Game 1 of the NLCS was a topsy-turvy one. The Kekambas started hot, scoring three in the 1st. It seemed like they'd run away with this behind their rookie starter, Curtis Davis. He cruised through four but imploded in the 5th, giving up five runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Alfonso Rosado crushed a two-run homer to tie it up. The Gamblers went up three when Rex West, who has struggled all postseason, demolished a three-run bomb. New Jersey tied it right back in the bottom half. Finally, in the bottom of the 9th, Joseph Buscher hit an RBI single to walk off with a 1-0 series lead.

I've finally finished putting together my 30 fictional team league together. I mainly used logos I could find in the vault. Kept every team with a name the announcers would say, and put all of them in their own stadiums except 4 teams (the NY teams share, and I had to use Franco Park twice since I ran out of usable stadiums), by using all the minor league stadiums+a few classic ones that avoided any really weird dimensions or had team logos visible. I tried to be as original as possible, but I definitely got burnt out a bit at the end (looking at you, Georgia and Detroit). Also I absolutely didn't realize i was completely reusing some minor league teams until after I finshed, but that's how it goes. Also tried to keep a good amount of variety in the uniform styles, some new some old. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

Divisions are as follows:

NL East: Georgia Bulldogs, Cleveland Spiders, Harlem Indians, Florida Tropics, Philadelphia Blue Sox

RECAP: Padres @ The All-Star Break

Coming out of the All-Star break San Diego finds themselves leading the NL West (57-38). Early predictions had the Padres slated to be outside shots at grabbing a wild card spot. San Diego finds themselves in this position largely do to what has been this years best pitching staff. Led by 2020 Cy Young winner Kole Robertson and anchored by closer Train Lucas. San Diego currently sports a team ERA of 2.36. If the Padres want to stay atop the division and make a run in the playoffs they will need to scratch across a few more runs as the currently bottom 5 in several key offensive categories. Scoring more runs would take a tremendous amount of pressure of the pitching staff. The Padres are looking to make their first playoff appearance since the 2010 season.

Newly Acquired:
7/3 - Acquired RP Cristian Torrez and SP Josh Rainey from the Mets for SP Dan Wallace and RF Julius Blackman
7/10 - Sent RP Hitoki Oshiro to prospect SP Ellis Tate Jr.

The acquisition of Torrez signaled the official end of Oshiro's short time with San Diego. Oshiro acquired from the A's along with Cole Dyer in July of 2020 never found his footing after moving down the coast to southern California. In Torrez San Diego adds another left hander in the pen giving them more options to create advantage match issues for opponents. Meanwhile Josh Rainey is filling in for SP Greg Dickerson who is expected to return in mid August from a torn left pectoral muscle. Ellis Tate Jr is a young arm expected to be a few years away from making an impact at a major league level.

2020 All-Stars:

Robertson and Thigpen are no surprise as duo are two of the best arms in the game. Starks on the other hand has been a revelation having lead the voting for relief pitchers for a majority of the season. Starks who signed a new 2 year deal in the off-season was hesitant to do so when he learned new manager Brandon Albrecht wanted to move him over to the bullpen. Well the move appears to have paid off for both parties.

First Half MVP:
(2B) Jackson Gorzelanny | .298, 8 HR, 29 RBI, 11 SB, 23 BB, 21 doubles in 309 AB

While many would think the Padres 1st half MVP would be MVP/Cy Young contender would be Kole Robertson, Gorzelanny's contribution to this team can't be overlooked. For a team that doesn't push across many runs Gorzelanny is a key piece of the teams offensive puzzle. He's a threat on the base path and one of San Diego's most consistent at the plate.

Honarable Mention: Kole Robertson, Percy Hopkins

Ones to Watch:
(1B) Bo Sparks | .330, 14 HR, 68 RBI, 10 SB, 44 Walks in 294 AB
(RF) Salomon Chappell | .344, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 8 SB in 183

Both Sparks and Chappell appeared in the 2021 Futures game. The Padres organization is keeping a close eye on these the two youngsters who are having a break out season.

At only 20 years of age Bo Sparks is looks like he could be ready to take the next step and Padres fans could see him in the majors come the start of the 2022 season. The 6'3 235lb 1st baseman is more than just power but also posses surprising speed. Sparks also started at first in the AAA All-Star Game.

Chappell was having a special season of his own prior to going down with a broken shin on May 24th. This put a scare into the front office but after missing just under 6 weeks of the season, Chappell has picked up where he left off. For perspective Chappell was having such a great season he was still the lead voting for the Texas League All-Star Game.

I'm coming up on the trade deadline and still looking to offload Kyle Johnson. He was stinking up the majors with a +4 ERA and in 3 starts in the minors he's +6. Team teams showing interest the Astros and D-Backs are out. I don't trade with divisional foes and especially won't be doing so with the race so tight so no to Arizona. The Astro's have some solid prospects they are willing to give up but not sure yet. Outside of those two other teams are offering up scraps.

The Padres come in stumbling a bit since the All-Star break winning only 3 of there last 8 games. The Giants came away with a 3-2 win in the series opener last night. On the mound for both teams are two recently acquired pitchers. San Diego's start will be Josh Rainey (1-1, 3.18 ERA) who came over in the trade for veteran Christian Torres and is filling in for the injured Greg Dickerson. On the bump for the Giants is Edwin Rodriguez (9-5, 2.28 ERA) who the Giants swapped for 3 highly rated prospects in a bid to set right their sinking ship as the currently sit in 4th place. Padres baseball is up next.

Ahh so quiet in here aside from me.

More trade news:
*Kyle Johnson (SP) along with two AA minor leaguers AJ Smart (SP) and Carmelo Cozzocrea (SS) were sent to Houston for AAA starter Ron Kuwata.

*Jorge Ramos (2B) was sent to the Angels in exchange for two prospects DeAndre Davis Jr. (LF) and Jesus Zayas (SS)

Both Johnson and Ramos were in the final years of the contracts but were earning 5mil each and we weren't getting a good return on that money. That frees up some money that can go towards contract extensions and free agents in the off season. Out in left field DJ Fader is having a respectable but down year, he is also in the final year of his contract and turns 34 next year and expecting a hefty chunk of change. There are some quality young outfielders possibly hitting the market next year so hoping to snag one of them. If not I'd consider bringing back Fader on a one year deal. I also have solid options on the bench as temporary replacements if necessary.

I'm excited about Ron Kuwata he played for the Marlins in 2020 but came out the bullpen as long relief and had a solid season a 10-1 record in 68 appearance and ERA around 3. He only appeared in the minors for the Astros but was solid. Not only is he good on the mound but can hit and has solid fielding range, so I'm thinking of making him making him a 2-way player he's a bit slow but I think he'd be okay at first.

Davis Jr. and Zayas will fit in nicely with the AAA and AA teams respectively. As I'm slowly trying to build a pipeline system to build from within.
