Last night I had one of the most exciting moments I’ve ever had in a game, and that’s saying a lot. It made me jump up out of my seat in anticipation, get close to the screen cheer, and eventually fall back on the couch with my hands on my head saying, “noooo.”
It was the bottom of the tenth inning against the Tigers at Wrigley Field, me as the Cubs, as always. Brandon Morrow had just blown a save and the Tigers had tied the game at four in the top of the ninth. Addison Russell singled to lead off the bottom of the tenth but after two consecutive outs it looked like the game was going to the 11th. But Kris Bryant squared a ball up, shooting a hard line drive into the left-center field gap to the ivy covered wall. I immediately set Russell for home upon contact and that’s when I was jumping up and down like I was nine years old again, saying, “go, go!”
The throw hit the cutoff man, who related home as the winning run was on the way to the plate. I could tell the throw was off line and I slid away (headfirst I to foul territory a little), as I started to cheer the catcher caught the ball, swiped a tag in desperation and by just inches tagged Russell on the shoulder just in time for the final out of the inning.
It was an incredible moment. And then I lost in 11 innings.
What are some of your moments like this? I love how organic the game feels (most of the time).
