There is an independent game store here in the Los Angeles area that I used to be able to get the game early from. They would usually get it anywhere from Wednesday to Friday before release if on the following Tuesday.

Then one year I think around maybe ‘19 the studios started shipping the games the Monday before release instead of a week before. So I just stopped trying to get it early. With UPS being so reliable these days they really don’t have to make sure the stores are getting the game a week ahead anymore. Also cuts down on the risk of people getting the game early and streaming and what not

He could work for a gaming site and they send him early common. That is quite common for people who write about games.

I can't speak for him but he's typically gotten it early from a physical store in his area. When we had the when/where thread annually he was always one of the first to get it.

I used to drive 90 minutes to the LA area to get the game early. The first time that I got the game early i felt like a king. I had to take a picture with my screen name and put it in the where & when thread. Those were the days. Now I just pay a little extra and get to play a few days early. I miss the feeling of being one of the few that were able to find it early.

Yep those were the days. I happened to be down in Maryland one year around launch and got a tip from another OSer where I could get the game in that thread. Was such a cool feeling and it was the only time I ever got it early.

The digital era has pretty much killed that but CB seems to have a solid spot that is able to come through pretty much every year.
