In the game I'm currently playing Patrick Johnson is the home plate umpire. He gives the low zone. I would say that 8 out of 10 pitches at the bottom of the zone, either on the line or just out of it, are called strikes.

James Kingsley who umped the previous game, likes to give pitchers a few inches inside on hitters, especially lefties.

    What would "realistic" entail?
As with most of the game the devs do not embellish beyond the explanation in the game but it is supposed to be the strike zone as called IRL. You can plug the game into your ps4 and read the explanation.

I haven't done a study but my experience in manage mode is the "realistic" strike zone generates a little more offense than "perfect". I've never used variable because it seems too arcade.

I thought you were suggesting they should only have 3 types of umpires with one of them being "realistic".

I've only used personalized in my games and enjoy the different strike zones amongst the various umpires.

Had this discussion before but i think they should call the game 100% correct when it comes to there zone tendencies. If they don't umpire to there tendencies 100% then what makes them any different from the umpire who has no consistency or the one that you never know what he is going to call from game to game.
^This. I like the concept of having umpires with different traits/personalities, but it isn't implemented correctly and doesn't feel like it does in real baseball. For one, the game itself does not call a realistic strike zone, IMO, and calls a more 'rulebook' strikezone instead of what you actually seen in a real game. In the game, they just miss too many corner strikes and call way too many no-doubt strikes balls. People will say, "See! It's working properly!". No. Just having random bad calls isn't the same as having missed "close calls" and only a few missed obvious ones.

Again, good concept - poor implementation.

Quite the opposite. Part of being a MLB baseball player and a hitter for that matter is not only knowing the pitcher you are facing, but who is behind the dish. Certain umps favor certain area's of the strike zone.

Some umps in the game are more hitters umps (not giving corners or upper or lower part of the zone), some pitcher umps (calling a wide zone east west or north or south) and some are pretty straight up.

Knowing each ump is pure simulation.....just like in real life. It adds a lot of personality to the game. I love it. And like always SDS gives us the option for perfect, realistic or variable umpiring.

Give me variable all day. Yes sometimes it costs me AB's....but sometimes it does not and forces pitchers to groove one into my happy zone! LOL.

In his decade plus of incompetence that wouldn’t surprise me. People look at me crazy when I groan when I see him behind the plate.
