Rumor: PS5 to have ability to transfer PS4 save files

Taking backward compatibility to a whole new level, Sony is imbuing the PS5 with the capability to carry over save files from the PS4. So if you’ve started a game on PS4, you’ll be able to transfer that progress over to the PS5 (when it comes out) and pick up from where you left off.

Here's to hoping that MLBTS can take full advantage, enabling us to transfer franchise/RTTS files to the PS5 version from the PS4. Would be nice not to have to give up a franchise you've been running for years in order to upgrade. The functionality will be there, if the article is true.

Now if we could only get year-to-year roster transfers...

from a selfish view, and small picture rather than large I'd personally rather SDS have carry-over roster transfer over backwards compatibility

Honestly this is not news. There is nothing unique about the PS5 hardware or infrastructure that would make it any different than a PS4. It's just a PS4... But better.

It's like transferring your files from an old computer to a new one. There's not going to be an issue.

We could transfer files from the PS3 to the PS4, and the PS3 was a very unique piece of hardware.

So if you had a franchise file from 13 (PS3), you could load that file into the PS4 version of 13? Would the 14 version recognize it as a carry-over?

I had no idea you could do this...

...no. 14 kicked off carry-overs and 15 was the first one to carry-over, from 14.

Actually The Show 13 never released on the PS4...so doesn't matter anyway

14 was on both. Not sure about 15, but 15 was on Vita and you could transfer your save between the two.

Save files are not that hard to bring between different platforms.

I'll be cool just to see the RTTS guys I've had since 14. Their long journeys from one platform to the next. Crossing the finish line into retirement and then blowing all their money so they can beg for jobs as bench coaches and managers.

Will the ps4 disc work in a ps5?

What will be the advantage of a ps5? ps4 was a significant upgrade from the ps3 but it's hard to see how they could improve the Show at this point.

The PS4 disc should work in the PS5, but that is the thing I'm least sure about.

I suspect the biggest draw to convert to PS5 will be the framerate. High framerate TVs are more and more common these days, but PS4 can only push out a maximum of 60 fps. Higher framerates will be a massive boon to the Show.

Outside of the Show, I suspect there will be a few games that utilize the higher specs of the PS5 and can't run on the PS4, but I suspect a lot of early games will play on both, but the PS5 version will have graphical options that are locked while playing on a PS4, similar to how the current PS4/PS4 Pro ecosystem works.

Thanks. Next question is whether a ps5 disc would work in a ps4. I'm not inclined to get rid of my stack of ps4 games just for a new machine. The one thing that might force me to do so is if the ps4 version is just a roster update and the ps5 has all the new improvements.

                      I'm also not thrilled about owning a ps3 - for NCAA 14 - ps4 and ps5.

My misgivings about physical media aside, no, a PS5 disc likely won't work on a PS4. It is possible, in this day and age, that the disc reader could detect the game and then just download the data of the internet, but the PS5 will be using a new "ultra-blue ray" format.

I suspect that for games that are for both systems, they will come on a regular blue ray and any extra data that is needed for the PS5 version will be downloaded. Physical media is a pretty outdated form of distribution to begin with. I was honestly shocked when it was announced that the system would have an optical drive at all.
