    Average against the shift.

I use Armor's sliders and direcitonal hitting on Hall of Fame and I have to say it's almost to the point where I feel like I'm cheating the computer when they shift against me. I don't have the numbers, obviously, but I bet I'm hitting around .400 when facing the shift. Teams almost always shift on me against Bryant, Rizzo and Schwarber. And every time I do I look to go the other way with the ball.

It's definitely to the point where, if this were real life, I think teams would stop shifting against these players. I run 30-team control so I'm sure there's a way to make my opponents stop it. However, there's few hits I love more than a double (or often a triple) down the line against the shift. So on one hand I feel like I'm almost cheating, and the other, I love it.

Again, ultimately, the point being if this were real life (which is what I try to simulate), teams would have stopped shifting against these players.

Have any of you guys altered the CPU's defense?

I've never went in and altered the CPU's defense, but I have had it change mid-game where in one at bat they shifted against Matt Carpenter and I hit a double to left field. Next at bat with no one on, they played straight up.

Man, really? Are you absolutely positive that there wasn't a runner on base? I'd be beyond surprised if the game is dynamic like that.

        Yes

I mentioned it before in the impressions thread. I'm trying to remember if I had a video of it, but I don't think I do.

Next time/if it happens again I'll be sure to save the replay from the two different at-bats and share.

That’s really awesome. And it makes me even more surprised that teams aren’t changing against my big three hitters. Rizzo is at or near the top of the league in doubles, thanks in large part to going against the shift. I’ll keep taking it as long as they keep giving it.

I’m 40 games away from the end of the season and my hitting has been on fire lately.

I've seen it stop happening too but I can't seem to figure out what is driving it. For instance, Jay Bruce and Michael Conforto were both getting shifted against and both are labeled as extreme pull hitters. I can't remember which one, but one of them stopped getting shifted on temporarily. I checked the spray charts and it was the guy that pulled the ball LESS, maybe the spray charts don't update as the season wears on. This was definitely with nobody on base too. There was also a brief period where Frazier and Cespedes started getting shifted against and then it randomly happened to Frazier a few games ago.

I poke balls to LF all the time against the shift and it doesn't feel cheap to me. The way I see it, I'm sacrificing a middle of the lineup guy's power and I'm not going to deliberately hit in to the shift just because the cpu won't adjust. Have you tried changing your hitters tendencies so that they're not pull hitters?

One of my young players used to get the shift but they stopped recently.

What bothers me though is teams never use the slight shift, only the extreme. If the cpu started using the slight shift, my players averages would all take a significant hit.

My average would drop if they would play the outfield straight up while shifting the infield

Yeah no doubt. I always have slightly unrealistic batting averages and it's entirely because of the CPUs "nothing but extreme shifting" policy.

Should I start switching sides every at bat and playing the shift for them? I've considered it before but it sounds tedious.

I don’t have any data to back this up, but I think it almost works itself out. For every hit I get because of the shift there has been an equal number of times I’ve absolutely drilled a ball right up the middle (especially with Bryant) for an out to the shortstop playing over the bag.

It's not the extreme shifts that would get me, it's the slight shifts. For example: Mike Trout hits a lot of hard grounders between the SS and 3B. He hits all over the field, but hitting right down the 1B line is incredibly rare. If the played him shifted slightly to the left, his average would drop 50 points.
