I managed to lose that second game 5-4 in the eleventh even after Hader loaded the bases with two outs

      APRIL 11-12: FLAGSTAFF (9-3) @ SCOTTSDALE (4-8)
Stadium: Salt River Fields (Capacity: 9,984)

      April 11: Hops 3, Scorpions 1
      April 12: Hops 13, Scorpions 0

Scottsdale, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff completed a two game sweep of the Scorpions at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale to complete their opening road trip of 2023.

The Hops took the opener of the series in Scottsdale 3-1. Robbie Westbrook homered twice and the Hops staffed allowed just three hits in the victory.

Scottsdale would take a 1-0 lead in the first on a Mark Griffin RBI single that scored Martin Perez. That would be the extent of the Scorpions offense.

In the fifth, Robbie Westbrook hit a two-run home run off of Jamie Pacheco to put the Hops in front to stay. Westbrook would add a solo homer in the eighth.

Shoe-Lace O-Tying (2-0) picked up the win, pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run on just two hits. He struck out five and walked two. Vic Miller pitched the ninth to earn his six save.

Art Mason’s 16 game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0 for 4.

In the finale, the Hops scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning on their way to a 13-0 victory. Art Mason, Josh Ortega and Oscar Aleman each drove in three runs as the Hops won their third straight.

The first inning saw the Hops bring 15 men to the plate, scoring a franchise record 12 runs. They did it with only one home run, an Oscar Aleman two-run shot into the teeth of a 15 MPH wind, blowing straight in from center on a sunny, but cool April afternoon.

Ryan Pressley tossed a complete game, two-hitter, striking out four and not issuing a walk to improve to (2-0).

The Scorpions (4-8) managed just five hits and one run in the two game sweep, facing the two best pitchers on the Flagstaff staff.

The Hops (9-3) will return home for a seven game home stand with four against El Paso (6-6) and three against the defending champion San Antonio Javelinas (6-7).

Around the League: Javean Cooper hit a home run and drove in all four runs as Albuquerque defeated their rivals Rio Rancho 4-0. Alex Sbarbori (2-0) tossed seven shutout innings, striking out ten and walking six in the victory. Andy Sacramento tossed a complete game, seven hit shutout as Tucson defeated Santa Fe 4-0. Sacramento struck out seven and walked two as he improved to (2-1).

Ryne Rodriguez improved to (3-0) on the young season as he tossed 8.2 shutout innings, striking out eight, as Rio Rancho defeated Roswell 2-0. Thomas Estrada went 5 for 5 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs for the Mariachis as they defeated Goodyear 14-6. Estrada has been red hot early on, hitting .410 through Albuquerque’s first ten games.

The Nationals were swept by the Padres. As previously posted, they managed to take early leads in the first two games and managed to lose those leads in the later innings, while once again not being able to score any runs themselves. What has been an ongoing problem for a while now was magnified in this series, and it would cost the Nationals a chance at taking a series against a playoff contending team. The finale, however, was the worst game of the season for the Nats. They would take a 1-0 lead in the first on a Donovan Casey home run, then lose that lead in the second before retaking the lead 4-2 in the third. And then the floodgates opened for the Padres, who completely went off in the fifth and sixth innings and would finish the game with a final score of 15-4.

To cap off a terrible series, rookie, prospect, and former Padre James Wood suffered a fractured leg on a diving attempt on a foul ball. He has made several outstanding catches this season, but this one may have resulted in him missing the last two months of the year. I put him on the 10 Day IL until doctors can get a better idea of the damage, but it looks like he may not see the diamond until next spring. The Nationals called up Luis Avilan to take Wood's place, since they used a lot of bullpen arms and still have 6 games to go before they get another day off.

As a side note, the Nationals claimed RP Kirby Snead off of waivers, he will stay in the minors for the season but could find a roster spot next year.

The Nationals will play the Cubs again, then fly off to San Diego to face the Padres once again.

