Cardinals and Kolten Wong agree to one year deal

The Cardinals and Kolten Wong have agreed on another one year deal, this time at a discounted rate of $5.5M for the year.

The 37 year old is coming off one of his best seasons in a Cardinals uniform last season where he hit over .260 and led the major leagues in walks drawn.

Wong will most likely be slated into the number 8 position in the lineup and be the everyday second baseman, as the Cardinals look to groom his replacement, as soon as they find one.

The Cardinals have been quiet thus far in free agency, but are reportedly active in trade discussions.

Countryboy, you are a beast. Wish I could dedicate myself to a long running franchise without losing interest and restarting. Respect.[emoji106]

I have an All-Star game question. Does the computer regularly switch out players, or is it basically the same starting 9 the entire game?

I believe it’s played exactly like a spring training game.

Cardinals to acquire Andrew Knizner from Reds

Your last two World Series Champions have agreed to a trade, an inter-division trade at that. The Cardinals and Reds are finalizing a deal that will bring catcher Andrew Knizner to the Cardinals. Knizner who was the starting backstop for the Cards on their 2026 World Series Championship club, was surprisingly, and amusingly (not really), let go by the Cardinals when they failed to offer arbitration to then 31 year old and he became a free agent, quickly scooped up by the Reds on a 5 year $26M deal.

Cardinals front office expressed public dismay for the botched submission of paperwork and publicly appealed to Knizner that he was not just cast aside by the club in favor of top prospect Devon Snow.

Now a year later, Knizner has his second World Series ring after the Reds defeated the Red Sox this past year and appears to be returning home to St.Louis where he came thru the organization. Knizner who was not the starter, but rather backup to Stuart Turner, was made available the minute the offseason started as the Reds possess a plethora of catching depth within the organization.

While all the pieces of the trade are not immediately known, it is known that the Cardinals will be sending OF Eddie Ortiz to the Reds as part of the exchange. The 26 year old was the NLCS MVP in 2026 as he played a pivotal role in the absence of Juan Fabregas who was injured for much of the season. Who, if anyone else, is/will be involved in this trade is yet to be determined.

If this trade goes through, and there is no reason to believe it won't, the Cardinals will then be faced with the task of either having Snow or Knizner play backup to the other, platoon them, or move one of them, which you would think would be Snow, as the young highly touted prospect, has the tools to be a an all-star catcher one day, but his progress has slowed a bit and he wasn't as productive, especially in managing games behind the dish, as the Cards had hoped.

We will see how this unfolds and plays out. If the Cardinals do indeed make Snow available, they will have no shortage of willing trade partners.

Can anyone confirm if manual lineup changes before games that are simulated actually have an affect on the outcome of your player?

For example I will manually adjust the roster and but my players whose bats are hot at the top of the order and when they cool off I switch them around until they get hot again as is done in real life.

I actually sim 1 game at a time because I hate how the cpu makes roster changes randomly.

I was just wondering if my manual changes are futile in the overall bigger picture since I’m simming.

                    Any thoughts?

                        Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs win final homestand 2-1 against Pirates
The Cubs were able to win the last home series of the regular season. AJ Puk took the mound and the loss in game 1 as the Cubs couldn’t keep pace with the pirates in a 5-3 L. Puk gave up 4 and the bullpen let another run in late to pad the Pirates lead. In the middle game the Cubs were able to get the win 4-2 but had a scare as Brailyn Marquez had to be pulled in the 4rd inning. The Cubs were added by double from Anthony Rizzo but the main concern after the game was the health of their young lefty. Marquez’s MRI came back negative and was diagnosed with back stiffness as the club reports he likely will be available for the NLDS if he is needed. In the final game the Cubs were able to win 6-5. Kyle Hendrick was able to add the icing on what was his best season of his career as he was able to get his league leading 20th win. The Cubs were able to jump the early lead when a Brennan Davis trip and Nico Horner home run put them up in the 2nd. The Cubs would add more when Kris Bryant doubled and Contreras would get to 3rd on a ball that Polcano couldn’t handle in the outfield. The Cubs had the late 6-2 lead when the bullpen looked like they might give Hendricks win. Kyle Ryan gave up 3 runs in the 9th but Clase was able to get the final 2 outs to secure teh 6-5 win; this was also Clase‘s 55th save which tops the MLB.

Chicago rest starters for last tune up before playoffs

The Cubs choose to rest most of their starters in the final series against the Reds. The umpires had to have the scorecard handy as the Cubs made many switches as Bryant, Baez Rizzo and Scwhwarber did not play after the 5th inning in any of the games. The Cubs would win the series 2-1 as they were able to get a win in the first two games while giving away the finale. In game 1 Colas got his last tuneup on the mound as he pitched 6.2 innings on 75 pitches and got the win in a 5-3 victory where Bryant homered in the 2nd. JD Martinez was able to get a rare start in left field and homered in the 4-3 win. Martinez has been a solid bench player but has likely said this season will be his last regardless of the outcome of the playoff. In Game #162 Micheal Kopech had a solid start but the Cubs gave it away in the 8th as Betance could not hold the lead in what would be a 4-6 loss.

