Offense returns, Cardinals blast Blue Jays in mini-sweep

The Cardinals found their offense in this brief 2 game series with the Blue Jays to start the week in St.Louis.

The Cardinals only scored 4 runs in a 3 game series against the Pirates prior to the mini-series opener on Monday. The Cardinals scored 5 runs in the first inning of the series opener against the Blue Jays, in route to a 15-3 win over the Jays. But that was just an appetizer, as the Cardinals would bombard the Blue Jays 23-2 on Tuesday evening's series finale.

The Cardinals hit a combined 10 homeruns in the two games, including 3 grand slams (2 by McKay and one by Gorman) and struck out only a combined 5 times against Jays pitching in the series.

The pitching staff maintained their high level of execution as Kyle Funkhouser would strike out 17 hitters over 8 innings of work in the series finale. The Cards staff struck out 35 of the 54 outs in the series.

The Cardinals will look to pack their offense as they hit the road and travel to Pittsburgh for a 4 game weekend series against a Pirates club that has won 5 straight, which includes a sweep of the Cardinals just a week before.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

The Cubs trusted young 22 year old Jose Serrano on the mound in game 1, after throwing a Complete Game in the NLDS VS the Brewers. Serrano was as good as advertised, going 7IP, 9H, 6SO, 1ER.

The Cubs got on the board in the 1st with a solo HR from Juan Soto that was an absolute laser to the RF bleachers, the Cubs struck again In the 3rd with an RBI single from Tim Anderson.
The Giants cut the lead in half in their side of the 3rd with a Drew Jackson RBI single. This would be the only run given up by Serrano, as he cruised through 7.

The Cubs did not give up another run, and neither did the Giants, the game ended 2-1. The Cubs had 12 hits, but only 2 runs were needed and it was enough to give the Cubs a 1-0 advantage in the NLCS.

      Game 2: Jose Berrios (12-16, 3.66) VS Logan Webb (8-14, 4.71)

Game 2 was a wild one. Berrios was on the mound for the Cubs. Berrios has struggled to this point in the postseason, having logged only 10IP in 2 starts with a 7+ ERA.
Berrios got off to a hot start in this one, giving up his first run in the 4th off a double by young stud catcher Harvey Sanchez. This tied the game at 1, as the Cubs scored a run in the top half of the inning thanks to a Javy Baez sac fly that scored Henry Browning.

The Cubs added two more runs in the 6th with back to back home runs courtesy of Juan Soto and Miguel Sano. This gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead, and Berrios took that lead into the 8th.

The Cubs went to the pen in the 8th, and it blew up horribly. The Giants put together a slew of hits, and the go ahead runs were driven in by former Cubs legend Kris Bryant, the Giants put up a 4 spot, and took a 5-3 lead after 8.

The Cubs were stunned, and could not rally in the 9th and lost the game 5-3, and this tied the series up 1-1. It was a game that slipped through the Cubs hands, despite them only obtaining 5 hits, they were in position to win late and squandered it.
      Series heads to Wrigley. 1-1.

      Game 3: Brailyn Marquez (14-10, 4.21) VS Tarik Stubal (13-6, 3.43)

Cubs got out of the gates running in this one scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning via a Juan Soto RBI and Sano RBI. The Cubs were able to score 2 more runs in the 4th with a 2 run homer from Javier Baez to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.

Brailyn Marquez was pitching an absolute gem in this game, and did not give up a run until the 7th inning, unfortunately it blew up for him and he gave up 4 runs in the inning and the game was suddenly tied. Another comeback for the Giants.
Most of the runs came from a pinch hit 3rHR from Tromp.

The Cubs were immediately able to gain the lead back in the bottom half of the 8th with a Tim Anderson RBI double, and a Henry Browning RBI double, Cubs lead 6-4 and Clyde Booker closed out the 9th inning for a win, and a 2-1 series lead for the Cubs.

      Game 4: Julio Urias (13-8, 3.99ERA) VS Joe Musgrove (7-11, 3.22ERA)

The Cubs yet again struck early in the 1st when Tim Anderson doubled to lead off the game, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Cubs scored 2 more runs in the 3rd thanks to a 2 Run Homer from Henry Browning to make the score 3-0 after 3.

Urias was cruising in this one, and did not give up a run until the 6th when OF Mallex Smith hit a 2 run homer that scored Kris Bryant and cut the score to 3-2 Cubs. Urias overall was phenomenal, going 7IP, 2ER, 10K’s and this continues his absolute dominance so far in the postseason.

The Cubs answered back in the bottom half with Henry Browning now scoring on a wild pitch.

The 7th inning saw Tim Anderson drive in Kyle Schwarber on a single and give the Cubs a 5-2 lead. The lead held, as Clyde Booker notched a save despite giving up another HR to Mallex Smith.
Cubs lead 3-1, and are 1 win away from another World Series appearance.

