Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread
Cards miss sweeping the Mets after bullpen implodes....again
The Cardinals were going for the series sweep against the Mets last night, but failed to accomplish that goal as the bullpen again, blew the lead. The Cardinals were up 6-2 heading to the 7th after Drew Harrington pitched a great game, his only two runs allowed were both unearned thanks to back to back errors by Yairo Munoz and then Jo Adell (although Adell's was a tough error). In the 7th inning, Jordan Hicks allowed 2 runs to score on a Nolan Arrenado 2 run homerun with 1 out, making the score 6-4. Zach Burdi was brought on to get the last two outs of the 7th. In the 8th, Osuna struck out the side preserving the 6-4 advantage. In the 9th, Trevor Rosenthal walked the the first two men he faced and then proceeded to give up a 3 run bomb to Pete Alonso, giving the Mets the 7-6 lead, and eventually the win.
This is the 2nd save that Rosenthal has blown this week and his 4th already this season and we have 4 days to go in April. Rosenthal blew 7 games all of last season. There was rumors during the offseason about the Cards potentially moving Rosenthal and moving Osuna to the closer role. I don't expect Rosenthal to be moved, but Matheny announced that Osuna will assume the closer role for the upcoming series against the Brewers. Matheny quickly stated that this is not a permanent move, but rather one to try to let Rosenthal relieve himself of pressure and re-focus.
The Cardinals are all too familiar with bullpen issues and to have to deal with them again this year is extremely frustrating. One thing is for sure though, if the Cardinals do look to move Rosenthal, they won't have any trouble finding a suitor as he was highly sought after during the winter.Last edited by countryboy; 07-19-2019, 01:56 PM.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread
Disclaimer: I also posted this in the trade discussion thread, but since most everyone here is a dedicated 'chiser like myself, I figured I'd throw it in here as well. Feel free to ignore.
In the search for some advice. I guess this isn't a "is this a good trade" but more of a "should I do this trade" post. Will try to give as much background info as possible to make this scenario as clear as I can for you guys...
I'm at the ASB of year 2022 and have been in contention for the playoffs every year since 2016 (when I started this chise). Trade I'm thinking of making at the deadline:
3B Rafael Devers (.282/.338/.518, 15 HR, 46 RBI - another year of control left 84 OVR)
SP Travis West (AA, 19 years old, B potential, 2026+ ETA)
3B Jeremy Hughes (A, 21 years old, C potential, 2026+ ETA)
for
SP Jose Berrios (8-7, 3.07 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 146 K, 43 BB, 123 IP - last year of contract 92 OVR)
General thoughts:
Devers is my starting 3B and has been for the last 4 years. Usually bats in the 5 hole and has been a great player for me. I also have Eduardo Nunez (.272/.322/348, 2 HR, 38 RBI) who would slide into the starting role for this year and next - a definite downgrade. My rotation is solid but I'd say my 4/5 guys are serviceable at best, adding Berrios would give me 4 very good options in the post season.
On the other hand, I'm also second to last in the MLB in HRs, and letting Devers go would deplete my lineup of power even more than it already is (I've also got 2x MVP Conforto on the IL until September).
In addition, I've made a move at the deadline for the past 6 seasons to improve my team. I feel like I'm depleting my farm system to some degree, but it's also netted me 3 WS in the last 6 years so it's paid dividends. Am I too concerned about my farm system when making moves has proven to lead me to championships?
This year also feels different because it's the first time I will be giving up a starter, so the big league team suffers in an area (an already weak area) while improving in another. It's also the biggest 'splash' of a move I would've made at the deadline. Typically I'm trading for a bullpen arm or positional depth.
Sorry for the rambling, 'stream of conciousness' post, but I've been back and forth on this for the last few days and was looking for opinions one way or the other.
Thanks in advance.Comment
