Dropped third strikes.
Do batters ever just walk back to the dugout and/or just allow themselves to be tagged out? I think I know the answer to this because in all my years playing The Show I've never seen it happen. Every single time there's a ball in the dirt or a dropped third strike, the batter sprints to first like he's playing JV baseball trying to get that Varsity call-up. In the Majors I'd say that well over half the time batters (especially sluggers) just stand there or just walk back to the dugout. For all the, "little things," The Show gets right, it misses the boat on this one.Tags: None -

Re: Dropped third strikes.
players since around the mid 90's have become lazy "I have my millions, why play hard" attitude. You wouldn't catch Pete Rose pulling that.Comment

Re: Dropped third strikes.
Could you see the backlash SDS would get if it was a key moment in the game and their player just stood there and let themselves get tagged out instead of attempting to run to first, forcing the CPU to make a play?
People would be claiming the game cheated and decided they were going to lose

I just wonder how much AI is really possible? We sure want artificial intelligence to be, well, real, and not artificial. I think there's a limit. It's a video game.Comment

Dropped third strikes.
I always hate the, "it's a video game," excuse. SCEA strives for realism. They added lazy jogs to first for routine ground outs by some players. They have players throwing their helmet or bat after striking out. They have managers barking at umpires and ejections. No reason not to have most players just stand there and get tagged out after a strikeout in the dirt. It's what happens most of the time in real life.
It's not a huge deal, just figured I'd throw it out there.

Re: Dropped third strikes.
It's not an excuse. The intelligence is artificial, and none of us knows exactly how difficult or easy programming something specific is. If we'd stop demanding "everything" be put in this game perhaps the game might not be released so buggy. Just a thought of what we wish for.
Okay, man.

Re: Dropped third strikes.
There was a time when hitters seldom swung at pitches in the dirt. Someone complained about not enough chased pitches and that was the genesis of the strikeout on a pitch in the dirt which is the most frequently occurring animation in the game now especially in manage mode.≡Comment

Re: Dropped third strikes.
It always has happened way too often for me pitching or batting. Just script it so if the batter meets a speed attribute threshold, he runs. If not, he takes the tag. Or add a hustle attribute to players to decide if they bust down the line on these types of plays.
The dropped third strike is never that far away from the catcher anyway and I feel like I cheated if I somehow make it to first on these plays. It would be a welcomed little change for sure that adds to the realism. Similar to a batter jogging when he hits an easy grounder and knows he won't beat out the throw.Comment

Exactly. For as complicated as I'm sure some of the coding is for this game, it cannot be all that difficult to have a percentage of run vs. allow tag for batters. Could be linked to their power and or base running ability. Either way, not a huge ordeal, but just something that would add to immersion and believability.

Re: Dropped third strikes.
Now that catcher responsiveness is improved on balls in the dirt, this could be the next subtle avenue to take.
Some guys have swings are very big and if they swing late enough, they are still going through their wind down while the catcher has collected the ball that bounced into his mitt. That would be a chance to just slap tag. If not, then just toss it to first.
Basically leave the batters as is and how fast they get out of the box can depend on what it already does (swing timing, swing itself, batter speed seems to have some impact as I have tagged batters out without making a throw to first). More adding on more "maybe if he's quick enough" response for catchers on these plays, which could branch off the "pitch in the dirt" AI that's already been improved."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Dropped third strikes.
This was discussed at community event one year. I thought they added some logic to jog down line instead of sprint.
I would also like to see walk to dugout on blocked pitches in front of plate. Or easy tags.

Re: Dropped third strikes.
Simple solution; press a button to run to first on a dropped third strike. Do nothing and your player stands there or gives himself up. Put a toggle in the settings for people who don’t want the option.Comment