      Game 5: Jacob DeGrom (13-11, 4.07ERA) Vs Nate Pearson (10-10, 3.63)

The Cubs opted to go with Jacob DeGrom in game 5 with a 3-1 series lead. DeGrom has yet to make an appearance for the Cubs this postseason. The 37 year old, gave up a run in the 1st thanks to a Mallex Smith RBI single, and this gave the Giants an early lead. It did not last long as Juan Soto hit his 5th HR of the postseason to tie the game at 1, after 1.

The Cubs added another in the 2nd with a Mario Dorta double that scored Henry Browning. This gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead that would last until the 4th. DeGrom fell apart and gave up 3 runs in the inning with a 2 run Homer by Trey Mancini and an Eddie Rosario solo hr to give the Giants a 4-2 lead.
The Cubs added 2 of their own in the bottom of the 4th with a 2 run homer by Kyle Schwarber to tie the game at 4. The Cubs added more in the 5th putting up 3 runs on a Henry Browning solo HR, and a Dorta 2 RBI double to give the Cubs a commanding 7-4 lead after 5.

The Giants added another with a solo HR from young stud catcher Harvey Sanchez, which made the score 7-5. All was quiet until the 9th when All-star Closer Clyde Booker came in to shut down and eliminate the Giants. This did not happen. Booker imploded and gave up 3 runs and the lead after Kris Bryant had a bases clearing double that gave the Giants an 8-7 lead in the 9th.

The Cubs did not give up, and they were able to tie up the game with a sac fly by Javier Baez which scored Anthony Williams who substituted for catcher Kyle Schwarber. Cubs avoid another collapse, and head to extras.

The Cubs bullpen cruised through the 10th, and Alan Quick led off the bottom half of the 10th with a walk. This was followed by a double for Tim Anderson, which put the Cubs in prime position to win. 0 outs, runners at 2nd and 3rd with Juan Soto coming up. He is obviously walked to load the bases, and Anthony Williams delivered a hard enough hit grounder that the Cubs walked away with the win. A series clincher and an NL pennant. The Cubs have returned to the World Series again!

Cubs win 9-8, Win Series 4-1. Advance to World Series.
      World Series: Cubs VS Twins

      Game 1: Jose Berrios (3GS, 17.1IP, 0-1, 5.19ERA) VS Cedrick Holland (4GS, 27.1IP, 1-1, 2.63ERA)

The Cubs came out with the bats swinging in game 1. Cedrick Holland had been great for the Twins in the postseason thus far, but that all fell apart in the 1st game of the World Series when the Cubs quickly put up a 2 spot in the 1st inning with a Juan Soto RBI single, and a Gary Scruggs sac fly.

The Cubs added another in inning 2 when Alan Quick added a sac fly of his own scoring Kyle Schwarber to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead after 2. That lead would extend further when the Cubs put together a massive 4 spot in inning 3 and pushing Holland out of the game thanks to another Juan Soto solo HR, and Alan Quick hit a bases clearing double to make the game 7-0.

The Twins finally got on the board in the 5th with a solo hr from 3B Matt Chapman, and that was all for Jose Berrios who was taken out early with only 60 pitches in hopes he can come back earlier in the series than anticipated.

The Cubs bullpen scurried a bit, and the Twins did get the game to 7-5, but it was never really close as the Cubs held on and won in dominating fashion.
Cubs win 7-5, and take a 1-0 series lead.

      Game 2: Julio Urias (3GS, 19.2IP, 1-0, 1.83ERA) VS Jaime Barria (3GS, 18IP, 3-0, 0.50ERA)

The Cubs again got the bats going early again in this one with a Juan Soto 2R HR in the 1st inning, that is his 7th HR of the postseason. The Twins made sure to answer the Cubs with 2 runs in the 2nd courtesy of back to back doubles by 3B Matt Chapman and Ronald Guzman who ended the game 3-4 with 2 2B and 2RBI.

Julio Urias was able to go through 6 innings, giving up only 1 more run in the 4th with one of the Guzman doubles. Urias has been stable in the postseason, and continues that with another solid performance on the bump going 6IP, 3ER, 2K’s. While the Twins Jaime Barria who has been outstanding this postseason gave up 5ER in 3.2IP and 9hits. 2 of those runs came in the 3rd when Juan Soto tripled which scored Tim Anderson, and Baez drove him home with a single.

They Cubs kept the train going all game long, scoring 8 runs off 15 hits, and the Twins were stuck at 4 runs through 11 hits. The Cubs win game 2 and have an early 2-0 series lead on the road. The series heads to Wrigley.

      Game 3: Jose Serrano (2GS, 16IP, 2-0, 1.13ERA) VS Randy Dobnak (2GS, 10.2IP, 0-1, 3.38ERA)

The Cubs train keeps rolling. They have continued to dominate the World Series and are now 1 win away from a 3rd World Series since 2021. The Cubs had young 22 year old Jose Serrano on the mound and he delivered yet again this postseason. He is now 3-0, 2.05ERA in 3 starts. The young phenom is proving his worth in the playoff rotation.

