They've only really scratched the surface with this path tbh, they've got a long way to build into if they want to expand on it in the future. It's not surprising they wanted to keep it controlled and in a fairly static setting in it's first year

I think people should also keep in mind just how bare bones the narration was in the first year they added it to RTTS. They expanded on it in the second year but it was still very basic. This year they are expanding on it again and just now getting into relationships and more interactions with other team members. Even those interactions though will be fairly generic. In videos for RTTS they show Jedd Gyrko approaching the player, but my guess is that it will be an interaction that they could slide any player from any team into and have the conversation be relevant.

I guess what I am saying is if this follows the path of RTTS I expect the storylines to continue to be expanded.

How is it a franchise feature? Every other game mode will use the same elements. You will get the exact same experience playing a quick play game.

Was sceptical at first but after watching all the new presentations goodies I am impressed and as RTTS guy the MTO is something I thing I would enjoy more than a long drawn out franchise season, I like it

It is not franchise specific but it is still a franchise feature. If a car manufacturer adds GPS to all of their car models is it any less a feature for car model A because it is also a feature for car model B?

I understand that people want franchise specific improvements but the presentation elements are still a feature of franchise if you play out your games.

Yeah, but while the GPS update is great, how does it help when the steering is still quirky, unresponsive, and has not been untouched for years? You use both the GPS and steering at the same time, but an update to one doesn't necessarily make the other function better "under the hood".

It's a very minor little things but it bugged me a ton last year. It looks like the pine tar on bats has been fixed. Last year if you put it on it didn't really look like anything was on the bat. The few shots of guys with it definitely looked better this year.

Pine tar. We talkin about pine tar. Lol that's what I was hearing in my head as I was typing.

Well, that wasn't the argument I was responding to. I never said that the presentation helped fix any existing issues in franchise mode, just that it could not be dismissed as not being a franchise feature because it is in other modes.

Even EA NHL which has a very small dev team has surpassed the show's franchise. NHL scouting system got a huge upgrade and is now better than the show's, they have real amateur players for at least the Canadian juniors which mean you can bring in real prospects from the show (MVP had a minor league license and the show should look into this), you can relocate and expand the league and fully design your own stadium and uniforms, even your own mascot.

Say what you want about maddens franchise but it at least got some attention this year. The show hasn't done anything with franchise in years. Real life contracts for me is a scary thought because SDS hasn't even implemented the feature on the build they have and the game is out in basically two weeks. If you think Paul goldscmidt accpeting 20 mil a year is anywhere near realistic well then I have a bridge to sell you along with that beach front property.
I'll second this and I'm very surprised to be saying this:

NHL 19's franchise is deep. Very deep. I've been critical of the NHL series for a while this gen because like The Show, online play is the focus. HUT is the money maker.

Here is what EA NHL did vs what The Show is doing:

EA NHL focused its marketing efforts towards online players. Most of the content updates and tuning updates are geared towards the online modes. However, it quietly made meaningful changes to franchise mode. Fog of War is in it this year (if you've played OOTP, you know what this is) and it makes a HUGE difference.

                  Huge.

And EA NHL implemented the most robust scouting system available in any sports game (text sims not included) right now.

The Show, on the other hand, is using a similar marketing strategy WITHOUT making those quiet changes to franchise mode. My hope was that they made more changes to franchise than contracts because I get it: casual players don't want to hear developers talking about under the hood changes, like improved AI trade logic or progression tweaking. That doesn't generate viewers in today's sports video gaming climate, but they could have released a blog entry/write-up of those nitty gritty details.

But they didn't. Because they didn't make those improvements.

No matter what a developer does, a player like this is always going to get back to that point (whether it is DD, RTTS, Franchise, etc.). Sure they could do a massive overhaul to the mode....one might have an intermediate period where it is "new" to them....but it will always revert back to that point. No matter what game devs do, It'll never be enough.

This happened to me AGAIN last year (after years of being a "franchise only" guy), I couldn't get into franchise after about a month or two. Previous years, I would've shelved the game...but I loved the gameplay so much in 18 that I did something different......I started playing DD (offline only) and it was a totally different mindset when I played and it was SO refreshing. I was still playing a fantastic baseball game, but the mental focus was different (more on player performance vs team results).

