Best Defense in a Baseball Game Ever

There's a lot to complain about with the '21 release, and I've been power swinging on SDS all over this forum. Yet still I'm firing the game up and spending a few hours each night in custom team practice while I wait to start a franchise. It's time for some positivity.

The defense is awesome. You can finally attack the ball with confidence, and make some game changing plays. You can absolutely feel the difference between a poor, average, and great fielders, and with the extra out they provide it might finally make sense to use glove-first guys at premium defensive positions.

It would be great to see some defensive highlights posted, there's no replay in practice or I would have dozens. I set a repeating play with bases loaded and a 3-1 count, 1 out, and just get the ball in play and field.

What's your feedback on defense so far?

A few years ago I switched to auto fielding because I was having too many errors/outfield dropped balls even tho I was in the correct spot(even with good fielders). I still manually controlled throws.

So far this year I’ve switched back to manual. It’s just so much smoother now and I’m not having the problems I was having before. In one of my first couple games I robbed Altuve of a two run HR which turned out to be big. I scored three runs in the ninth to win 7-6.

From a Player Lock SS perspective. The defense still has a lot left to be desired. I brought the game based on said defensive improvements in the stream but basic defensive principles are still missing.

My perspective is from Player Lock and not full team control. I was able to make a long range play behind the 2nd base bag which was impossible last year so that was nice to see. But the following are critical when playing defense.

      • Covering the bag: If it is not a scripted scenario play you will either over run the bag or the cpu will casually jog into 2nd base. Knowing a play could have been made is frustrating.

      • Cut Off Throws: You cannot cut off organic throws from the outfield. I know how to play SS and know where to position a player. And the CPU will skip right over you as if you don't exist.

      • Strafing as touted in the stream for both outfield and infield is not really there for infield play. Still over running balls on plays.

      • At least your player locked player will adjust to defensive shifts this year. This was nice to see.

That's unfortunate.. I'm judging only from the franchise perspective, though I do agree on the cut off positioning logic being something they clearly don't understand.

But if you told me two years ago that cut-off positioning would be one of the glaring issues I would have taken that in a second. They've come a long way.

I like how you can feel the difference in defensive outfielders, especially corner ones. Having a big lumbering idiot in RF will struggle turning and getting a deep fly.
