Sliding vs. diving to catch a ball

Last night on a fairly routine pop fly, I pressed R2 to perform a sliding catch with my OF (as the ball was just a little outside of his happy zone).

But nope! Blackmon went full superman, missed the catch and got hit in the head by the ball (he's out 1-2 weeks). What is it that determines the type of slide/dive that a fielder will perform to catch a ball? After several hundred games, there doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason to it other than a small percentage of variance depending on the fielding skill level.

I'm afraid we all have the same issue. There's no way (or at least I didn't find it) to decide what kind of catch do you want to play.

I want to say it's a sensitive way of tapping the button in which you use to make your players dive. Because you can rearrange the buttons. I play using the Braves. Heyward & Inciarte make some diving gems controlled by me the user. Also love how you can get injured by using the dive button. Try tapping lightly, plus point in the direction of the ball.

Want to make sure I understand what you are saying here as I posted about this very subject in the RTTS forum. So you are saying that if you lightly tap the dive button that you are more likely to get the sliding animation? I have dozens of diving catches (head first).....but I've not been able to trigger a sliding catch one single time.