A funny thing happened, after the new DD content dried-up in December (after I sunk 100s of hours into the mode), I went back to franchise....I started a new franchise and with the full broadcast package of the mode (vs the abbreviated presentation DD has) and all the other bells and whistles the mode has, it was a totally refreshing experience. I was rejuvenated and am plowing through my franchise months later.

This is what excites me for 19 the most. I can play moments, or MtO, or DD, or RTTS mixed in with my franchises. Different mindsets/attitudes for each mode. Mind you, I am not a big Player career mode kind of guy BUT, I am going to give RTTS a real honest shot this year....I'd be doing myself a disservice otherwise. Moments, MtO, DD...they're all getting a ton of play from me. It's all baseball....just different ways of experiencing them.

I really hope that others who read this do themselves the favor of giving every mode in the game a real shot. You might really surprise yourself, much as I did myself last year.
Lol you did exactly what people are trying to make known what SDS wants players to do and got bored with a neglected mode and went to their $$ bread and butter mode. And you can’t even recognize that. And not only that, you’re calling out those same people for not doing likewise.

And your putting the staleness on the user is asinine. If baseball itself were boring to us we would play a different game altogether, the game itself is fine. The gameplay is good. The mode is redundant and unchanged. Playing DD isn’t even the same game to me, it’s not MLB. The fact is I played franchise for years in all sports games and kept going back excited the next year. My excitement is waning now because it’s the same experience as 4 years ago.

What happened to owner mode, what happened to worrying about TV deals and putting fans in the seats? They removed all of it because they deemed it superfluous and then never put in anything to replace it. The day to day grind in franchise is dull. Playing the games is great, but I feel disconnected and like I’m racing through the season just to get to the next “phase”. Where are the out of town highlights? The spring training battles and expanded rosters? The emphasis on a pennant race or making trade deadlines feel like a big experience?

As a result I now just play along with the real MLB. I only make roster moves that occur in real life with 30 team control. I play behind the actual schedule and allow the real MLB to be my storyline. I just control my Pirates and manage my team as a skipper would do during the gameplay. Everything else is up to real life. I find myself looking forward to getting to a certain date to call up a prospect in the game that got called up in real life. But if SDS ever gave me more stuff to do I’d go back to doing my own world of franchise in a heartbeat, where I’m trying to work deals and improve my club on a daily basis. It’s just bare bones.

I can honestly say that I never considered presentation to be a franchise feature. When I think of "franchise features", I'm looking at contracts, minor leagues, scouting, owner mode options, etc. Those are specifically franchise features. Not in other modes (save some crossover for RttS).

Presentation is a core game mechanic - a feature of the game itself, not part of any mode, but the total experience.

But perhaps this is just an argument about semantics...

First off, contract extensions is a nice feature. I also love the ability to front load or back load the contract. Since I use 30 team control I will use my random number method (1-33 in season extension worked out, 34-99 wait till off-season/1-50 resign 51-99 test free agency) in looking at star, key players, veteran player extensions or free agency. This also allows me more immersion with that aspect big time! Storylines will really be taken to new levels for my franchises.

Presentation - Folks......they really worked on this aspect. I am so impressed with all the “little things” they have added in terms of pre-pitch cameras, the options in using those pre pitch cameras. The amount of information the score bugs give us on screen and via drop down boxes, the redone theme 1 and theme 2. The lineup screens, the all new crowd audio....the audio itself sounds rich and top notch as well. Hedi Watney is a huge add. Now we have a sideline reporter giving us all kinds of dynamic storyline commentary, and then in the post season it will be dynamic as well. This is the kind of stuff franchise mode desperately needed. And those of us that play 120-162 games a season....man there will be ton’s of new “little things” for us to hear and enjoy. As far as stadium sounds.....I fully utilize Sounds Of The Show and I will say it every cycle, if you are not using this incredible and immersive franchise feature you are selling yourself so short on the immersion it brings you in your franchise. It is one of the best sports game features period. I am able to set up 3 different themes. This year theme 1 will be the regional broadcast package that I will implement, and Theme 2 will be the day at the ball park package I will implement. And of course we have the MLB network package. I can’t say it enough how cool it is. So what about those StadiumSounds you can earn? I love that. And I look forward to earning those and maybe even using them on my own Sounds of The Show files. Nothing wrong with that new feature at all!!!