Rockies 5 game winning streak comes to a crashing hault

After stringing together 5 straight wins, the 6 and 3 Rockies got absolutely pumelled by the defending NL West champion Dodgers, 9-4.

A 4 run 1st inning put the Dodgers up for good, with a rain delay in the 3rd effectively ending struggling Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela's night. Senzatela left the game with the Rockies trailing 6-1, striking out 3 batters, and getting hit all over the place.

The Dodgers have scuffled to a 5-5 start, after losing the first two games of the series to the Rockies 4-3 and 7-3.

Up next, the Rockies hit the road for a 2 game set in Texas, followed by a mid-week off-day, then host the Cubs for a 4 game weekend set.

Trade news: Colorado is on the verge of acquiring RHP Stephen Strasburg from the Washington Nationals. The trade hasn't been finalized, but we're hoping it's announced by the end of the day.

            BLOCKBUSTER TRADE

            <img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52374412026_8e1968f82d_o.png" width="720" height="144" alt="IBL_header2">

Phoenix, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops and Tucson Roadrunners completed a four player trade on Friday evening with the Hops sending right fielder Rodney Millar, reliever Peter Gorzelski and prospect shortstop Edwin Arroyo to the Roadrunners in exchange for third baseman David Benitez.

30-year-old Rodney Millar (87 OVR, B POT) hit 45 home runs and drove in 93 last year for the Hops and was hitting .313 this season with two homers and nine RBIs in a crowded outfield for the Hops. 26-year-old reliever Peter Gorzelski (76 OVR, B POT) made 29 appearances for the Hops last season, posting a 6.61 ERA with one save. He struck out 23 and walked eight. 19-year-old prospect Edwin Arroyo (66 OVR, C POT) was thrown in to get the deal done.

26-year-old David Benitez (88 OVR, A POT) has all the tools. He hit .261 with 23 homers and 61 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 2022 with the Roadrunners. He comes to a Flagstaff club that already has Leandro Lugo at third, which may make him expendable.

The trade also cleared about $9.5M dollars of salary off of the Hops books.

This guy is the definition of a lower-upside, but polished, college bat with a short amount of time needed in the minors (if any). I would absolutely get him some looks in spring training and see how he looks.

What attributes do you look at for developing pitching prospects? (SP)

I feel like most pitchers I bring up to MLB have 5.00+ era when their OVR is over 80

What sim attributes are most important when developing pitchers?

The way I look at it is, if there weren't these crippling roster constraints in the game, young Tom would have spent 3-4 months in the minors already, given that you signed him directly after the draft.

In theory, as a college bat, I think it's easy to justify a quick jump...if it's me in your situation, I'm giving him a 40 man spot, but also signing a veteran for cheap to compete for the spot with him in Spring training. Essentially a minor league signing with an invitation to ST. If he outperforms the signing, great, I'd keep him up. If not, send him to AAA and wait for him to get hot. Might as well manipulate his service time a bit...

2023 Arizona Diamondbacks All Star Break

Overall Record:68-29 (1st NL West, 7.5 over LA Dodgers)

D-Backs reach AS break with best record in baseball

The Arizona Diamondbacks were just two games away from 70 wins before the All-Star break. Arizona's 68 puts them atop the majors with the next closest team being the Chicago White Sox (65-32).

Arizona's title defense season is going quite well thus far. As the team has had success as a whole, there are individuals within the organization who are having great years thus far as well.

Fourth year center fielder Daulton Varsho is second in the national league batting title race with his .332 avg which is just behind the current leader, Bryce Harper (.336). Ketel Marte and Carson Kelly are also in the top ten (.312 and .308). Marte and Kelly have also been having their own little homerun race as they sit #1 and #2 not only in the NL but in the MLB as a whole with Kelly's 34 and Marte's 32. The next closest in the MLB is Jared Walsh of the Angels who is having a phenomenal year of his own with his 31 HR (3rd in MLB), .362 average (1st in MLB) and 98 RBI (1st in MLB, Marte is 2nd with 87).

