What I Learned About Batting

(1)You have to hold your controller lightly in your hands, be loose on the controller.


(2) You cannot press for hits, you have to be patient and wait on the best balls to come to you. Take the 1st or 2nd pitch for each batter if possible. Once the pitcher gets frustrated, he'll start throwing meatballs. (This is the main reason why I suck in hitting).


(3) Remember the L3 (PCI) is just a flick motion aiming at the incoming ball, that's all it is. It is not to chase the ball around the quadrants. Just flick it towards the ball direction.


I've been on a slight losing streak with my Reds Franchise because I am not following these rules lol.

It’s a tough balance between being patient and trigger happy. Because being patient can get you walks, being selective. But then it’s hard for me to pull the trigger on a meat ball.

I suck at hitting but I try to have the mindset of looking for a meat ball first and foremost and being disciplined enough to lay off if the ball seems to be traveling away away from the strike zone. So if the pitcher is good and can paint the corners then I’ll probably be behind the count pretty quick. If he’s missing the corners then I’ll be ahead in the count and meatballs might be coming my way, or a walk.

It gets difficult however when it come to having to protect the plate when down 2 strikes. It’s very difficult to lay off the curve balls and sliders that start in the zone and end off of the zone.

It’s also very frustrating when you want to be patient and take the first pitch, and it is a meat ball down the middle. Because then it becomes a friggen mind game. It’s tough feeling dumb for letting a meat ball go by, and then trying to stay patient and lay off the next pitch. So then I end up swinging at something outside of the zone or worse, deciding to be further selective and letting another meat ball go by.

Yes. I was going to go into even more detail. The hitting and pitching in The Show is pretty good. Captured the tense feeling perfectly, more so than any other game I’ve played. Feels good knowing I earned all the hits.

Generally I was taught the same thing: pick a pitch and a location, if it isn't there let it go. Unless under orders to take first pitch (let the guy on first try to steal or wait for a guy to throw a strike to make him work more).

Frustrating thing about watching the Yankees against Verlander all these years is their insistence on taking a strike on him and then he just pours the belt high fastball in on pitch one and they don't see another hitter's pitch the rest of the at bat.

I may start using your method at the plate.


I say take the first 2 pitches because I don't move my PCI until the pitch is thrown. Most times the CPU is smart, they want you to hit their first pitch to create a double play or weak grounder. Generally, that 1st pitch is a ball. I tell myself, I'm not swinging until I eat a strike. When lucky, you have taken the 1st two pitches and then you'll be at 2-0 in the count.

Agreed.

The general rule of thumb is that you're only going to get one good pitch to hit in a given at-bat, so I don't want to miss that pitch by being in take mode.

Until you have two strikes you should have a pitch and location in mind and swing if you get it. You want to hit your pitch not the pitcher's pitch. With 2 strikes all bets are off and you have to protect.

A big thing for me is understanding how contact swing + swing timing can be your best friend.

I work the count as best I can, and then if I see a pitch that's probably a strike, but not a pitch I want to hit, I put a late or very late contact swing on it, foul it off, and look for a better pitch.

Last night I was playing two of the historic teams, and I fouled off 5 pitches from Phil Niekro before making him pay with a double that scored the go-ahead run.
