Idea I'm doing for my carryover franchise

One thing I have started doing this past year (in the game) is that I am adding retired players back into the game. Previously I was doing like their kids and such, but I'm finding it more fun and engrossing to mix present day players with players from my childhood.

Now I will always prefer real minor leaguers/prospects/college players being drafted over this idea, but I am now in my 11th season of my carryover and I'm running out of prospects...LOL

So in an effort to keep this carryover from having "fake" players (BTW some I don't mind) I am choosing to replace newly drafted players with players of yesteryear.

I am not going crazy with this and just flooding the rosters with Hall of Famers or all-stars, but there are a few there along with role players from when I grew up watching the game.

Thus far I've added 1 per team.

Its been entertaining thus far as I'm curious to see how this plays out.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

the most I usually change is just a few of the names of some of the new players. for whatever OCD reason I have, I like it better when names roll off the tongue and sound right versus some of the (IMO) awkward names. and some of those 18 year old bearded players I have to shave lol

Lol, I just go and get rid of the funky mustache. They look so out of place on some of the players they attach them to.

Are you trying to replicate their career trajectory or is it a simple name/likeness change?

This is turning out to be more enjoyable than I actually guessed it would be.

Adding guys like Andre Ethier, Matt Garza, Pete Kozma, David Eckstein, Brad Lidge, Brian Wilson, etc...has really injected more "excitement" into my carryover franchise than I guess I expected.

Wish I would've done this sooner.

I've done it before and never really gone far enough to see him much, but now that I'm feeling immersed into my Mariners franchise, rolling up on my first draft, I'm between three players who I'll draft in the first round. One is a CF, another is a lefty starter, and thenother is a SS...I'm absolutely either making Ken Griffey III (Which I've done before), Randy Johnson Jr., or Alex Rodriguez Jr.

What makes this enjoyable for you exactly?

I'm genuinely curious because I can't enjoy my Franchise modes unless I feel like they're realistic. Seeing ex-players randomly appearing in modern lineups would feel really weird to me, and it just seems like a bizarre way to play.

I'm not trying to hate - I'm glad you're having fun - it would be genuinely interesting for me if you could try to explain why you find this enjoyable.

I don't know exactly. I guess its having guys I "know" in the game versus prospects from high school or college that I really know nothing about other than what little bit I've seen them play or read about them.

Its cool to see how in my virtual universe their careers play out versus that of their real life careers.

Its something different I guess. I mean I'm all for realism, but with this being my 11th season of my carryover save, while I'm still enjoying my virtual universe, its fun trying something different.

Again, my franchise isn't being flooded with Hall of Famers, as I still prefer to have "today's" ballplayers in the game and real life prospects, but after so long, you just feel the need to try something new. If it busts I'll edit them out and replace them with more real life ballplayers.

                    Fair enough!

I've tried a similar on Madden recently but even with that I've have to try to keep some semblance of realism and chronology. I've downloaded a 2012 roster (the first draft I really paid attention to) and have started a franchise with the Colts. It's fun seeing how guys pan out in the game versus how they panned out in real life but I can't imagine putting players from this year's draft into that roster, for example.

To each his own though! Thanks for the insight

I'm curious - who did you edit in for the Mets?

I've gone the route of not touching any of the drafted/created free agents in the game and it's added a nice layer of having to get to know these randomly generated players. Some of whom have become a major pain in my side.

And while I've been tempted to add the likes of Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil, I'm finding it equally as entertaining when Steve Logan and Gene Worley blossom into starters for me (although unfortunately neither will be an all-star during their time with the Mets)

Right now the only player I've added in for the Mets is David Wright.

Do you set them back to their rookie years and ages and attributes (height/weight)? that to ME would be the only way to do it.. a lot of work would have to go into researching all that info but I think it would
be worth it at least in my opinion.

oh yeah, congrats on the 11 years into your franchise... by the time I'm done with mine my roster is all but retired I will be up there as well. I'm currently in year four of my A's franchise I started in 18.

I just find a prospect that isn't currently in the majors that has similar attributes and create them. I don't edit any ratings.

Just an update on how this is going for anyone interested (probably no one...), but this has really added a breath of fresh air to my franchise and I'm continuing to add to this by adding in some current day players who saw their careers become shortened either due to injury, or the progression/regression "formula" within the game.

For instance, I added back in Jon Lester to the Cubs as he saw his career cut short in my franchise due to an injury. I added back in Anthony Rizzo who suffered a similar fate, but instread of him being with the Cubs, I added him to the Red Sox, the team that originally drafted him.

And honestly some people I'm bringing back just for the hell and fun of it. The Reds have a left handed closer that eerily resembled Aroldis Chapman so I said what the hell and re-created him. Gerrit Cole is an 18 year old prospect for the Yankees, Josh Donaldson is a young prospect within the game, Chris Sale is back, and a host of others.

Again, nothing more than changing their name and their likeness. Ratings, potential have all remained as they are and I don't try to matchup say like a Gerrit Cole to an "A" potential prospect and so on. I just see an interesting opportunity and I make the change.

I truly wish I had done this a while back, because not only has it breathed new life into a franchise that is now in its 12th carryover season, its been intriguing watching how these "known" young prospects develop and how they progress through their career and what teams they end up cracking the big leagues with.
