How to Get a Realistic Number of Walks in MLB The Show 21

When it comes to realism in sports games, some of the major titles are definitely better...

Good advice, I'm already following most of it, except classic pitching which I abandoned a few years ago. I found that too many pitches missed over the plate instead of off it, and it became too tough to aim for the corners. The result was more hits and home runs but not as many walks...Many times I was unable to intentionally pitch around guys.

I'd also recommend turning off the pitch trail and vibration. That way, you have to use feel only to direct your pitches. Each pitch starts, breaks, and ends differently so you have to try to get for a feel for individual pitch type too. I give up a decent number of walks doing this. Still not enough to be realistic but it's decent enough.

I follow most of these guidelines as well, but I can't quite bring myself to try classic pitching. I just don't want to give up that control (pun intended). I hope that they tweak Pinpoint-Pitching next year and make it a bit more difficult to get "perfect-perfect" inputs. The first couple games I played with it this year it was pretty difficult to throw strikes, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly and can pretty much throw the ball wherever I need to.

A couple of my own guidelines I follow: Turning off the strike zone and the ball marker. Pitchers don't have either of those visual queues IRL so why should you! I keep the vibration on as I really like the haptic feedback in the game, but one of my biggest wish-list items is to be able to turn off the strike zone vibration but leave on haptic feedback for the rest of the game.

See this is why I think some believe of a comeback code. They pound the zone too much and eventually CPU picks up on it. I don’t seem to have a problem with walks given up as I’m somewhere in the middle. You’d be surprised how much the CPU swings and misses at a first pitch ball.

This so much. If you are getting "realistic" CPU offense without walks then the sliders are too easy. If you as a player aren't scarred to death to throw a strike to Mike Trout with your worst pitcher in a big situation, your slider settings are bad.

Possibly an unpopular method, but ever since quick counts became a thing, I've actually been able to have an accurate walk rate on both sides. The only number that gets skewed for me is my own K rate when I'm batting, but it seems to just be offset by fewer batted outs.

Average, OBP and slugging percentage are all reasonably similar to where my team *should* be at.

I've said this for years and I have played with classic pitching for a long time now. Every other pitching mechanic is essentially possible to master, there's no way to master classic pitching. It's the best pitching option for those wanting player ratings to play the biggest role.

Good article. I'd like to add a little bit of context about the control slider and why it can have a big impact on the subject being discussed.

This year with the introduction of Perfect Accuracy Region we can see very clearly what the control slider does - it increases or decreases the size of the PAR, making for a larger/smaller area that a "perfect" pitch can land in. This can be seen very clearly by manipulating the slider mid-game with the aiming UI turned on - the gray circle graphic changes size when you change the slider and unpause the game.

For breaking pitches especially, this circle can get very large on the higher difficulty levels, which creates the possibility of "hanging" a pitch that was aimed at the lower edge of the strike zone, and having it land in the middle instead. This is, obviously, not ideal for the pitcher. So it comes back to pitching conservatively, as others have said in this thread. For breaking pitches like curves and changeups, I usually only want a small part of the PAR circle to be inside the strike zone - because I don't want to risk throwing a hanging curveball on perfect input. There's still a risk of throwing one on imperfect input, but at least if that happens then I know it was my fault.

Getting back to the topic at hand, pitching like this, especially to good hitters where you don't want ANYTHING left over the middle of the plate, naturally creates walks. And lowering the control slider should theoretically increase them even more, because you have to account for the PAR circle being even larger.

Kind of going hand in hand with pitching to the corners is don’t be afraid to walk anyone if you have a three-ball count. I actually intentionally walked a guy yesterday when I fell behind 3-1 in a big spot with first base open. Sometimes, a walk is the better option.

Yep, especially with two outs and a base open.

I also use Quick Counts as my main driving method as "last resort" rather than go to classic pitching.

I just find it to be the best possible option for me with meter pitching. My hands are reasonably shaky, so it's pretty much impossible for me to master it anyway.

Pretty honored to be mentioned in an Operation Sports article so thanks for that! I also wanted to jump in to say bryanm1982 is a big part of where the sliders are at now, so hats off to him as well. Definitely the best MLBTS game to date as unpopular an opinion that may be.
