Yall handle this trade thread however you want. I just don't feel like putting the effort into this thread I have the last 5 years or however long to have all the new players who got exposure due to XBOX just hand waive it away. The MLB The Show Trade Discussion thread has always been about realism and fair value.

But with that being said, yall enjoy this game and all of the trades to your heart's content

Rather than reply to individual comments, I figured I'd just do a big one...

First off, let me say that I spent a lot of time struggling to actually get immersed into a franchise, because I'd always end up making a trade (or more) that I absolutely regretted a couple of weeks later (for feeling like I ripped off the CPU). The trade forums from the past few years have really helped fix that.

Re: Finding player values-As some have said, I use baseballtradevalues.com. The trade board is usually a good place to see deals that might make sense.
I used to use the formula that was created on the old thread, but there was really no middle ground...The Stanton/Arenado-type trades really showed its flaws.

Re: Actual player values-I think it's important to take name bias out of it. I'm a Jays fan, so I get the whole Gurriel Jr. thing, because you can look at him and see these cannon throws from the outfield, and him mashing the ball sometimes. If you looked at a nameless baseball-reference page, and saw a player with a 2.7 WAR over 300+ games, who has a .278/.318/.487 slash line, and the negative defensive rating, who's also making around $5 mil per year, it doesn't really scream "Huge value player". The site also adjusts their ratings on a monthly basis, meaning that they take solid stock of what the player has done so far this season as well (-0.4 WAR, .220/.245/.320). Before May, Lourdes was somewhere worth around $13.7 mil. You can always look back and base the value around different times.

I'd also caution against using in-game player ratings/prospect potential as a base for a trade, unless you're a sim-only player. I play every game, and have one player with a 70OA absolutely mashing, and another 90OA player hitting around the Mendoza line. Once I'm a year or two in, I just try to find a reasonable comparison when it comes to stuff like this. The same would go for computer generated draft prospects. Look at a top prospect list and compare them to a current prospect. Again, it all depends on how far you want to go with this. It's your franchise, and you're 100% free to play it however you want to.

Everyone can agree that the trade engine in the Show series has been, and continues to be garbage. To me, I use this place as more of a forum for bouncing ideas off of each other. I get that some will take it very seriously, and I can confirm that they put a lot of effort in over the years. I've gotten myself to the point where I have house-rules that I stick to for trading, the biggest one is that I always question: "Would I make this trade if I was the opposing team?".

With regards to the Gurriel example, how would your determine his value if you were to trade for him in your franchise?

In real life, he may not hold much value for the reasons that you stated. Trade for him in game though, and he's going to be a good player for you and probably more valuable to your Franchise team than a real life team.

How would you personally balance this? What would you be looking to give over if you were targeting him in a trade for your team?

I am thinking about starting a franchise with the Cardinals but I think they are too right-handed heavy. How realistic would it be for them to acquire Corey Seager? I just read an article that some baseball executives put Seager's name out there to be possibly traded this year. Probably not likely but if the offer was too good for the Dodgers to pass up they would take it.

Seager is rated 42.6 and DeJong is 18.

I could include Dakota Hudson who is rated 28 but the Dodgers have enough depth in pitching and he wouldn't make the rotation barring an injury. Liberatore is rated 25 so I could do him if need be.

What about

Cardinals give:
DeJong 18 (would give the Dodgers a SS until at least 2023)
Gallegos 17.8 (would give the Dodgers another solid bullpen arm)
Jordan Walker 10.8 (would possibly be another option for a Turner replacement)
Total: 46.6

Dodgers give:
Seager 42.6
Nelson 1.6
Total: 44.2

I don't know if this offer would excite the Dodgers. What are your thoughts?

IMO, the only way that Seager would be moving is if the Dodgers were out of the playoff race by the trade deadline. Realistically, WS contenders aren't downgrading their roster, especially when they're as deep as the Dodgers are.

Plus, if you were in the position to trade where you were trading away your superstar SS, you're not looking for a trade headlined by a guy who has seen his offensive production decline every year since his rookie season.

I think it's important to remember-If you're trading for a superstar, it's gotta hurt. Moving Dejong means nothing to you, since you're replacing him with Seager. Moving Gallegos might sting a bit, but he's a reliever. Cheap relief pitching is easy to find. Losing Walker doesn't hurt, because he's probably not going to be anywhere near MLB ready until at least 2024.

The Dodgers are also stacked. If they didn't have Seager starting, they'd just re-arrange their current collection of IF talent.

If you're looking for a SS, guys like Story, Correa (if the Astros fall out of it), and Baez (if the Cubs fall out of it...but there's also that inner-division thing there...) would all make more sense from a realism perspective.

What we have done in the past is have the person asking specifically state if they want realism, fairness, both or just what's best for their franchise.

Realism he wouldn't be traded because the Jays are going for it.

Fairness he wouldn't bring back a top-100 prospect because he really hasn't been a great player.

Both you might be able to get a 45fv prospect and a lotto ticket (read young and toolsy, but if it all clicks you might have something an example in MLB this season is Akil Badoo)

and if you just want what's best for your franchise you tell us which teams are hurting as far as Outfield production goes and we can at least steer you in the direction of which team could use the help.

Another trade that I've been considering is the Reds trading away Castillo. Their roster is pretty average, aging rapidly, and could do with an injection of young talent to usher in a new era when Votto retires and guys like Moustakas and Castellanos expire. Castillo is by far their most valuable asset, and there was some speculation about a trade this off-season, though the Reds did shoot it down.

How high up the top 100 list should the Reds be looking in terms of a centrepiece to build a Castillo trade around?

Well, I'm using the Jays in my franchise, so I have Gurriel. He's been alright in LF for me, but is hitting around .245/.315ish for me with a bit of pop. Certainly nothing overly valuable, but I'd keep him around that $12-13 mil value that he had going into the season.

For reference, a Gurriel trade on baseballtradevalues that got a bit of love was:

Kyle Hendricks ($21.2)
Kris Bryant ($6.6)

for

Gurriel ($13.7)
Manoah ($12.4)
Will Robertson ($2.6)

If you were looking from the other side, to give up prospects for him (I believe you said you were the A's?), I'd stick with that value. The Jays are fringe contenders, and are on the rise, so it's hard to say what positions they'd be looking to add in, but I'd assume it would be near-mlb ready player(s).

I do feel like if you're trading with someone, and they don't really need to move a player, you probably need to overpay a bit. Something like:
Jefferies ($7.8)+Barrera ($3.8)+Beck ($3.0) would equal out to $14.6, so you could probably take a fringy AAAA type guy like Valera or a reliever like Payamps/Mayza back to even it out a bit. I'm pretty confident that if the Jays moved him, it'd be in a package to upgrade their rotation after spending so much in the past couple of offseasons, but if they're sputtering, this would be a reasonable return for them in a re-tool.

Yup. The Dodgers aren't a team that's going to be selling off players. Even if Seager walks, the team will sign an all-star caliber SS out of the available group of FA's.

That Padres deal is the sort of thing I was thinking about. I thought Abrams + Campusano but I'd be all over Abrams + Gore if I was the Reds. Wasn't sure if that would be too much. It's pretty close on the simulator but a slight overpay but the Padres. I could see Castillo on the Padres in real life too.

I think I'm going to start a new franchise and pursue this avenue in some way. The Reds are my favourite team and I've soured on the whole Athletics thing now. I only chose the As in the first place because I thought it would be cool to try to make their new stadium but it's hard to replicate with the tools currently on offer in the creator.

Hi everyone, once the rosters are released, I will be starting a Brewers franchise & would like to trade for Gallo & Delbec. I am looking for fairness & maybe some realism. I used the Baseball Trade Value site & was thinking Gallo for maybe Ashby & Lutz or Perez & Small. Delbec for Kelly & Perez or Quero & Ashby. I have no idea what I‘m doing. I usually don’t do trades b/c I don’t want to screw over the CPU. Thanks!

If you're going for realism, it is extremely unlike the Padres trade their top 2 prospects for yet another ace.

Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Musgrove, Paddack, Weathers, and Morejon can fill the rotation nicely. Overpaying for another ace is extremely unlikely, especially considering they get Clevinger back next year and Gore is MLB ready

🤣🤣 Well, I figure maybe they weren’t planning on resigning him anyway so it was similar to a trade-deadline deal. And I mean I asked here, and I asked a buddy who’s a Cubs fan if he’d do it and he said “probably.” So here we are. I have Javy locked up until he turns 35. [emoji7][emoji41]

Plus Boyd could totally pan out for them in my chise, which would be cool to see. Something similar happened when I traded Daniel Norris, he was an All-Star for Texas twice.