                        2024 Regular Season Wrap Up
The Cubs once again were able to take the NL central division crown as well as winning over 100 games. In previous years it has been the offense that has driven Chicago but the club that lead MLB in home runs fell back to the pack this season. Instead, the pitching staff has been lights out as the Cubs have one of the best rotations in baseball to go along with best closer in Emmanuel Clase who took home NL reliever awards. The Cubs had two CY Young finalist but in the end Kyle Hendricks was able to take home the trophy as he lead baseball in wins with 20 and the NL in ERA. In other Cubs news Nico & Javy fell just short of gold gloves but Rizzo did get the nod as the NL’s best defensive catcher, just beating out Freddie Freeman from winning his 3rd a row.

The most surprising news down the stretch were the Yankees were able to take down the Rays in the final week of the season to win the AL East. New York was 4.5 games back of Tampa Bay with a week left in the season but were able to get hot to oust the Rays from the division title and the playoffs; this was all down without ace Gerrit Cole as he went down with a quad injury and may miss significant time in the postseason.

Pitcher - Reliever Freddy Mendoza: spent year in AAA except for a bout with the major league club. was 4th in Saves with 33 in 51 innings 2.09 ERA. Mendoza was the Chicago's minor league pitcher of the year last year when he lead AA in saves and seems poised for the full time call up.

Position Player: 1B Lew Cannon: had a solid season a year ago in AA but exploded this year as he hit .291 with 6 home runs before at AA Tennessee. he got the call up to AAA in May in part due to injury but never looked back as he went on to hit .307 and had 25 home runs for the Iowa Cubs. Chicago has been reluctant to rush their prospects if they cannot get full time at bats but the switch hitting first basemen may have a chance to make the 40 man roster and a place in the line up against lefties at 1st.

15 games left in my season and I’ve lost all interest because I want to play with Lindor on the Mets. Hopefully I can finish the season this weekend and recreate the trade

I know that feeling, I started my Padres franchise over once the Snell and Darvish deals went down.

Anyways, I'm sitting at 24-7 and in first place, about to begin a 3 game series vs LA who is right behind me at 21-9.

                            Snell (2-0, 2.91) vs Kershaw (3-0, 1.47)
                            Darvish (3-1, 2.88) vs Urias (3-1, 4.50)
                            Lamet (4-1, 1.93) vs Buehler (3-2, 5.40)

going to be a tough series. Lamet threw a perfect game his last time out vs STL.

Fernando Tatis is leading the way hitting .358 with 13 HR and 31 RBI.
Manny Machado is hitting for average but the power isn't there yet to start the year. He's hitting .314 with only 3 HR and 25 RBI.

Other key contributors are 1B Eric Hosmer (.322, 7 HR, 21 RBI), OF Tommy Pham (.313, 6 HR, 22 RBI) and Wil Myers (.290, 7 HR, 20 RBI).

Newly signed Ha-Seong Kim is struggling to find his timing so far hitting .253 with 4 HR and 10 RBI and a slash line of .339/.475/.814.

My pitching has been lights out so far as expected.

                            Snell 2-0, 2.91
                            Darvish 3-1, 2.88
                            Lamet 4-1, 1.93
                            Clevinger 4-0, 4.67
                            Paddack 5-0, 2.75

                              Cardinals land Fernando Tatis Jr

The Cardinals have reached out and made a splash this offseason acquiring the services of Fernando Tatis Jr.

The Cardinals signed Tatis to a 4 year $112M deal with a player option for the final year. The 29 year old Tatis came thru the Red Sox organization and was instrumental in their American League Championship season last year. The Cardinals outbid the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, and Indians to land the all-star shortstop.

Now the question becomes, what do the Cardinals do with Tatis, Samuel Franco (arbitration eligible) and Kolten Wong (signed 1 year deal)?

You could move Tatis or Franco to 2nd and move Wong to the bench, as I don't see the team trading him away. The Cardinals could keep Tatis at shortstop and trade away Samuel Franco who is 29 as well.

Its early this offseason so the Cardinals aren't forced to make any sudden moves and can see how things shake out over the next several weeks before deciding the direction they want to go.

One thing is for sure, this club is hungry to get back to the postseason after missing out last year, just one year removed from their 12th World Series Championship.

