It seems promising but definitely need to see more. In the two videos shown from what appears the CPU underplaying a fly ball. Even though the outfielders are different the animations were the same.

Which leads me to believe it will be the same type of movie clip gameplay as in previous years.

If the computer has the same margin of error as the player than I am all for it. I just see a chance of mucking this up. On NHL '19 once you get to the higher difficulties the computer doesn't react to your movements it reacts to your controller inputs which makes their play ungodly and a lot of times on offense glitchy and unreleastic. If there is going to be a "skill gap" will the ratings allow for the CPU to make the same mistakes as he user or will they read everything perfectly. That is the only point I am trying to make. I like ratings to matter. Yes I want user skill but I don't want to be jacking 30 home runs a year with Eric scosgard because my timing is perfect.

Someone used the madden qb as a comparison and I think it's perfect. Even with all of the improvements to madden 19 I could still take a 70-75 overall rated quarterback on all madden and complete 70% of my passes a season, because I know how to break down a cover 3 and my player never misses.

That’s my concern. I could end up with my pitcher hitting .500 if his hitting is purely determined by my own stick skills.

I say let's wait for the stream Thursday and I will make sure I ask the question about Directional/Timed hitting and this new "user skill matters more" question.

          I totally get the concern.

I am already in the camp of it will not affect that interface or will be barely noticeable.

You are at a huge disadvantage to begin with if you play with directional hitting online and expect to "compete" in that E-Sport world. I am quite certain the majority of competitive online players use zone and sit on pitches.

Directional is ratings driven heavily coupled with your timing on the button press. The PCI placement has zero human interference and is strictly based on the ratings as well as the size of the PCI based on counts and ratings and swing type.

That is why I am not getting all worked up about it.

          Let's just wait and see.

There is a big fat line that divides the two main camps when it comes to hitting.

On one side are those who believe user input should trump all
On the other are those who believe player ratings should trump all.

The line is too big and fat for SDS to straddle and please both sides. Some group will always be dissatisfied with hitting.

I to use directional plus timing and hope to god they didn't mess with it. I liked the variety I got last year

so confused, looked at the article, and the short videos inside it, cant tell what the difference is? "hitting power" like it all looks the same, i even had to bring my face closer to the monitor to see if im missing something.

I think the strength of this game has been the many interfaces they have to provide players with an interface that suits there play style.

IMO Zone hitting greatly enhances user skill. When you have the ability to sit on pitches and place the PCI where you want you are at a unique advantage in exploiting pitchers who do not mix their pitches up effectively.

If you are using directional/timed...IMO you are getting a great dice role simulation mixed with user skill to sit on pitches, work counts, use the different swing types but in the end the ratings really play a big role in the outcome...hence the great hitting variety and statistical outcomes.

Same goes for pitching. For me classic pitching is amazing. I used to be a meter guy before I came to The Show. Meter for me became user skill driven and it still is. And that is cool. Those that want more user input.....that is the best interface. Some like analog, some like pulse which is a hybrid of classic.

Again the fact we have so many interface options is a massive strength of this series.

Totally agree. And this, in a nutshell, is what troubles me about the growth of online gaming and Esports. These are focused on the skill of the player, since they are player v player competition. Ideally, the teams they are using, one would think, would be roughly equal, so the skill of the player is what truly matters. On the other hand, we have gamers like me, who only play offline franchise (in any videogame sport). I don't care about my skill level, I want the results on the field (or court, or ice, or whatever) to be primarily dependent on player ratings. I am not sure it is possible to make both sides happy.

If you play classic pitching and directional/timed hitting you should be quite happy with the simulation aspect of this game.

I have never played a console sports game (where you have user controller input) that has replicated it's respective sport better than The Show. And they continue with each iteration to set the bar higher and higher and that is getting lost in the shuffle. It is still a great game. I think most players here want some more innovation in terms of the modes being upgraded. And I don't disagree with that sentiment. But man this game is still a blast and joy to play and the consistency of the excellent gameplay is what set's this game apart from other sports games.

Agreed, I am not saying The Show has not done a decent job at this. I was just responding to the trend toward online gaming and Esports (and Sony's mention about user skill mattering more). For me, Front Page Sports Football Pro did a great job in making ratings really matter while allowing user control. After FPSFBPRO, I'd say High Heat Baseball and NFL2k5 also did this pretty well.
