and hitting mechanics to make it harder to hit your spots. Maybe not the hitting so much but the pitching isn't very good

This was a very good and honest take on MLBTS. Many refuse to ever say anything against this game, and those that do, typically get bashed for it. You pointed out the very reasons, why I havent bought MLBTS18, and I likely wont buy it either, since I decided to go with OOTP Baseball this yr. Although I had considered buying it , once the price drops way down
. I havent heard how sales for MLBTS this yr have been, but I know I wasnt the only one to say to hell with MLBTS18, this yr and went the OOTP route. So hopefully there was enough of us, who refused to buy it this yr, that they feel it in the loss of money. Then maybe it will get them, to put more effort and focus back on Franchise mode, instead of gimic fantasy mode DD. I never thought SCEA would go the Madden route, and cater to casual fans of the sport, over hardcore fans, but thats what they have done.
Im glad you pointed out, the lack of focus on Franchise mode, and how the The Show has grown stale to alot of hardcore baseball fans, who use to love this game. Also I like how you pointed out, how they seem to now be catering to the casual fans, with so much focus by them with their gimic mode DD.
Dont get me wrong, I know MLBTS always puts out a solid game, as far as gameplay goes, and Im sure as far as gameplay goes, with that feel you get with the pitcher vs hitter duel. As far as that goes, I believe its the best and most realistic feel to that of any sports, game, where when you succeed in winning that duel as either the pitcher or the hitter, to win a game, or save it. You dont get that same feeling, during crunch time with NBA2k, or when you drive down the field to throw a winning TD in Madden. They truly do bring that part of the game to life, in MLBTS, each and every yr, so I have no doubt, in that regard MLB18 is the best to date.
I do hope, there is enough of us, who decided not to buy the Show this yr, is felt by SCEA financially, to where 19, we will see a the focus revert back to Franchise mode,  where they start applying many of these things, we have been calling for, for yrs now. For example, a more realistic spring training, better simulated stats, and a deeper MILB, and it dont have to be where every level is playable like AAA and AA is, just make more slots, so you can get all, or atleast close to all players in a organization. I really hope come next yr, I have a reason to go back to buying MLBTS again.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Review: Gameplay is the Guiding Light

Here in MN, longtime Game Informer veteran (and baseball junkie) Andrew Reiner is on VGW each week, a video game show on the local sports station. I’ve always found his reviews in Game Informer to be even-handed and fair. He’s reviewed The Show for as long as I can remember.

Be warned: He is not kind to this year’s release. And after listening to the show live last night, his written review score makes a lot of sense. Link to the episode:
