Could be completely wrong here, but I'm assuming "balanced" is a solid mix of contact and power, whereas "whole field" is which areas the player typically hits to. For instance, a pull hitter will pull, a push hitter will push, and a whole field guy will consistently push, pull, or hit them up the middle. I do find that a "whole field" hitter will lose some power though-Vlad Jr. was a "whole field" hitter in my franchise and I saw the average there, but little to no power, so I switched him to "pull" and saw immediate results. He's good enough that he still hits them wherever though, so there's that.

Balanced is just an archetype, is it not?

Not sure what you mean by "archetype". But i'm pretty sure it's just another tendency like 'pull hitter' or whatever.

It is just a simplification of the hitters spray charts. A balanced or whole field hitter will hit the ball evenly to all fields. Pull hitters tend to pull more to their strong side field (tend to be power hitters but not a stead fast rule, right pulls to left field, left pulls to right field). Push hitters tend to hit opposite field (again tend to be more contact but not an absolute.)

The extreme versions of these 2 is just more so.

I prefer using a whole field hitter. Camera angles don't always let you see is the infield has shifted, so knowing you can adjust to hit pull or push given the scenario, makes it more comfortable. IMO.