The Cubs YET again scored runs in the 1st with another HR from Soto, a 2 run shot that is now Soto’s 8th HR of the postseason as he continues to lead the offense.. The Cubs jumped to a 5-0 lead after 3 when in the 3rd when Cubs 3B Miguel Sano roped a 3R HR that gave the Cubs a big lead, and they held it the rest of the game.

The Cubs have a chance now to win the series at Wrigley and would take a monumental comeback to stop this underdog Cubs team from winning another World Series.

      Game 4: Jose Berrios (3GS, 17.1IP, 0-1, 5.19ERA) VS Cedrick Holland (4GS, 27.1IP, 1-1, 2.63ERA)

A rematch of game 1 was on tap for this game, and it was a much different type of game than it was the 1st time around, as both pitchers threw really good games this time.

The first run of the game came from former Cub Ian Happ who scored off a fielders choice ground ball to give the Twins an early 1-0 lead. Holland was terrific in this start, and did not give up a run through 7 innings. Holland entered the 8th with the same 1-0 lead and did finally give up a run that tied the game up late thanks to a Kyle Schwarber solo HR that tied it going into the 9th.

Cubs RP Ray Del Villar who had yet to give up a run in 9IP so far in the postseason was hit up bad in the 9th, giving up his first 2 runs of the postseason and again letting the Twins takeover the lead late in the game. These runs again came courtesy of Ian Happ who hit a 2R HR, and was only a single away from the cycle.

The Cubs were down to their last outs in the bottom of the 9th, Cubs fans were hoping to see a World Series clincher at Wrigley, and the crowd was not giving up on their team. With 2 outs, and 1 on Cubs slugger Miguel Sano came to the plate and crushed an opposite field blast to the bleachers, igniting the crowd in craziness and tying up the game sending this World Series game to extras. A place the Cubs have been before in a world series.
Clyde Booker pitched a clean 10th for the Cubs, and it was the Cubs turn for possible history.

Kyle Schwarber steps up to the plate, 1 out and nobody on. 5th pitch of the AB he yet AGAIN crushed a ball to DEEP right field and the baseball world has yet again crowned the Cubs as the World Series champion. This moment could not have been anymore poetic, as Kyle Schwarber is one of 2 members (Baez) still left over from the 2016 season. Schwarber who had a horrid regular season and is on the last year of his contract, it has been well known that this is likely his last year in Chicago. What a way to end a legendary fan favorite career.

Cubs win 4-3, and win the world series with a sweep of the Twins 4-0.

      CUBS WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!

        Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2022-23

        Off Season

Shortly after the World Series, Justin Verlander and Howie Kendricks decided to go out as champions as they both retired. Possibly due to the stain of playing for Houston during the scandal, Verlander did not get the hall of fame nod. MIguel Cabrera was the other notable player to retire and did make the HOF; as he was able to blast 533 home runs in a 20 year career.

The Cubs has their core locked up but did have several decisions to make with players retiring and up for free agency. The Cubs declined the options for Miller, Kimbrel and Gordon and chose not to pursue them. With a solid core already in place the Cubs were not active in free agency as they made minor moves. The Cubs signed Victor Reyes to a 2 year deal with a player option. Reyes was with the Yankees last year but missed all but 3 games with an ACL injury. The Cubs plan to give Reyes a shot to play center field and platoon with Brennan Davis. The Cubs also made a move to resign Ben Revere though he will have to battle Reyes to make the club. Justin Turner’s club option was declined but the infield was not ready to retire and agreed to a one year deal. The Cubs also signed Felix Hernandez- Hernandez did not see time in the majors last year as the Braves went with younger arms and refused to trade the veteran to a playoff contender. Herandez posted an ERA over 5 when he saw action in 2021. Herandez has no guarantee to make the roster but will be expected to push the young arms vying to make the show. The Cubs final move of the off season was to take a flyer on 32 year old Danny Santana. Santana is a utility player with some pop in his bat but will have to battle to make the club. The Cubs choose not to be players for any bigger names as their budget sits at 218 million, just below the luxury tax threshold

Elsewhere in the league, the Yankees shook things up as they had several players they let walk. New York has failed to overcome the Red Sox and upstart Rays and have missed the playoffs the last 2 years. While they did end up signing Luis Severino, the Bronx Bombers ended up letting Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez walk.

The offseason saw several big names on the move. Within the center the Reds and Pirates improved on paper as Cincinnati signed Andrew Benintendi. Pittsburgh were able to retain Josh Bell and also signed SS Trea Turner away from the Nats. Not to be outdone the Nationals signed Gary Sanchez and also picked up first basemen Miguel Sano;Paul Goldschmit had previously manned 1st for Washington but moved on to the White Soxs.

Boston will arguably have the best rotation in baseball as they signed Jose Berrios away from the Twins on a 6 year deal. The Red Sox also signed Mike Clevinger on a 2 year deal. The rotation will now feature 3 Aces as they still have Chris Sale.