Arizona's biggest offseason pickup, Aaron Nola is currently projected to win the NL CY Young to dethrone the current 2nd place man Corbin Burnes who has won the last two. Nola has a 15-2 record with a 2.82 ERA and 119 SO thus far this season. Burnes is sitting at 9-4, 2.39 ERA and 142 SO.

Arizona's second biggest offseason pickup, Edwin Diaz is currently 4th in the NL in saves (27), 9 behind Josh Hader of the Brewers. Diaz does only have one blown save while Hader has five.

                    Home Run Derby
Ketel Marte lost in the first round to Luis Robert of the Chicago White Sox. Carson Kelly lost in the semi final to Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies. Harper and Robert faced each other in the finals with Harper emerging victorious 7-6 (2 min rounds).

The Nationals took one of three from the Cubs to move to 42-81. They had a solid chance at winning the series opener, which was a back and forth affair that saw the Cubs dish out the KO punch in the 11th. Luke Voit finally found his power swing, launching 3 home runs and driving in 5 during the game. The Nationals have seen their fair share of extra innings lately, and haven't been coming out on top in many instances. Game two was all Cubs, who were up 6-0 when the Nationals mounted a 3 run rally late, only for the Cubs to add two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth. The series finale may have been the best game the Nationals have had all year. They found themselves down 3-0 going intno the bottom of the fourth, but were able to score a run in that inning, followed by a three run fifth, a one run sixth, and a six run 7th inning. The Nationals have been looking for some form of offense this year, an it seems as though maybe the bats have finally woken up.

Some further notes for the series:

Luke Voit, who has been leading the majors in HR, saw his lead dwindle to one after going cold from the plate since before the All Star Break. He has now extended the lead back to 5 home runs over Paul Goldschmidt. It's a moot point, as Voit only has 66 RBI and the Nationals can't just rely on his home run power to carry any form of offense.

Nelson Cruz had two hits in the finale, the second one being a solo HR that was also his 2,000th career hit. I'm not sure if it was because it happened on a home run, but the game never did mention it being his 2,000th despite showing his hit count at the start of every at bat.

On the pitching side of things, the team is thinking of relieving Victor Arano of his closing duties, as he blew yet another lead in the first game of the series. There hasn't been a set "closer" per se this year, although the team has given him the ball more often than not in save situations.

Mackenzie Gore had another mediocre outing, showing some promise but also giving up 4 runs in five innings.

Not much else to say for pitching other than quality arms are definitely something the team will be looking for in the offseason. They do have some prospects to look at, most likely Cade Cavalli will make his major league debut after the September roster expansion.

The Nationals now fly to San Diego (without an off day for travel) and take on the Padres for four. The team is exhausted, having only had one off day in thet last 20 days. This may be the toughest stretch of ball in what has been quite a difficult year for the team, but September is right around the corner and the players know that a strong finish to the year could mean a spot on the roster next season.

                          Great stuff man.

My restart franchise has ended. I just cannot find a connection with the team. And for myself that is the biggest immersion element of franchise. I find myself looking for players I drafted and developed only to realize that was my other franchise. I’m trying to make the same roster decisions as before instead of treating it as it’s own unique “universe”.

Also as I thought more about it, if for some reason I don’t like ‘23 or there is an issue or if somehow Y2Y saves return, I’d rather play my old franchise versus that of the restart.

Never before have I been this indecisive when playing this game and never before have I let little issues , some I can help control, bother me so much.

Anyhow I’m back to my original franchise.

I’ve lost so much time this year because of my idiocy SMH

Don't beat yourself up over it, I've restarted so many franchises for various reasons. So much so that I've only ever completed one full season, the 2015 Orioles (still had to sim the last week). Just do whatever makes you enjoy the game the most!

Well in all my bouncing I apparently saved over my original franchise progress and will have to start back in the offseason (2025/26). I was only a week or so in but I hate redoing the offseason. Ugh!!

Silver lining is I can adjust some of the issues that caused me to go thru this nonsense in the first place
