Are you using guess pitch? or checking the pitchers repertoire with R2 before each pitch? As that used to get me some times in previous games, as R2 also freezes your baserunners, so if you press it wanting to see the pitch repertoire just as they pick off, your baserunner freezes instead.

Bingo. I was wondering about that. The controller instructions says R2 "stops"runners. I use AUTO, so immune to this, but I think you hit the nail on the head.

Just curious, on manual field if you hit a deep fly to the outfielder and have a runner on first and are not sure it will clear the fielder, is R2 used to freeze that runner in place until you're sure???

I use auto baserunning also. I do press R2 to check pitches/confidence every pitch. Could that do it?

Yes, it's probably the problem as R2 freezes runners. It's not an innate game bug I don't think, as it's never happened to me this year (it did a couple of years ago before I realised that was causing me to get picked off)

Huh. Mystery solved. Thanks. What is the gameplay purpose of using R2 to freeze runners? And why map it to the same button used for something else?

It's for freezing runners halfway between bases on fly balls/line drives so that they don't get doubled off or forced out easily when they're unable to reach the next base. Usually it's handled by the CPU, but there still needs to be a user control for it on "edge cases" that the AI doesn't pick up on.

As for why it's mapped there....there's only so many buttons on the controller, and since the other main baserunning controls (advance/return all) are mapped to shoulder buttons, it seems like a good place for it.

TBH I didn't know it could freeze a runner leading off, though.
