CPU won’t attempt to steal bases

I just realized I’ve been playing (franchise mode) ever since the game came out and I’ve yet to have the computer attempt to steal a base on me. They steal when simulating, but not when I’m pitching. Is there a setting I’m not seeing? I have the ‘Baserunner steal frequency’ slider set to max.

well if auto base running that I use I can tell you now the CPU decides to try and steal when I don't want them to all the time!

Set it to the lowest setting and see what happens. It wouldn't be the 1st time SCEA had the slider bar reversed from the description.

After 5 or 6 games with the slider at the opposite end, still no luck The only steal opportunities the cpu had weren’t that great though, a couple baserunners with SPD below 35, and steal ratings below 20. Also, I have Rickey Henderson on my team, and he got thrown out trying to steal second?? (After the slider setting switch)

Re: CPU won’t attempt to steal bases

Just had Tim Locastro of the D-backs (with 99 SPD, stealing, AND base running aggression) hit a single off my Blake Snell with no outs in the bottom of the 4th with me leading 1-0... and stayed on first until the end of the inning

I have mine set to ‘assist’ because, I mean, who wouldn’t want to use Rickey on the base paths?

Going through the rest of my settings now, and I’ve never had my manager get thrown out (ejections are on), and I witnessed my first balk since The Show ‘16 the other day (balks are also on).
When players get hit by batted balls, I remember the staff used to come out and have a pow wow with them, and I haven’t seen that in forever (Pretty sure that’s because I have the game set to fast play and not broadcast or the other one)

Another situation; This time with Garrett Hampson (98SPD, 30 stealing, 69 aggression) singling off of my Emilio Pagan to start the 7th, with me leading 3-1. Same result, he just sets up camp on first base and doesn’t move until the next three batters strike/fly out. There’s gotta be something I have set to where stealing is disabled or something like that

Impossible to say for sure without big sample sizes and not just a few anecdotes but I do believe weird stuff like this can happen in this series. In '19 I liked testing my sliders in practice mode and so often the CPU pitchers would just refuse to throw anything but fastballs. Not all the time but more often than not and I just couldn't understand how it could happen but not be every time. Weirder still, it never happened in any other game mode.

I would ask this: Were the hitters ever in running counts? Was it 3 pitch strikeouts and first pitch fly outs? I ask because in my experience the cpu runs in running counts more. I am not going to steal on 0-0 because of a pitch out possibly. Same goes with 0-1 and 0-2. Did you step off? Did you throw over?

There are a lot of factors that impact this. I have never had this problem before. Also, what is your catcher's arm strength? If he is a solid defensive catcher, this is also another contributing factor.

As said above as well, a bigger sample size is potentially needed. You pointed out a few incidents. I can do the same in my games as well.

Managers don't get ejected. The only ejections in the game are when the user continuously hits batters with pitches.

Balks are user only, so unless you're doing it as the user, you'll never see them as the CPU is incapable of balking.

I honestly don’t remember the counts for either example, and how they ended (some strikeouts, some pop flies, etc. in my past instances). I always play with counts already in progress, if that makes a difference. I never step off or throw over, because it’s been so long (like seriously, maybe ‘19 or ‘18) since a steal attempt on me has happened, that I’ve just stopped paying attention to any runners on base.

I’ll post my catchers arm strength when I get a chance, but I play as the Padres, so I use Nola the majority of the time, sometimes Caratini (For Yu Darvish). Since we used to have Austin Hedges, I guess I kindof understood why no one was running on me, but that doesn’t really explain ZERO attempts for so long.

Makes sense! Thank you for that. I’ve definitely hit Barry Bonds a small handful of times.........

Bummer to hear about the cpu non-balks!
