    Pitch Recognition - Let’s see...

I’ve been playing both The Show and Pro Yakyuu Spirits... for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why I can recognize pitches better in PYS. It turns out that there is a huge reason as to why. It has to do with the hand and arm-slot!

Here’s the snapshot of the armslots comparisons of a curveball vs fastball in PYS:

    PYS - Curveball

    PYS - Fastball

Here’s the video for reference - Watch “PYS - Curveball vs. Fastball” on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/401167318?ref=em-share

*It’s pretty clear that the armslot on a fastball is wider.

Here’s the snapshot of the armslot comparisons of a curveball vs. fastball in The Show:

    The Show - Curveball

    The Show - Fastball

*It’s impossible to tell the difference.

    Conclusion:

The Show - It’s not your imagination... it’s practically impossible to pick up the different pitches based on the armslots or hand position in The Show. The only way to pickup the spin is to predict the spin which on the fastest pitch speed is nearly impossible.

PYS - It’s a bit more forgiving since the varying armslots help you determine if a pitch will be off-speed vs. fastball. I also noticed that the curveball arches are a bit more exaggerated which helps with identifying the pitches as they are in mid-flight.

Based off of YouTube videos I’ve seen, pitching animations look so much more lifelike in PYS. A lot more fluidity of the ball leaving the pitcher’s hand.

Your picture of the curveball in PYS isn't the release, the arm is still in the layback position. The two images aren't matched properly. It might be that the arm slots are different, but you're not showing that here.

Good point - I couldn’t capture enough frames in the slow-mo for some reason. The arm drops straight down on the curveball vs at an angle on the fastball. Added the follow through of the PYS curveball. Also, notice how he cuffs his wrist. (See above)

It’s also hard to notice in these clips but you can actually pick up the side of the palm on a curveball vs. the front of the palm on a fastball.

          Good post.

Have you tested it with more than one pitcher from each game?

No, sir. Without going through the effort of recording, screen-capturing and posting, I can tell you it's the same for every pitcher on both games.

Pitching AND batting swing animations look a lot better in the PYS 19. Hopefully next gen the Show 21 they improve this with proper motion capture.
