Re: The upcoming release of the PS5 is why some of you should be patient with SDS

First off, the PS5 is years away and won't have any significant jumps in technology unless they wait another 3-4 years for Raytracing to mature.

I don't understand why the MLB team doesn't drive to Santa Monica and visit Naughty Dog (also owned by Sony). ND's animation and physics engines are superior to anything we've seen on the Playstation family of consoles. Also, the ND studio is co-located with Sony's ICE team. For those who don't know, the ICE team is the group behind the core graphics technologies used by every Playstation developer.

tldr; MLB The Show could be a superior product with little investment because the investments were already made through other Sony subsidiaries. It's all about communication...

Its not years away its late 2020 at latest and that is a little less then 2 years away and it will be a solid jump has that would be 7 years after ps4 most gens have been 5-6 years but if you go from pro to ps5 the jump will be smaller then if you go from regular ps4 to ps5.

I've read threats from some about not buying the game again. In my opinion, there has never been a baseball game created on any console in any era as good as The Show. It isn't perfect, but it still looks and sounds light years better than anything else, and I've been around since the Atari 2600 days. The option to replace fictitious players with real minor league players has always added a whole new dimension to the game. Has anyone ever thought that SDS has peaked with what it can do with the PS4's capabilities? It's frustrating when something else breaks in the game when they address a problem, but maybe the PS4 is at its limit.

It's going to be exciting to see what the team can do with the technology of the PS5 when it's released. We're going to have a good 6 or 7 sequels of The Show thereafter with revolutionary improvements they simply can't do with the aging PS4.

I say never give up on the SDS team and The Show. Enjoy '19 and look forward to what the PS5 brings.

So they've been working on the PS5 launch game for 3 years now? Because that's the last time we saw much of anything in terms of improvement with this series. It's just small improvements here and there and loading a lot of resources into Diamond Dynasty (which I don't play).

And it looks and sounds "better than anything else" because it's been the only baseball game on the market this entire generation. The bar you set there is very low.

There's a reason why I've almost entirely stopped buying sports games, and that's because there is no noticeable improvement anywhere from the launch of a generation to the end of it. It's just a few simple steps:

Launch - Game is bare boned with graphical improvements and new engine

Year 2 - brings the rest of the game along with it
Year 3 and beyond - same stuff as year two with slight improvements until the next generation rolls around

I guarantee you I could pop in The Show 16 and get updated rosters and fire up a game, tell people it's 19 and 90% of you would barely notice if the graphics and presentation were turned off.

What you say completely contradicts what the Sony Interactive Entertainment (SEI) CEO said last year and during their 4Q2018 earnings call earlier this year. Mr. Kodera said it would be mid-to-late 2021 at the earliest. The reason Sony isn't pushing the next PS is because there have not been any major technology jumps since the PS4 released. Really, outside of a true 4K experience, the next Playstation would be nothing more than a small hardware upgrade. Raytracing is the next big thing for the console industry, but its not matured and/or affordable enough yet for mass production.

The development team does not have the numbers to make all the changes people want, so they have to prioritize. In the business world, profit is always a top priority...regardless of what companies publicly say. The developers are beholden to Sony who is beholden to the shareholders, whom likely don't play video games much at all.

EDIT: I just read Kenichiro Yoshida's 3-year plan (2018 -2020) and there is no mention of anything that could be a PS5. He even called out an expected profit dip leading up to 2021.

My guess is Sony doesn't encourage sharing technology between its studios. Take Two is also like that. The only company that I can think of that allows sharing technology is Ubisoft.

EA’s Frostbite was shared tech, it was developed by the Scandinavian team making Battlefield and pushed into the sports titles made in Orlando and Vancouver.

It will not be the jump that the PS4 was, which was not the jump the PS3 was, which was not...

We are pretty far down the asymptote at this point. To get even a PS3 to 4 level jump you probably would need 15 years at this point? Maybe more? It’s not a linear thing.

And then you have to realize that TV's have to be able to show it, and the human eye has to be able to tell the difference.

We haven’t even talked about price. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed because I realize many don’t keep up with that, but the latest graphics cards from Nvidia retail for over $1000. Now, they don’t use those for the consoles, but high end graphics were not that expensive before.

You’re seeing the console market kind of at an impasse. If they keep the cycle, to recoup the development of such an expensive machine, the price point will have to be high (think $800+). Or, they wait, which presents its own host of problems. So there is no guarantee the PS5 will be out and even less of a guarantee it will be worth it.

This is the time for SDS to be dedicating some development hours to a rewrite. The engine needs an overhaul badly and the point when you’ve done all you will do on the graphics side is the time to do that.

Sports games, especially MLB The Show, would benefit greatly from a subscription-based model (~$10 month). Company would receive a constant stream of cash and could work on a recurring schedule without forced overtime, crunch periods, etc. Also, the revenue could be used to develop all the game modes separately and producing quality content across all mods.

If you don't think this method works, just look at other titles that use this model on PC (iRacing, any MMORPG, etc.). I know MMORPGs aren't the best example because the player base is enormous, but iRacing is a very niche game. The major downside is that you'd be forced to be online; however, I'm sure that could be worked so you only have to be online once a month to verify you're still a paying member.

I don't know how much the PS5 will have to offer, but I do know that film animation studios have to offer, and I don't think we are even close to sniffing that yet and they keep getting better. Until we catch them, I'd say we still have quite a ways to go.

Then we have to catch whatever the hell the Avatar sequels are going to put out. I don't think that will ever happen, but again we are not almost done improving the visuals is all I'm saying.

No I agree about the Jumps being less and less because graphics have gotten so good already but if you go from ps4 regular to ps5 I think the Jump will be pretty good just because going from like 1080p to like 4k or even like 1800p or something and improvements to HDR will make things a lot better and I have heard a lot of people say that HDR on regular ps4 dont looks has good has HDR on ps4 pro.

if it wasn't for multiple modes especially online.. if they only had one MAJOR mode to focus on every year (franchise) we wouldn't be complaining as much. so if online gaming never became a thing no one would care about all this stuff we are debating about because of every once of the entire team's attention...

so if anything is to blame... is that people actually care about playing other humans... instead of the computer every day all day...

It's a direct and clear rebuttal to those who say the Show looks and animates the way it does because it's reached the "console's limits" or "already maxed out the console."

The Show's current graphics/animations, while ok, do not represent the maxed out graphical abilities and power of the PS4 (Pro).