It will be interesting to see whom else they target this winter and how they fit Tatis into their lineup.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                                Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs and Dodgers Face Off in Game 1 of NLDS
After the win against the Brewers, the Dodgers would have a quick turn around as they would face off against the Cubs in Game 1 of the NLDS at Wrigley. The Cubs would have their Ace on the bump for game 1 as Kyle Hendricks would face off against Dustin May. Hendricks has had his share of post season struggles as he struggled a year ago and 2 years ago, he missed the last half of the championship run with a finger contusion. Hendricks looked to keep his Cy Young winning stride. After a quick top of the inning the Cubs were able to get on the board with their 2nd batter as Rizzo would go yard for a solo shot. The Cubs kept the hits coming as they made the lead 2- after a triple by Willson Contreras lead to another run when Kyle Schwarber shot a ball in the gap for an RBI. LA’s 1st basement Matt Beaty responded in the 2nd with a solo home run of his own.
The score would hold until the Cubs added more in the 4th when Javy Baez was able to get into 3rd safely on a triple. Oscar colas was able to get the RBI on a grounder to the 1st base side to make it 3-1. Kyle Hendricks would have an impressive start to the playoffs as he went 7 innings giving up only 4 hits and striking out 2 with the only run being Beaty’s homerun in the 2nd. The Cubs and Dodgers were locked into the 3-1 score until the 9th as Emmanuel Clase found himself in trouble. After getting 2 outs Clase walked Winkler led to a Gavin Lux liner that laced into centerfield. The Dodgers 3rd base coach had the stop sign on but Winkler went for the aggressive play as he tried to score from 1st. The move would prove to be too aggressive as Brennan Davis was able to field the ball cleanly and hit Chris Morel, who came in as a defensive replacement in the 7th inning, perfectly to cut down Winkler at the plate to end the game. Replay was inclusive but the Dodgers brass was upset after the game as they thought Winkler made it home safely; but the play would stand as the Cubs took game 1.

                                Game 2

In Game 2 Jacob DeGrom would face off against Clayton Kershaw. Most would predict that the game would be a pitching duel but both pitchers struggled as it took 106 pitches between the two to get the first 12 outs of the game. The difference maker was the Cubs ability to keep the hits isolated and held LA to 1 run while the Cubs were able to produce with 2 home runs between Kris Bryant and Jose Abreu in the 1st. The Cubs would end up scoring 6 runs through the first 2 innings as they led off the 2nd with a DeGrom walk at the plate, a Victor Reye single and a Bryant double in half of the inning.
DeGrom was able to settle down to finish 6 innings as he gave up 3 hits, 4 walks and 1 run with 7 strikeouts. The Cubs would put Betances in at the top of the 7th, but his stint would be short lived after allowing a walk he had a comebacker strike him in the face. Betances would fight through the dizziness to try to make the play at first but would end up leaving the game. Yovanny Cruz would come in for relief but would give up the two runners. The Cubs and Dodgers would trade runs as the Cubs would take game 2 7 to 4. Betances was placed in the concussion protocol after the game and will miss the rest of this series and likely not be available for the NLCS if the Cubs make it that far; the Cubs will go with rookie reliever Freddy Mendoza to take his spot.
                                Game 3

The Series traveled west to LA as Chicago looked to end the series early with a sweep. The Cubs chose Oscar Colas to start game 3 as LA would entrust Caleb Ferguson to keep their season alive. Ferguson started the year in the bullpen but was pressed to start after Brusdar Graterol went down for the year. The Dodgers were able to get off to a fast start this time as Kiebert Ruiz blasted a 2-run home run in the 2nd to give them the lead. The score would remain through most of the game as the Cubs scattered hits against Ferguson but could not put a rally together. Things changed as the Dodgers tried to push Ferguson one more inning with disastrous results. Ferguson was running on fumes and gave up a walk to Kyle Schwarber; Javy Baez would make them pay with a 2-run shot to tie the game up.
Colas would end up going 6 innings giving up 6 hits, 2 walks and striking out 8 but kept his team in the position to win as he left with no decision. In the 8th the Dodgers would take back the lead as Kyle Ryan would give up a double and a single to push the game to 3-2. Jose Alvarado got his first appearance to try and save the game for the Dodgers, but The Cubs were able to start the 9th with a double by Willson Contreras. With the count at 2-1 Alvarado was clearly not happy with the last call and took it out on Javy Baez as he brushed him back on high and inside fastball. Baez would respond as he took the next pitch 444 feet to left field to give the Cubs a 4-3 lead. Pedro Baez would come in and get Jose Abreu to ground out, but the Cubs would bring Kyle Schwarber in to pinch hit and proceeded to send the ball over the right field fence. Clase would come on and get 2 quick outs. The Dodgers were able to muster a hit but Clase was able to get the swinging strikeout to eliminate the Dodgers in the 5-3 win.

The Cubs will face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks after they were able to win their series against the Braves 3-1; in the AL the Yankees continued their hot streak as they swept the Twins. The Angels surpassed the Rangers. After losing the first two at home the Angels were able to win the final 3 against Texas including Shane Bieber getting the complete game shutout in game 5 as he struck out 11.