Franchise Mode - So again nothing was overhauled and I know I really want scouting and drafting and player development to be more immersive and intuitive. That is a big item on my franchise improvement list. I am pretty much resigned to the fact that full single A ball will not be here till next gen (PS5). I am someone who enjoys franchise mode a lot and I know they tuned AI again...they do it every cycle. Player Morale also can use more love. Contract extensions will help for the following season with that morale bug of guys feeling they are under paid....but at the same time I am able to not let that affect overall ratings for every player that has that dilemma. Some players I cannot because there are too many other morale factors not working in his favor. So you know what? Maybe you should make a storyline for that player and put him on the trade block. Again to me franchise mode is all about storylines.....not spreadsheets. And that brings us to....

March To October - The storyline driven franchise experience has been born. This mode is something I will sink my teeth into with multiple teams. I love the dynamic narratives they are going to bring. And this stuff will eventually make it’s way into our traditional franchise mode. Which to me is awesome. I am all about storylines and presentation and this is a mode that features just that. It get’s you connected to your team, your title chase, your pennant heartbreak. It taps the emotional and romantic side of baseball. No spread sheets can do that for me. But high quality presentation brings out the best of sports games. And especially a game like baseball which is a marathon of a season. Ups, downs, tension, slumps, hot streaks......March To October is going to transform franchise for the better long term. Right now it does have some limitations in terms of injuries, trades and rosters.....but I am looking forward to these presentation elements totally being implemented into our traditional franchise mode with custom rosters, injures, trades call up’s and send downs.....the upside is unlimited man. See the forest through the trees folks.

This is all great stuff happening. So you are either on board or your getting off the train.

For me.....I am stoked for 19. I am excited to play my normal franchise files and I am very excited to have some fun with March To October but more importantly I am very excited for the future of franchise mode. They put a lot of work into the March To October and these presentation and storyline assets will be used in franchise mode in the future....big time. And that is awesome.

MLB The Show 19 is not the same game. They have added two really cool modes that have a lot of upside and potential and laying the ground work for better and bigger things to come. Moments and March To October have me giddy for some great MLB fun and immersive gameplay. Couple that with the gameplay improvements, presentation improvements and audio upgrades.....we are setting up for a fantastic cycle.

A little over 2 weeks away!!!!!
Damn it just reading that makes me want to change my mind of finishing my season on 18 before buying 19. I knew you would do this. Lmao.

That's far from an apples to apples analogy. I get what you're trying to say, but from my perspective, asking me to buy MLB 19 and accept presentation as a franchise upgrade is like asking me to buy the 2019 model of a car I bought last year and accept GPS upgrades as an engine upgrade.

Include me in the group that would’ve liked a few more new features such as a more in depth scouting system, deeper coach profiles, rotating interleague schedules and a few others.

But I love the new OSD’s. Excited about how the one in the top corner has drop down info. I like how they changed Theme 1 and 2. They are not only much better but definitely needed to be changed as they were getting a little stale. The new pre-pitch camera angles I think will go a long way in keeping things fresh as you play a ton of games through the season. Some of them are really beautiful shots especially if you watch baseball and enjoy the sport.

Sometimes you have to keep things in perspective. I can see how some people feel MTO was unnecessary and franchise needed the attention. I don’t think that its at all unreasonable. Especially once franchise mode fans found out there are no injuries and customs rosters in that mode. The average franchise guy will not continue in Franchise without real Minors, so they look at this mode as a total waste of time.

But this is by a longshot the very best looking and fun to play baseball game that has ever been made. It has been that way for years and there has never been a release that has not been vastly improved from the previous one. SDS has proved themselves a dedicated and hard working group and because the game overall is so great, I’m willing to give them a one-year pass on the lack of new additions. I don’t care all that much about in-season extensions or real salaries but the presentation improvements are going to be really good.

I will once again pre-order and put more hours in to this game than any other game that I buy all year. Hard to come in here and spew negativity when I know that will be the case.

I am not trying to say anyone should buy it simply because the presentation updates are a franchise feature, simply stating that it is a feature that affects franchise.

How important that feature is to each individual gamer is up for them to decide.

It hurt my heart, when Kirby said that all the batter pitcher analysis is in the pause menu. When Heidi was talking about how many hits the team had. I hate that why not put it on the touchpad, all that information is buried menus again this year.

I say presentation is a franchise feature, simply because a lot of OSD's and Commentary are germane to franchise, like RTTS report, 2nd half talk of pennant races, batting avg talk ect... when you get to August September the commentary and story lines are geared toward October and The Dynamic Loading screen is one helluva OSD, if you cycle through them great scouting tool.