        Notable Losses:
        Dee Gorden (Pirates)
        Craig Kimbrel (Braves)
        Andrew Miller (Twins)
        Justin Verlander (retirement)
        Howie Kendrick (retirement)

        Notable Signings
        Victor Reyes
        Ben Revere (resign)
        Danny Santana
        Justin Turner (resign)
        Felix Hernandez

        Signings Around the League
        Joey Gallo (Braves)
        Gary Sanchez (Nats)
        Miguel Sano (Nats)
        Trea Turner (Pirates)
        Aaron Judge (Rangers)
        Jose Berrios (Red Soxs)
        Mike Clievinger ( Red Sox)
George Springer (Traded to Rays for Joc Pederson and a minor leaguer)

        Spring Training

Baseball was back in action in Arizona and Florida as Spring Training for the 2023 season began. Several spots for the 26 man roster were up for grabs for the North Siders. Brennan Davis will get a shot to stick in the majors as the front office like his glove and speed on the roster. The front office will again platoon in center as Davis will play with the winner of the battle between Reyes and Revere. While Revere had a solid spring he did not make the big club as Reyes offers more of a bat.

Richard Kell the 2nd/3rd basemen was able to show his bat was worthy to keep in the majors after he was a call up in september last year.

As spring training ended the Cubs rotation settled into place; The Cubs will carry 7 starting pitchers to start the season. Colas, Hendricks Darvish, Puk and Brailyn Marquez got the top starting nods. Adonis Medina, the minor leagued acquired from the Phills when Alex Wood was traded mid season, was not able to show enough results to make the club and will start the year in Triple A. Oscar De La Cruz will start the year in the pen along with veteran righty Felix Hernandez. King Felix will look to resurrect his career after not pitching in the majors last year. The Cubs hope the 35 year old will be able to provide similar results at Justin Verlander a year ago.

With Miller and Kimbrel gone there were holes in the bullpen. Ryan, Wick, Edwards Jr, Clause and Yovanny Cruz return from a year ago and youngster Andrew Chacin will get another attempt to stick in the league. The 23 year old made the show last year but did not get off to a good start as he had a ERA over 6 heading into June. When Miller returned from a stint in the IL he was optioned down in favor of Cruz who had an impressive first year. Without Kimbrel who manned the closer role for the last 3 years there was an open competition for the spot in spring training between Ryan, Wick Edwards and Clause. Clause came by way of Cleveland in the Caratini Trade and pitched well in the 2nd half. He had a dominant spring and won the job; Wick and Ryan were runner ups and could take over if the flame thrower faults early in the season.

          TRUE TO THE BLUE

          2020 Seattle Mariners (29-41)

Around the League Friday, June 5th, 2020
Two months into the 2020 season, Yasiel Puig has found a home, signing a two-year, $11M contract with the Oakland A’s. The A’s are 32-32, tied with the Angels for third place in the AL West, and twelve games behind the first place Houston Astros (44-20). They are three games back from the second AL Wild Card spot. By signing Puig, the A’s hope to better their chances at overtaking the three teams ahead of them in the Wild Card race: Texas (34-31), Boston (35-31), and Kansas City (35-30). Puig will likely make his debut for the A’s when they return to the Coliseum on the 15th for consecutive series against divisional opponents, the Angels and the Astros.

Mariners Bats Hot, Bullpen Not Friday, June 12th, 2020
In their first three series in June, the Mariners went 4-5. The M’s were swept in three games at home by the Yankees to start the month, won two of three in Miami, and then won two of three in Toronto.

They have scored five or more runs in all but one game since Wednesday, June 3rd. In the series at Miami, right fielder and All-Star hopeful Mitch Haniger batted .571 with a 2B, 3 HR, and 7 RBI, third baseman Kyle Seager batted .357 with two 2B and a solo HR, left fielder Kyle Lewis batted .400 with two 2B, a 3B, and 6 RBI, and rookie first baseman Evan White batted .416 with a 2B and a RBI. Against the Blue Jays, Seager batted .333 with two 2B and 4 RBI, shortstop J.P. Crawford batted .545 with two 2B and an RBI, and White batted .333 with a 2B and 4 RBI.

In four of the M’s five losses this month, the deciding runs were scored in the 9th inning or later. Against the Yankees, they lost the first game in the 10th inning and lost the following game after allowing four runs in the 9th. In their only loss in Miami, they allowed the Marlins to tie it in the bottom of the 9th and walk it off in the 11th. Opening the series in Toronto, the Blue Jays were allowed to score four in the bottom of the 9th to walk it off.

Converting saves has been an issue for the Mariners all season. The Seattle bullpen has converted just 15 of their 24 save opportunities and, without a bona fide closer, six different relievers have earned a blown save for the M’s. While closer is not the most important role for a team that finds themselves in last place in their division, it is essential for competitive teams that wish to reach the postseason, which the Mariners have not done since 2001. The Mariners front office realizes this, and as they hope to open their competitive window in 2021, they are rumored to be checking in on some controllable relievers that can pitch successfully in the later innings.

