I’ve turned everything to “off” in settings instead of switching it to game mode. For some reason the picture in game mode is incredibly dark.

I would never play The Show on a TV, can't be bothered with TV's crappy colour gamut or refresh rate and trickery they use for refresh. I only play The Show on a 32' 4k VA panel monitor and last year i hit on legend with pitch speeds at 10. If my only choice was to play on a TV, it would most likely only be on a SONY 900 series TV, only cause it has as decent colours out of any TV manufacturer apart from OLEDS. Samsung is a the worse when it comes to whites, their whites look blue!, it needs to be calibrated way too much to bring whites at a decent level and that sacrifices its brightness in doing so. LG gets a fair pass. I'm not saying this because i was a SONY TV vendor rep, but those are the facts .

Look for TVs with low input lag at whatever resolution you desire.

Am I understanding input lag incorrectly? I thought it was the lag from button press to action on screen.

Looks like input lag on my TCL 55P607 is 47.8 without game mode and 13.9 with it. The Sony W600B I have been using is 33.9, nothing on rtings about if that’s with game mode or without. I don’t know if that’s a big enough difference but I’ll try it. TCL local dimming works in game mode so I shouldn’t see picture degradation like some posted.

I have a Samsung KS8000 and when I switch to game mode the picture is noticeably brighter. It also turns the backlight to 20 when playing an HD game or UHD movie.

I figured it out. For some reason it was switching my backlight to 14 when I switched to game mode. Now I can’t decide between 2 or 3 gamma hah!

I think when playing any game to always use game mode.

I accidentally forgot to turn it on when I bought my new TV a couple months ago, and I played The Show and was unplayable and I was freaking out and thinking I had to return the TV.

You simply cannot pitch with the meter when it's not in game mode.

My TV has game mode, and a low latency mode. So I barely have any input lag. I mean it's there, but not noticeable.

"Input lag" itself is a misnomer. It is a real thing, but encompasses all of the process that you described, which includes things like how long it takes the signal from the controller to reach the console, how long it takes the console to register the input, and how long it takes the video output to travel along the HDMI cable.

When talking about TVs and gaming, most people use "input lag" when they really mean "response time". It usually is the largest factor that contributes to input lag, so it's understandable why people do it, but it is only one part of the equation. Response time is the amount of time between when the signal is received by the tv and when the difference is actually displayed. That is what the times are indicating.

Most response times are calculated using a GtG (grey to grey) response test. This is done because it is the ideal condition for a pixel to change its state with most screen technology. It does mean that response times can be, at least in practical usage, longer than what is listed.

In summary, when most people talk about input lag, they are usually referring to GtG response times. For example, my 1080p gaming monitor has a 1ms GtG. In a regular conversation, I could just say it has a 1ms input lag, and most people (tech nerds) would know what that means.

Agree with most that has been said in this thread.

I recently purchased a new samsung 65inch 4k hdr tv (last years Q9FN model) and at first it was choppy.
Then i turned off the auto motion (i believe it's called) and now it is smooth as butter.
I play on balanced setting on a ps4 pro with hdr on....the colors are gorgeous.

Due to the super smoothness of this tv, i am hitter better. The timing has become easier so i had to up the difficulty.

It's a great tv for gaming.

Also note that some Samsung TV's (no idea if other brands work this way) also have the option of renaming the source to "PC" , which will give the best image quality signal for gamers as far as input latency , post processing and overscan is concerned.

So I’m better off with it than without it, regardless of how much it affects the things you described. I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for the explanation.

I got this from rtings: “The TV only shows 4:4:4 color properly when in 'PC mode'. For most sources this is accomplished by changing the input's icon to 'Computer'.”

Maybe this is for a lot of tvs.
