    Fastball/offspeed speed discrepancy

I noticed the norm the past few years has been fastball speed the same slider value as your offspeed slider.

This year though I’ve noticed quite a few people on here and on Reddit putting the offspeed speed slider 1 notch below the fastball speed slider? Why is that? It seems odd if a 90mph slider is slower than a 90mph fastball. Can somebody explain that to me in case I’m missing the point here (which I’m sure I am)

    Thank you!

Probably to make it more challenging. That’s all I can think of. And I have not noticed anyone saying that, for the record. Most guys I’ve seen mention it are still going with offspeed being a tick higher than fastball. I keep them the same, personally.
    Just one man’s opinion.
I don’t actually care about any of this.

It has to be done for the challenge of the game.

I've settled on FB speed at 7, and offspeed at 6. I think it's also this: pitchers today are throwing harder than in the classic files. I faced a pitcher last night in a game (me vs cpu) - Rockies pitcher (I was SD) and he was throwing upwards of 100, but his changeup was almost 90. So really, it wasn't much of a difference. Dropping speed by that one notch in separation really does help, and I think if you play simulation style, it's a necessity.

        Re: Fastball/offspeed speed discrepancy

I personally feel like the speed differential is too little with the settings the same. Too many times I guessed FB and it would be offspeed and I'd make a little too much contact when I should've been out in front. (I think this is partially part of the HR surge)

With higher pitch speeds in general, it becomes more of a "reflex" vs "skill" in timing one's swing.

Setting the offspeed slider one notch below has addressed both of those issues for me. If I'm sitting fastball and guess wrong, I'm usually out in front enough where I make crap contact or flat out miss. And as I'm going with a higher FB setting, I can't rely on my reflexes now...I really have to consider my timing.

Half the battle in getting a challenging hitting environment, for me, is about upsetting my timing. Since I made the change to 7/6, my ability to really mash a pitch has dwindled (relative to default pitch speed settings).

Well I must be the old man in the room, I currently have my speeds set at 4/5, 4 being fastball speeds... this year for some reason the fastballs get to me extremely quicker than last year, and the offspeeds like changeups and sliders boy they take a life time to get there... the CPU quickly picked up on this and is only basically throwing me offspeeds! In previous years the difference between the two has always been too much. Seems to be much better this year but I would bet that people are just used to the old ways.

Definitely feels more realistic this year not having as drastic of a change.

No. For me, it's because I played a zillion games on 19. It's clearly different in 20. Anything less than 7/6 and I can just get too many hits. I even turned human timing all the way to 0. But each of us are different, so do what you enjoy doing!!

Don’t feel bad, I have fastball speed at 3.

The pet peeve of mine for years has been the number of pitchers who have 20-plus MPH differences between their fastball and changeup. As far as I'm aware, that's just not commonplace.

I know everyone has their preference, but a simple change to batting camera can make a huge difference in the "feel" of pitch speeds.

Personally, I like strike zone 2, but have found that zoom, show 15, and retro work best for me above Veteran level. Depending on pitcher/stadium, I still have trouble picking up certain pitchers (ie Scherzer in Washington's stadium).
