Created Players in the PS5 era

I wanted to start a thread on what has been my favorite aspect of sports games since childhood: player creation. With The Show now moving onto the PS5 and other new-gen platforms, I am hoping to see a complete redesign of the CAP (create-a-player) engine.

In my opinion, The Show lags behind many other games' CAP engines for one major reason: CAPs in The Show have a "molded from clay" sort of appearance, while other games appear to utilize some elements of face scanning from real faces, which can then be modified via sliders as with The Show's engine.

Below is an example of the CAP engine from the upcoming ESports Boxing Club game, which is being produced by a smaller studio. You can see that the various aspects of the face appear to be based on actual photo scans.

    Spoiler

Compare this with The Show, which does not appear to utilize scanning in its CAP engine.

    Spoiler

It's my hope that the development team at The Show will move toward using scan-based technologies for its CAPs at some point, with an ultimate goal toward making CAPs look virtually indistinguishable from licensed players. This would greatly augment the minor league experience, as well as make historic and fictional rosters even more engaging to use.

Please share any thoughts you have on what you want to see in terms of CAP improvements during the PS5 era of The Show. I doubt we will see anything this year since it hasn't been mentioned thus far, but hopefully by 22 or 23 we will see a new system. I think I've heard that new body models were in the minds of the development team, but that those would have to wait until next gen. Now that next gen is here, perhaps a new CAP engine could be built along with new body/uniform models whenever those eventually come into play.

Man! I really hope so. The CAPs are great for the PS4 era but we need these created players to be on the same level as the face scans that SDS provides for live players. This would help provide more depth to fictional or classic rosters which increases the replay-ability moving forward. I would love an addition like this!

Ditto to both of these posts. I cringe at some of the managers, pitching coaches that do mound visits.

Re: Created Players in the PS5 era

I have created thousands of faces in all sorts of games over the past 20+ years, and The Show's CAP system, while certainly not perfect, is one of the better ones if you know what you are doing and don't rush the process. There are definitely some shortcomings, such as not enough and not realistic looking enough skin textures and some weird eyebrows. There are a few facial hairstyles and like half the eyebrow styles that I never use because they look so unrealistic. But there are a lot of nice aspects, such as being able to layer multiple facial hair styles, which few games allow and it really helps to make more accurate looking players. It sucks not being able to edit the fake coaches though, who seem to have randomly generated faces which pretty much never look good with the current system. I don't think the CAP system has to be totally rebuilt, but with ever-improving graphics it definitely will need some improvements for next gen.

What I would like to see added/improved:
Better looking skin textures (as in Gritty, Freckles, Type A, etc.)
Add base eye shape types, which can then be further sculpted
Add a variety of eye region textures (wrinkles, bags, socket color, etc.)
Add base nose shape types, which can then be further sculpted
        More realistic eyebrows
        More hairstyles (bring cornrows back!)
Two-tone hair color possible (bleached/dyed tips)
More facial hair styles/length options instead of just very short, long, and very long.
        Make fake coaches editable
Generic tattoos (both individual and full arm sleeves)
Earrings, more necklace/chain style options, unbuttoned jerseys, thin rubber wristbands, vintage equipment

I agree with the above message, but would also like to see some additional facial and hair styles such as:

          1. The historic waxed mustache like John Clarkson and other players of olden times wore;
          2. Hair parted in the middle but still short.
          3. Hair parted on the side however somewhere between the short and longer versions in length.

I have also been creating a lot of players and while many of the wild hair styles maybe "fun", I use at most 10% of the styles with players I create. They are just not worn by many players.

I would also like to see added the old fashioned baseball shirts with collars.

            Excellent!
I would add mouth shapes that can be sculpted.
Like to be able to stretch the lips higher on top lip lower on lower lip. Puffed up lips.

Would like to set the features eyes nose and mouth as one unit then slide then up or down on face.

Big ears make wide helmets maybe set helmet width to temple width.

              Excellent post Jolly Roger!
This would be a great addition to an already great face tool.
Eyes are very expensive and to have access to dozens of eye shapes would be such an asset also with nose and mouth.
              Love this idea!

Why are the coaches not editable? I mean, the Yankee pitching coach has a beard for crying out loud! LOL. No beards allowed on Yanks. Give us the editing for ALL participants in the game...players, manager, coaches, etc. Not to mention the ballboy who has a beard and looks about 30.

Managers and coaches ought to be editable. Then it would be possible to create the correct manager for an historic roster.

                      Oh, I wanted to add...

Another option would be for the devs to implement a system where you can upload face photos and the game will map them onto the CAP. This technology has been around since at least the PS3 era from what I remember, and I'm sure it's undergone much refinement since then.

Here's an example from the AO Tennis subforum where forum member RetroDee4Three used the game's face upload program to make Rafa Nadal. AO Tennis is developed by Big Ant, which is a smaller studio than SCEA.

There is NOTHING wrong with SDS created player.. people on here have made the players look awesome and it gives you so many options.. wanna look at a garbage CAP?? it's called madden where they give you 4 face options for 1 skin and some are the same faces we have seen for 10 years and some even are doubles, that is the biggest pathetic joke of a CAP system I have ever seen

MLB the show can take a hour to create a player. I just wish we could edit age weight and height for all players

Yeah, but the entire game of Madden is a joke, so their CAPs being weak is the least of their problems (plus the players wear helmets all game anyway). I'm not saying The Show CAPs are terrible or that you can't make them resemble real players, it's just that you can very clearly tell the difference between CAPs and scanned players. That gulf could be narrowed massively with future improvements.

MLB players are wearing caps and helmets as well though lol we get all those hairstyle options and some we can't even see unless we get a animation of someone on the bench
