Secondary Position Question

Since the devs mentioned a change to secondary positions from previous years, does anyone know the impact on a player if they are played at their secondary position vs their primary? Does the negative effect only impact fielding and not their bat?

Example:
Cal Ripken is listed at SS but 3b as a secondary
Gallo LF to 1b
etc....

Thoughts/ideas? Thanks!

Pretty sure it only impacts fielding and they have said what the percentage reduction is but I can't remember.

Don't think it affects hitting.

I thought the severe penalties came from playing positions they aren't listed for. I would guess there is some penalty for secondary positions.

Out of Position is the severe penalty

2ndary position the player can still perform on a high level especially if he has played the position before i.e. College or in the Minors.

Let say Bellinger Primary Position is CF and he is a Silver, his 2ndary is 1B and he is a Bronze or Borderline Silver, but if you put him in a position he has never played before like catcher, he will not have the animation package so there will be slight hiccups in his decision making and throwing delivery which will affect his fielding and accuracy, and if using button accuracy his green window will shrink dramatically.

If I remember correctly, their fielding attributes for secondary positions are about 80% of their primary position.

Example: If you have a fielder who has 90 fielding rating, their secondary position would be about 72.
If you play them completely out of position, they would take much bigger hit.

They also mentioned that the amount of the hit to the ratings a fielder takes is based on how bad out of position they are.

Example: a player plays 3B and you move him to 1B, but he does not have 1B listed as second position....He will still take a significant hit to ratings. But the hit ratings drop will be steeper if you place same player in OF or Catcher, because its a completely different set of skills required to play position.

For some reason, they only show the penalty in DD when you select your squad. If you put a player in their secondary position, you see their reduced defensive stats.

I can't believe they added this long overdue feature, but then left it out of the place where it matters the most... in game. You can't tell what type of hit you'll take if you put someone out of position or in a secondary position during actual gameplay. This same feature should be in the lineup screen pre-game and in the substitution screens during the game. Some of their design choices are pretty bad.

Were you able to tell how the % of decrease was for secondary positions and does it in fact correlate to how close that position is to their primary position?

They discussed this in a live stream one year and gave the percentages but I can't remember what it was. They put Ted Williams at first base and he was terrible defensively.

I think it might be 20% reduction for secondary and more severe for non-secondary. If you can find the dev stream where they put Ted Williams at first base they might give the exact percentage there. Bottom line is minor reduction for secondary and severe reduction for non-secondary.