            We swept the Royals...

We took care of business in our 2 day stay in Kansas City.

            Game 1: Both team SP: Braves(Newcomb) K.C.(Duffy) pitched great. Hurling 7.1IP,0R & 0ER each.
The game went into the late night. We squeezed out a 1-0 win! RP Claudio step up big time going 2.1IP & 1H in relief & CP Kimbrel preserved the win for his 47th save.

Game 2: SP Fried dominated the Royals line up. He pitched into the 8th inning, giving up 6H,0ER & 7K. Cruising to his 20th victory on the year. We won 5-0.

We are now 87-72 on the year. Headed to New York to take on the NL East champs(Mets) for the last 3 game series of the year. Facing DeGrom & Thor. Up 1.0 gm on the Cards & Reds for the no.2 W.C. seeds & 1.0GB of the top seeded Nats. They have lost 3 gms in a row. Will take on the AL Central champs(Indians). The home WC game is still a possiblity.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

              This time, it's for real.

              2020 Franchise Mode

              Team: Toronto Blue Jays

Difficulty/Settings: All-Star (no slider adjustments aside from FB pitch speed 7, off-speed 6), Directional hitting, Classic hitting, Auto field/Manual throw

Using Ridin's Full Minors v2.5 roster

Did a random choice for teams and the Blue Jays popped up. I was excited because I've been somewhat of a Blue Jays fan for a long time. Roberto Alomar was my favorite player growing up (I tried hard to be as good of a second baseman as him, but yeah, came up well short) and rank their logo/uniform combos right at or near the top of MLB (I own a couple of hats, including their new alternate).

This team is young with a lot of potential. I'm excited to see who develops into All-Stars and how I can build around those players.

I'm also going a different route and starting in Spring Training so I can get a sense of the team, try out various lineup options and see if any of the minor league guys can earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Baseball's almost back and so am I. Let's go!

If you were swayed by the uniforms you should like playing with Ridins 2.5. It was somewhat unheralded but the team did a lot of work on the gear this year. It’s a good looking Roster! Best of luck with the Franchise.

Cardinals and Angels agree to first blockbuster trade of 2026

The Cardinals and Angels have struck a deal that will be the first blockbuster trade of the 2026 season, and its going to occur on June 10th.

The two teams agreed to a deal that will send 2B Yoan Moncada from the Halos to the Cardinals in exchange for Dylan Carlson and prospects.

                    Cardinals get:

                    2B - Yoan Moncada

                    Angels get:

                    OF - Dylan Carlson
                    1B - Luken Baker
                    SP - Jacob Nix

In Moncada, the Cardinals are getting one of the best hitters in the game today and a 30 year old who actually is under contract thru next season. Moncada is currently hitting .323 with 7 homeruns and 23 RBI's. He will replace Kolten Wong as the everyday 2nd baseman in the lineup and likely hit 5th in the order.

The Cardinals have been doing their best to wait for Wong to turn his season around, but the 35 year old is hitting just .165 on the year and is striking out at a 3 to 1 clip, which is by far the worst of his career.

The Angels will get Dylan Carlson who will take over as their everyday left fielder. Carlson started out as the Cardinals everyday right fielder, but was replaced at the end of May with Eddie Ortiz. The Angels are also getting Luken Baker who will serve either as their everyday first baseman or DH. Baker is a top 15 prospect in baseball. Starting pitcher Jacob Nix is a Top 50 prospect as well and has been dominant at Springfield, the Cards AA affiliate. Nix is 3-0 with a sub 1 ERA in just 5 starts. He started at Memphis where he compiled a 1-3 record with a 3.85 ERA but was demoted when the Cardinals got healthy.

This deal is a positive for both clubs. The Angels get prospects who are major league ready and join a core on youngsters who should make the Halos competitive sooner rather than later. The Cardinals get a second baseman for this year and next, as they look to either develop talent within the organization to take over this position or sign Moncada to a long term deal.

The only downside is what becomes of Kolten Wong. For now, Wong will move to the bench and Tommy Edman will be optioned to Memphis for make room on the active roster. But its not out of the realm of possibility that the Cardinals look to move Wong for a prospect or fringe prospects to re-tool their minor league systems.

                        The Amazins

Mets go 4-2 on Road Trip
                        April 24, 2020

The Mets (19-9) lost the series finale to the Reds (11-17) by a score of 3-5, but were able to come away with a winning record on their quick six game road trip to Atlanta and Cincinnati.

Dakota Chalmers continues to impress in his first full season as a starter. In game 1 of the Reds series, he went 7.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 4K, 1 BB in an 8-2 Mets win, bringing his ERA down to 2.05 so far this season. The Mets had high hopes for him coming into the season, but thus far he has exceeded their expectations. His fastball sits 95, and he has a changeup and two breaking balls he can throw as complements. It's still early, and it remains to be seen if he can keep this up over the course of a full major league season.

