I don't think you got carried away at all.

I just wanted to point out that there is a possible negative effect of franchise fans not playing the game.

All that said, there isn't a lot of evidence that fans who have played the mode religiously the last couple years has resulted in positive results either.

They play thru a season of MTO, start liking the idea of playing a season and then either advance that MTO season into franchise, or they jump out of MTO all together and then start up a franchise brand new. They realize they can play with more up to date rosters, and can still play franchise mode pretty much how they played MTO, but using critical moments and simming games. They also have the ability to quick manage where they have to option to jump in and out of games as they see fit. They then get the full experience of call ups/send downs, injuries, trades, and the off season. And they still have the option to make this auto if they don't want to deal with it.

Maybe it does or maybe it doesn't. I guess we'll know about 6-8 months from now.
Good post. I applaud you for a serious attempt at trying to connect the dots. I just disagree with your premise that someone who rejects micromanagement will suddenly get that itch. I mean you're going from extreme bare bones to setting up all these options and downloading rosters and jumping in and out of games manually...I don't see it. Not on any measurable level anyway. Sure, one or two guys maybe. lol

I agree that only time will tell though.

As long as we still can edit their salary. I'm good. But its thoughtful of SDS to get it in.

It just doesn't make sense on so many different levels, yet some are trying really hard to make this line of thinking stick.

MTO can be a new mode just for the sake of a new mode. Its existence doesn't hinge on some weird justification for how it dovetails with a different mode. Having it be some feeder into franchise mode that will change people's gaming habits and preferences is a very large leap in logic.
The point of that theory isn't that Sony wants people to play franchise mode.

The point is more like the developers at SDS want to improve franchise mode, but they can't dedicate resources to doing so until the bean counters have data that shows it would be a worthwhile investment.

Transferring more people to franchise via MTO gives them the data that they can then use as justification to put more resources into expanding franchise mode.

If, for example, their current data shows the same people playing franchise mode every year regardless of updates, why would Sony sign off on a big investment in making it better? To please people who are already buying the game anyway and not buying stubs within their mode of choice? That's a bad investment (from a bean counter perspective).

But if the data instead shows interest in franchise mode is growing, then SDS can point to that to justify further investment from those who hold the purse strings.

I have no idea whether that theory actually holds water. Maybe SDS has the autonomy to make that call on their own. But I suspect they don't.

As long as franchise players remains a static group who buy the game and don't use the mode to buy stubs in game, it won't change much.

It may not sway a high number people, as the target audience of MTO may still find the task of playing thru franchise mode too daunting. But I think this is a better "intro" to get new players into franchise mode than their previous attempts of Phases, Quick Manage, and Critical Situations.

A combination of all 4 may do the trick, or it may not.

Yep. I go from playing the bottom of the 9th inning only, sim, then three innings, sim.........Now you defeat the purpose of this mode thinking it will drive these people into playing full games. It defies logic.

Why would the developers want to, though? Your argument is still relying on some sort of intrinsic, hidden (mythical?) motivation on the part of the developers to crusade for franchise mode. Like they want to improve it so bad, but they just can't. I don't get that sense--I actually get the opposite sense like they'd drop it if they could (like season mode). Seems to me like most of the devs actually don't prefer franchise mode and they talk much more excitedly about other areas of the game. It also seems to me like the developers have a good deal of latitude to take on projects of their choosing and interest. Of course, these projects are likely being somewhat informed by their data collection systems. It also seems to me like being the franchise mode dev is kind of like having the hot potato--every year for the past 3, at least, it's been a completely new cast of characters with no [apparent] continuity. Heck, Luis Martinez used to be the main franchise developer and now he's basically around to show off legends and work on DD from what I can gather. Then there was a pair of new guys last year that worked on improved retirement logic and I didn't see either one of them on this most recent stream. The mode really needs a 'champion' inside the building, but I don't think there really is one.

I'll probably play the two new modes. I like the improved gameplay and presentation the most this year.

Then why does Nick mainly work on RTTS and why did Luis jump over to DD? I think I have that right, anyway. Hard to champion something you're not working on.
