    Spring training

Do you play every game? Half the games?

I told myself I was going to play every game in my Indians franchise, but this seems like a tall task. I thought about playing 10 games or so, getting a feel for my guys, pitch releases etc and simming the rest. What do you guys do?

I sit my best players in Spring Training away games and play my roster hopeful and minor leaguers all 9 innings. I generally sim all Spring Training home games with my guaranteed starters.

      Re: Spring training

I started a Franchise last year and I actually played every pitch of every game in Spring Training (I believe it was 27 games). It may be a bit much for some but I wanted to play the full season with no simming. I actually still have 16 games to go + playoffs before I move it over to 19.

I think when I do get to Spring Training in 19 I will continue playing the games. At least at first. It's been a challenge to find the right balance of difficulty and tweaking sliders to match my own skills in 18. With a new game out, that process will probably have to start again. So Spring Training offers meaningless games where you can trial and error your way through until you're comfortable with the results.

        Re: Spring training

I always do Spring Training, trying my best with maneuvering players around to match what the Blue Jays did in real spring training...takes a bit of time calling up and sending down and I always have to work 2 to 3 games ahead at doing that. So when regular season starts it's much easier, spring training is like work and regular season is where the fun begins. Plus I use a full spring training as a way to work on my slider so everything is fine tuned for opening day.

I play as many games in spring that it takes to feel like I have a good grasp on the game and can be at my best for the regular season...... always use spring training as my practice mode for the game

I dont know if this will help but this is what I used to do before I started playing every game of Spring Training.

I would play a game and send someone down who wasn't going to be on my 25 man regular season roster. That gave me 15 games to experiment with my roster or for guys to earn a spot if I could not make up my mind. But it also kept things moving for me so that it did not feel like a grind to get thru.

I like this idea, kind of like a “cut” day sprinkled throughout the games to keep it interesting, I’m going to use this idea, thanks

                Re: Spring training

I play every single game. Some games I have starters play all 9, others I have fringe guys play all 9, and then most games its a combination of starters, fringe players, and guys who are prospects.

I also pay attention to position battles. I sign some veteran major league guys to see how they do and if they don't work out I let them go.

I play every ST game. I mainly use it to settle my dynamic difficulty in for the Regular season.

                    Re: Spring training

need spring training help, this thread'll do as good as any. need help as to how to use my rotation. I have 25 spring training games, 12 starting pitchers and 7 relievers in my bullpen on my 40-man roster.

question is how many innings do pitchers start out throwing in their first few games and do they normally get up to speed to where they're pitching 6 or more spring training innings? if so, how many starts till they get up to speed?

looks like I have 5 ST starts for my top 5 starting pitchers. as for those 7 other starting pitchers, I guess they should pitch roughly the same amount of innings per game as my top 5 pitchers?

                      Re: Spring training

My starters go 3,3,4,5,6 innings and the last game goes to the best of the call-ups. Also the first 2 games if I hit 40 pitches their day is done and about 50 pitches for the 3rd game. Game 4 and 5 just proceed like a real game.

So that's about an extra 3 games of work for the season. I've followed that for 4 season across both '19 and 20. I'd probably change it up a bit if there was a battle for the last spot in the rotation or something.

I’d skip anyone that is a lock to make the rotation the first time through and then start slowly increasing their innings. Maybe something like 2,3,5, and 6 innings over their starts

I wanted to do the same, but with no real position battles to go by, I played a rotation and simmed a rotation, played a rotation, simmed a rotation. Just for spring, regular season, its every pitch of every game.

                              Re: Spring training

I play until all positions are decided. Sometimes it happens quickly, sometimes it takes all spring.

It has never failed me though. I'm usually able to spot a bad season forming. Sometimes players can shake off a bad spring or were just unlucky, and you also have a few instances where a guy who dominated spring wilters under the bright lights of the season, but you generally have a good idea whose going to perform and who is going to struggle.

Taking the time to play at least some of spring has always paid off with good information, even if it's just who I should call up in case of injury.
