    House Rules for Drafting?

Does anyone have any house rules for editing prospects? Mainly asking because I get frustrated seeing the first pick be a 51 OVR 21 YO. I’d like to go through and edit some of these players to genuinely make them possibly the next big thing. But of course I know there are busts and what not so there shouldn’t be 30 Stars every draft.

Just looking for a way to maybe see that next Bryce Harper, Acuna, Soto etc. instead of teams using their best pick on a college senior who’s OVR is in the 50’s.

It's true you won't ever see a 19 year old break into the league, and it's very annoying, but I have seen guys break out as early as 21.

One of my outfielders was rookie of the year at 21, putting up all-star numbers. He had a sophomore slump in his second year, but was putting up superstar numbers in his third year before getting a broken hand from sliding back into base. Can't wait to get him back.

This is a 2014 carry over currently in 2021.

Who's to say the players won't be the next big thing though? Were the CPUs other picks overalls equally low maybe they figured their star pick would be available later. Also if the CPU misses out on the next Acuna or Harper that means you can grab him!

Drafting is as much about building a great farm system that can create an environment where young players can thrive and grow to become great as it is finding a future star immediately.

Anyway no rules for editing let the RNG do it's thing it will all work out in the end.

Its the MLB, not the NFL or NHL. 99% of draftees take a year or two, at LEAST in the minors to become viable in the majors. I won't pretend to understand some of the choices made by the cpu, It is what it is.. You could even look at it as 1st round busts happen.

Editing draftees because of draft position/round alone is shortsighted. Players ETA's are listed for a reason. An A potential is still more desirable than a B or C POT, no matter the players OVR.

I always take those types up at least 10 points OVR to give them a shot at making it. I arbitrarily choose which ones to do it with depending on if I like their player model so I don't oversaturate the league.

I also find a couple of those annoying 24-25 year olds with 75-85 potential and bring them to within 5-7 points of their max and use them as the "international free agents" of my franchise.

Making edits to improve the rest of the league is the only way to "increase the difficulty" of being a GM, so do as you see fit to give yourself the most satisfying experience.

My main rule for drafting is BPA. If I can help it at all, I won't draft anyone with an ETA 4+ years out. I also prioritize fielders ahead of pitchers.

1st round: if blue chip, closest ETA, hopefully also a position i'm weak in. Non blue chip, BPA/ETA/weak position.
2nd round: BPA in a thin position.
If I haven't picked a pitcher by 5th round, I'll use my last picks on pitchers. Pitchers are easiest to guesstimate, even if unscouted. Typically this late any fielder worth a damn is gone anyway.

It wouldn't be the worst thing to see 23+ yr olds moved to the FA list. If they haven't gotten drafted, those players would most likely be part of the mass 'retire due to ability' list that grows every season.

If you're going to edit attributes for players remember that 60 is the major league average. That will help you scale attributes to determine how they compare to the major league average.

The only thing I edit is if it’s a 19 year old that looks like he’s 50 years old with a goatee lol

I never thought about editing draft picks but I’m interested now. I never liked seeing a 49 overall player taken 1st overall.

My best pick ever was a SP that I took in the top-5 in Show 17. He was a 67 overall 18 year old with A potential. By the next spring training he was a 77 overall and big league ready at 19 years old. I wish you would see prospects take off like that more often.

                    Re: House Rules for Drafting?

To me the randomness of draft picks adds to the realism of the game more than it takes away from it. Plenty of highly-regarded high school players need 4-5 years in the minors before they are ready for the show. Guys like Bryce Harper who go straight from High School to MLB in less than a year are extremely rare. Go back through the first round draft picks of the past 10 years. There will be dozens of names you don’t recognize (because they never made the show) and even more that made it and just ended up being average players. Then there are guys like Mike Trout and Aaron Judge who are bona-fide superstars that some how were overlooked by 25 teams on their way to the back of the first round. I think the show’s draft model does a good job of replicating that (maybe by accident...)

Anyway, someone else said it. The only edits I’ve made in the past are the ridiculously cartoonish CAPs the CPU generates. Guys named Pedro Suzuki from Ohio with big Muttonchop Sideburns and handlebar moustaches at age 18.

                      Re: House Rules for Drafting?

I want to expand on this with some examples because I enjoy it and I’m a big enough baseball nerd to read Baseball America.

Corey Kluber and Jacob deGrom were both middle round draft picks out of college (ironically the same college - Stetson). Neither pitched a full season in the majors until they were 26-27 years old. But both went on to win multiple Cy Young Awards and will be remembered as two of the best in their era.

Stanford University righthander Mark Appel was drafted twice in the first round - 8th overall by the Pirates in 2012 and 1st overall by the Astros in 2013. He was dominant in college and was considered a can’t-miss pitching prospect who was close to being major league ready. He never pitched higher than AAA and retired at the age of 26 with a career minor league ERA over 5.

Nolan Arenado was a 2nd-round pick out of high school as a shortstop. Scouting reports lauded his bat but criticized his defense and projected him as a future catcher because of his lack of range in the field. He’s won a gold glove in all 7 of his major league seasons at 3rd base.

                      Baseball is fantastic.

Oh yeah, visual and equipment edits 100% on draftees and created players.

I have a late inning fireballer from the Dominican called Ozzie Reyes who had this awkward, patchy beard. Edited it to a full and maxed out beard and he looks sooooooo much better (and way more fitting for a late inning fireballer).

I also may lighty enforce a no flatcap policy.