Also, Amir Garrett was able to improve his record to 6-0 in a 10-7 win in game 2 against the Reds, his old team. While his ERA is a bit higher than the Mets would like (4.25), he's been backed by a high-powered offense whenever he takes the mound.

The Mets will have tomorrow off before returning home to face the last place Braves (9-19) at Citi Field.

Closing in on the end of the regular season and the Red Sox have a 2 game lead on the Yankees with 6 games remaining

                          Game #156 of Season

Boston Red Sox (100-55) @ Tampa Bay Rays (80-74)
Pitching Matchup - Martin Perez vs Ryan Yarbrough

The Rays would open the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Mike Zunino and Michael Brosseau hit back to back doubles to give Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 through 4 innings and the Red Sox would threaten in the top of the 5th as they had runners at the corners with 1 out for Benintendi who would drive in Verdugo with a sac fly to CF to tie the game 1-1. Yarbrough would leave a pitch up in the zone to Rafael Devers who drove it over the wall in RF for a 2-run HR and Boston would a take a 3-1 lead. Perez would retire the side in order in the bottom of the 5th pickup up 2 more strikeouts to bring his total to 8 Ks and send the game to the 6th inning with Boston leading 3-1. The Red Sox would put a pair of runners on with 2 outs in the top of the 6th and Anthony Banda would come on to replace Yarbrough and got Kevin Pillar to fly out to end the threat and keep it a 3-1 game. Perez pitched a scoreless bottom of the 6th picking up two more strikeouts to bring his total to 10 Ks and we the game would move to the 7th inning with the Red Sox leading 3-1. Brandon Lowe doubled to lead off the bottom of the 7th and Perez was forced to leave with back stiffness. Darwinzon Hernandez entered the game and struck out Cozens for the 1st out. Mike Zunino would hit a towering fly ball deep to LF but Benintendi would get back and make the catch with his back against the wall for the 2nd out. Michael Brosseau would rip a rocket past the dive of Devers at 3rd base into LF for a single with 2 outs and Lowe would try to score from second base but Benintendi would come up firing to Devers who turned and fired a perfect relay throw to the plate where Vazquez would get the tag on the sliding Lowe for the final out on a bang bang play to end the 7th inning and send the game to the 8th inning with Boston leading 3-1. Banda would retire the side in order in the top of the 8th and Ryan Brasier would come on and retire the Rarys in order in the bottom of the 8th and the game would head to the 9th inning with Boston leading 3-1. Dylan Cozens made a spectacular diving catch to rob Alex Verdugo of extra bases and Banda had retired 9 straight before Kevin Pillar singled with 2 outs in the top of the 9th. Jose Peraza and Andrew Benintendi each drew walks and suddenly the Red Sox had the bases loaded with 2 outs for Rafael Devers. Banda stayed in the game for the lefty on lefty matchup and Devers would deliver a line drive into CF for a RBI single that scored two big insurance runs to extend the Red Sox lead to 5-1. Diego Castillo would get Bogaerts to fly out to end the top of the 9th and the Rays would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th trailing 5-1 with Brandon Workman coming on to pitch for Boston. Hunter Renfroe would draw a lead off walk to begin the bottom of the 9th for the Rays and Tsutsugo would fly out to Pillar in CF for the first out. Brandon Lowe would bounce into a fielders choice and the Rays were down to their final out. Dylan Cozens singled into LF to keep the game alive and bring up Mike Zunino with two men on and two outs. Mike Zunino would rip a RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 5-2 and bring the tying run to the plate in Michael Brosseau. Workman was scuffling and Brosseau would bloop a single into CF scoring another run to make it 5-3 and bring Kevin Kiermaier to the plate with two on and two outs. Kiermaier would get into a 3-1 count and get a good pitch to hit but would pop it up and Devers made the catch for the final out as Workman hangs on and the Red Sox win their final road game of the regular season 5-3

                          * The Red Sox were leading 3-1 heading into the 9th inning where Rafael Devers drove in a pair with a RBI single to make it a 5-1 game. Brandon Workman almost blew it in the bottom of the 9th as the Rays cut the deficit to 5-3 and brought the winning run to the plate but Kevin Kiermaier would pop up to end the game and the Red Sox hold on for a 5-3 win

                          * The Red Sox improve to 101-55 and now have a 2 game lead over the Yankees who lost to Toronto and then beat Houston. The Rays fall to 80-75 with the loss

                          * Martin Perez continues to pitch well down the stretch and earns his 10th win of the season as he throws 6 strong innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits with 10 Ks to improve to 10-7 with a 4.75 ERA. Perez has been outstanding over the last month and a half as he earned just his 4th win on August 12th to run his record to 4-6 with an ERA of 5.40 and now finds himself at 10-7 with a 4.75 ERA on September 20th and entrenched as the Red Sox #4 starter heading into the post season

