Are SIM'd games actually "played" by the software?

I really don't know, but I have experimented with this in franchise. I'll sim a game (not saved at end), then play the same game in manage mode (not saved), then sim it again, then play it again and the results are dramatically different between sim game and played out games. Sim games tend to give more realistic results, especially the separation between the best and worst pitchers.

I remember someone told me once there are separate engines for simming and playing. I don't know if that's true, but the results between the 2 are quite different.

That is what I was wondering - if it was a different engine or not.

Do batters learn from past experiences with a pitcher in a game? Third time around and all that?

In played out games? I suppose they do to some extent. It could also be partly due to the pitcher tiring out. Most of the time though, the more times batters face pitchers, the better chance they have of doing something. At least that's what I've seen.
