Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
I scrolled through the threads and I’m kinda surprised this hasn’t been brought up (I didn’t see if it was) but does anybody other than myself get picked off like once a game? Pitcher will throw over and my runner will just stand there like a deer in headlights before going back to the bag and getting picked. Any suggestions?

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
I hear you. What I did was move the CPU pickoff frequency slider to 0. I'm assuming you may have tried that. So I don't get picked off as often. Other than that, never take more than a 1-step lead if they have someone holding the runner on, 2 steps if they're not. I think the steal ability slider also plays a factor into whether or not he gets back in time, but I'm not sure.
Bout all I can tell you, bud. Been this way for years.Would the lady who left her nine kids at Wrigley Field please pick them up immediately? They are beating the Cubs 4-0 in the 7th inning! -

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
Yeah the computer has some weird cheat to pick you off bizarrely frequently. Play against another human and with a one(extra) step lead you can probably throw over 50 times and they'll dive back in safe almost every time, but the computer will nail you about 1/3 it seems. It was like that last year and it's pretty frustrating, but there's not a whole lot you can do about it.Comment

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
Yeah this is all unfortunately true a fundamental that has plagued the game for a long time. Holding the left stick is the answer unfortunately!
Also if you hold L1 it will go into that horrible standing on one knee pose animation. It's similar to holding the left analog stick but you can test your reflexes a bit and make it slightly more challenging!
It's been to many years with the series for me! The game is fun and has some high points.
I am not a developer but I just feel some of the core baseball fundamentals of the game got neglected as the series continued on. Now at this point in the series I am just realizing it is what it is!Proud member of the 0.04%Comment

I almost never take an extra step when stealing 2nd. I still get plenty of steals.Comment

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
I always had 1 step to my lead from the default and rarely get thrown out at 2nd and almost never get picked off 1st. It's when I try to get a 2 step lead that I risk getting picked off. Also, I put the pickoffs slider all the way to 0 because it's ridiculous when the pitcher throws over like 8 times in a row.Atlanta Braves

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
This is a really unrealistic part of the game. If a guy is a good base stealer, he is good at reading pickoff moves. So generally, if a guy doesn't get picked off the first time, he won't be picked off period because he's seen it and knows how much room he has.
However in this game, it (seems like it) is a roll of the dice each time if you have an extra step. The CPU just does it 8 times and there's a decent chance one will work. They can throw over 7 times and the runner gets back but then all of a sudden, the 8th time he completely misses it and gets picked? Never going to happen. But this is a limitation.
The best chance should occur on the first throw and the dive in should be varied more than out/safe (literally, there are two options).
But this is what happens when there is no pickoff rating (which there should be). It should make the move quicker and more effective."The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws."

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
no rating and other than a perk for a few of them, no way to know who’s good or bad.
There’s a suggestion i made few years ago is with L1 button to take smaller increase steps. If you look at speedy guys IRL, they slowly increase their lead, 2-3-4, sometimes 5 little steps. Not a “oh by god i pushed my luck” giant one.
That way it would be a more fun cat & mouse game for us.Last edited by TripleCrown; 04-18-2018, 11:06 PM.Comment

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
There def is something wonky in the AI pickoff logic. I've tested this a bit. It does seem they have a "heightened awareness" of when you are about to steal.
I've tested it by going through half a game without attempting a steal and then having a rather slow runner on first and selecting to steal. Sure enough, the pitcher will throw over more times than not. Not all the time, but enough to think, "hmmm...why did that just happen?" And this is without an extended secondary lead.
Something is amiss...they should look at this and tweak the logic a bit.

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
Or do you mean that if pickoff rating + arm + runner lead = "I got you" then the game just renders a fast pick off move and slow reacting runner to emulate the pickoff?
Meaning that the pitcher doesn't necessarily have an elite move but it's just how the graphics engine renders the play?"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Getting picked off CONSTANTLY
Is the things still in the game where you take too far of a league and the game freezes you into a slow mo so that you can't dive back in time even if you huttjng the buttons for 5 seconds priorComment