                          * Ryan Yarbrough pitched 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits with 1 walk and 3 Ks taking the loss to fall to 7-8 with a 3.56 ERA on the season

                          * Rafael Devers had a big night for Boston going 2 for 5 with a HR & 4 RBI. Devers is now hitting 263 with 32 HR & 107 RBI on the season

                          * Michael Brosseau went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for Tampa Bay

                          * Brandon Workman continues to have a shaky second half as he allowed 2 runs and almost blew the game in the bottom of the 9th. The Red Sox have one week to try and get him straightened out and build a little confidence or else they're going to head into the post season with a major question mark in the closer role

                          * The Red Sox wrap up their road schedule for the regular season and will head home for the final week of regular season with just 6 games remaining as they try to wrap up the AL East with their magic number sitting at 5. The Red Sox will next face the Toronto Blue Jays for 3 games at Fenway Park with Nathan Eovaldi scheduled to face Tanner Roark in the opener.

                          * The Red Sox magic number to clinch the AL East is 5

Cardinals sweep Pirates - win streak at 6 straight

The Cardinals (41-25) swept the Pirates in a 4 game series at PNC Park to extend their winning streak to 6 straight games.

The Cardinals offense continued to be hot except for Saturday's game, as they scored 27 runs over the 4 games, with 25 being scored in 3 games combined. On Saturday, Yoan Moncada's team debut, the Cardinals only pushed across 2 runs, although they hit the ball well, just kept hitting it right at people.

The pitching was strong again as Josh Rogers, Michael Wacha, Junior Fernandez, and Kyle Funkhouser all collected wins while pitching at least 6 innings each. The bullpen did not give up a run the entire series.

The Cardinals will now travel to New York to face the Mets in a 3 game series starting Monday night. The Cardinals have a weird week as they play Monday thru Wednesday against the Mets, then get Thursday and Friday off before facing the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday.

                            June Schedule:

                            3 @ NYM
                            2 vs CHC
                            3 vs COL
                            3 vs CIN
                            4 @ MIA
                            3 @ BOS

Yoan Moncada stars in first 2 games with the Cardinals

It didn't take Yoan Moncada long to make an impact for his new team. After popping out on the first pitch he saw as a Cardinal, Moncada would not make an out the rest of his at-bats going 4 for 5 with 4 walks, a grand slam, a double, and 5 RBI's in his first two games with the Cardinals. Moncada also flashed the leather making 3 outstanding plays, 2 of those with 2 outs and saving a run in Sunday's series finale.

Moncada will look to keep up this level of production as the Cardinals head to New York to face the Mets.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                              Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Cubs Open ‘23 Campaign in Baltimore

The champs are set for opening day as they will face off against the Orioles in Baltimore. The Cubs got off to a hot start as they scored in each of the first 5 innings. Willson Contreras had himself a day as he hit 3 home runs to start off the year in a 13-6 rout. Baltimore aided the cubs along the way as they looked like they could use another week of spring training as they had 4 errors on the day. Baltimore has been the worst team in baseball, while they are starting to build a solid core of young players they have not had any 1st basemen pan out and are going with CF Austin Hays and 2nd year catcher Chu-Ji Lin at 1st. Hays struggled as he had 3 of the 4 errors on the day.

In Game 2 the Cubs won again 6-1 behind Kyle Hendrick who looked in mid season form. Willson Contreras also continued to be hot as he belted 2 more home runs to make it 5 on the year.

The Cubs were able to complete the 3 game sweep as they won 4-2. AJ Puk struggled but the bullpen held strong as Chicago got the W. The Cubs will be on the road again as they face off against the undefeated Brewers for 3 games before returning home to face a Pirate team that looks to contend in the Central after picking up Trea Turner in the offseason.

Central Foes Face Off in Milwaukee

If the Brewers are to contend in the Central they will need to get off to a better start than last year, they found themselves in the bottom half of the division until June when they got hot but they did not win enough to overcome the 90 win NL West teams. Darvish took the mound in game one and was lights out as he allowed 4 hits in a complete game shutout as the Cubs drubbed the Brewers 7-0.
The Cubs could not keep the hot bats going in game 2 and 3 as they only produced a run by way of a Kris Bryant solo shot as they lost 3-1. In the rubber match, Felix Hernandez took the mound in a major league game for the first time in a year. He struggled early as he gave up 2 runs in the first but was able to regain form in innings 2,3 and 4. The wheels fell in 5th with 1 out as he gave up 4 runs to make the score 6-0. The Cubs didn’t get on the board until the 7 when they got 2 runs in. In the 9th Chicago was able to score after 2 doubles by Bryant and Rizzo but Milwaukee brought in their closer Hader who proceeded to shut the door. The Cubs sit at 4-2 and will head back home for a 7 game homestand as they will face the Pirates in a 3 game series before they meet up with the Brewers again for a 4 game series.

