    Picking off base runners?

    Hey everybody,

I have made a conscious effort to keep an eye on base runners and R2 + O to attempt to pick off at 1st base. Doing this has definitely helped limit steals against me in my franchise, but I am pretty certain I have yet to pick off a single runner. Even when I have them diving to get back, not one pick or runner caught in no-mans land.

Anything I can do to increase that number (from zero!), or is it really that pitcher-dependent? Thanks!

Weird. I haven't picked off a runner either (that i can think of). Then i read this post. I then started a game. First batter of the game hits a single. After 1 out, i attempted two pickoff moves (not in a row). On the second throw over he was frozen for an easy out.

FWIW - The Pitcher was Cole Hamels, who has the "Pick Off Artist" quirk. But it his first of the year. I used L2 - Circle.

I've picked some off using L2 - just a matter of RNG and if they are taking the large lead.

Also caught some going because they were fooled by the move - so they run and get easily cut down at second.

It's not common, but mixing moves and your pitcher's move and the pickoff rating (even without the quirk)

I picked off two runners in MLB 17, nine this year. I have said for a long time that pickoff move needs to be an attribute for pitchers.

It’s not listed but there are different ability levels assigned to pitchers. All the pitchers in the game are not equal in this ability across the board.

Really? I find this surprising. When and where has this ever been mentioned by a developer or Russell? Not doubting it might have been said before, just surprised they'd have a rating that's under the hood and never seen.

Wow, that was from 2010. There's a possibility that it's not even there anymore.

I've never seen a post saying it was taken out and did not see one in my search.

If you find a post, feel free to post it. I could have missed it.

I probably picked off like 2, 3 runners this year tops.

From little things the devs have mentioned and hinted at at different times, players do have some hidden ratings that are never seen.
