Is it time for SDS to kill the win?

Or at least devalue pitcher wins in award and all star selection logic. With deGrom nearly unanimously winning the CY Young with nearly a .500 pitcher record, the win is a thing of the past.

Folks thought the same thing the year King Felix won it with a 13-12 record but we saw it didn't change much in the way the mainstream media values a pitcher's W/L record. Listen to any generic baseball broadcast and one of the stats still mentioned to evaluate a pitcher is his W/L record. I just cringe because being a Braves fan, well they're TV broadcasters are by far the worst!!

True, Mets broadcast is pretty bad too about their love for pitcher wins (even though they’ve witnessed Jake’s ridiculous year). Broadcasts will still talk about it but I think the BBWAA have at least seen the light.

I agree. In theory they seem like they’d be good stats but in actuality they don’t determine a players value.

They did more so years back when a starter would go 6-8 innings on average but now its just not very useful at all. I think the only reason it really plays a role is more out of tradition and like some have mentioned before you everyday broadcasters still speak of it like its the gospel.

Right, I get why it used to be used years ago. However, now there are so many stats and with Statcast, literally everything on a baseball field can be measured (except catcher defense besides framing/throwing/blocking).

Batting average is another overrated stat. OBP has been proven to be so much more important than BA yet we still got folks that swear by BA.

I'm on the fence about batting average. If a guy's hitting .360
I cant say I wouldnt want him on my team just because it seems all his hits are singles with 2 outs & nobody on base lol

I hate FIP and I hate people who assert the value of 1 war win is like $8 Million.

Strikeouts matter for a hitter, So also get off my lawn.

Yeah I’m with you. BA is at least value in the context of slash lines.

Side note; can we finally get WRC+ and OPS+ in The Show.

I don't think anyone is saying that. What I'm saying is that a guy with a .275 average and a .370 OBP is more valuable than a guy with a .300 average and a .340 OBP. Why? Because the guy with the .370 OBP makes less outs and that's the name of the game. Making less outs and getting on base. You can't score runs if you can't get on base.

The Shows algorithm for choosing award winners is frustrating. They definitely value wins far too much. I have seen a 18 game winner with a 3.6ish ERA win the CY over a 14 game winner with a 2.3.

Its the same for the MVP award. They value certain stats far more then they should.