Cubs Home Opener does not go as planned for World Champs

The Cubs were all smiles before the game as the Commissioner was on hand for the World Series Ring Ceremony. Dee Gordon, who moved on from the Cubs was on hand as well albeit in the opposite dugout as he is now a member of the Pirates. The fans at Wrigley got to see both teams put on a hitting clinic as the two squads would combine for 27 hits on the day. Unfortunately for Chicago fans Pittsburgh would do more with their hits as they got to Hendricks in the 4 as he imploded giving up 4 runs. Andre Chacin came in and could no better as he gave up 5 runs before the Cubs knew what hit them and could get another reliever in. The Cubs were able to crawl back but it was too little too late as the pirates spoiled the party winning 10-6.

In Game 2 AJ Puk got the Cubs back on the winning side of things as he struck out 4 and gave up 5 in a game where he would go all the way earning a shutout as the Cubs won 4-0.

In the final game of the series the Cubs opened up the game as the first 6 men would get on base as the Cubs scored 8 runs in the first including home runs by Justin Turner and a grand slam by Bryant as the Cubs batted around. Pittsburgh Lefty Brandon Waddell day ended way earlier than the Pirates had hoped for as he would not make it out of the inning; getting only 2 outs before Pittsburgh looked to their bullpen. The Cubs would go on to wallop the Pirates 14-0 to win the series 2-1.

Brew Crew come to Wrigley for I-94 Showdown

The Cubs and Brewers faced off again, this time in Chicago for a 4 game series. The Brewers bested the Cubs just a few days ago in Milwaukee and the Cubs looked to get Revenge in game 1. The Cubs struck first as Rizzo was able to score Kris Bryant but after this Dylan File had complete control of the Cubs lineup. File has gotten the best of the Cubs in the young season; in two starts against Chicago he has pitched 14 innings and given up 2 runs. Darvish was on the mound for the Cubs and pitched well but got into trouble in 4th. With The Cubs up 1 Darvish had the bases loaded with 2 outs. He was able to get Yelich to hit a dribbler to the mound but Darvish toss to first sailed over Rizzo’s head and 2 scored on the error. In the end this was the deciding play of the game as each team was hold at bay and the Brewers again beat the Cubs, this time by the score 2-1

In Game 2 The Cubs were able to use the strong start of Brailyn Marquez to get the better of Milwaukee. The young lefty went 7 innings with 8 K’s while giving up 3 hits and a run. Schwarber and Bryant homered in the 5-1 win.

In Game 3, Hendricks was back to form as he gave up 1 run in 7 innings of work while he struck out 7. The Cubs and Brewers were tied at 1 until the 8th inning when Cruz gave up 2 runs to make it 3-1. Willson Contreras started the 9th with a home run but Hader was on point as he retired the side as the Brewers won again and went up in the series 2-1.

In the final game Oscar De La Cruz got his first career start. He had seen action in the previous series with the Brewers when he relieved Felix Hernandez; Oscar was able to pitch 3 scoreless innings and looked for similar results in his first start. While the Brewers were able to get on the board with a solo home run but could not spoil De La Cruz’ day as he went 6 innings and only gave up 2 hits. Kris Bryant was able to put the Cubs ahead with a 2 run home run as the Cubs salvaged a split in the series winning game 4 3-1.

The Cubs will get their frequent flyer miles as they will head to New York to face the Yankee’s for a 3 game series before having to travel across the country for 3 against the Dodgers and Giants before returning home to face a St Louis team that is 2-10 in the early season.

Braves Outlast Mets, Win 2-1 in 16 Innings
                                April 27, 2024

In a game that ended well after midnight, the Braves mercifully sent a dejected Citi Field crowd home with a Carlos Correa solo shot off Julio Alvarez in the top of the 16th. The Mets used seven different relievers in the marathon game, combing for 10 IP, 7 H, 11K, 2 BB. You can't ask much more out of your bullpen, and you'd like to think that the offense would have provided some run support at some point, but it was not the case. Julio Alvarez, who has struggled to a 6+ ERA this season, was the victim of a Carlos Correa bomb to put the Braves up for good.

Correa went 5-6 with a walk and the game-winning HR.

Mets starter, Dave Monahan, was stellar as well, giving up 3 hits and 1 ER over 6 innings.

Unfortunately, the Mets offense sputtered all night, especially Michael Conforto. The former MVP was hitless in 6 AB with a walk. It's going to be tough to win when your #3 hitter isn't producing and their #3 hitter is going 5-6.

The Mets (19-11), now losers of three straight, face the Braves in the series finale tomorrow before the Cubs come to town.

RHP Nick Burdi Headed to the IL

Closer Nick Burdi left the game after 1.1 IP with a sprained elbow and will be headed to the IL. He recently missed a couple of games after he slipped and fell in the dugout, but was able to avoid a trip to the IL. Now the Mets will be without their closer for the next two weeks, and will be hopeful that LHP Dan Shoemaker can fill the role.

RHP Louis Elias has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.
