Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

Well this season is going a little too well, honestly don't want to play anymore but were sitting in first place at 72-16 and 20.5 games up now on the Dodgers who are riddled with injuries to Freeman and Betts who are both on thte 60 day IL.

Our top 5 are producing like mad men.

    Tatis .279 24 HR, 54 RBI
    Soto .292, 40 HR, 69 RBI
    Manny .321, 26 HR, 71 RBI
    Xander .341, 9 HR, 56 RBI
    Carpenter .302, 24 HR, 63 RBI

    Pitching is just as dominate

    Yu 14-2, 2.19 ERA
    Joe 12-1, 2.50 ERA,
    Blake 10-4, 2.96 ERA, 0.99 WHIP
    Lugo 10-0, 1.60 ERA
    Martinez 7-4, 3.02 ERA

Hader perfect 33-33 in Saves with a 0.50 ERA
Suarez holding down the 8th with a 2-0 record and 0.67 ERA

        Blue Jays Franchise: 2023

Note: I absolutely wanted to have an IFA signing period...the unfortunate part is that I knew that I wouldn't take the time in the offseason, so I'm doing it now (currently Mid-June, so I'm between the draft and All-Star Break/Trade Deadline). I used the IFA generator in the Franchise Spreadsheet, and followed it up with a random name generator. Any teams that were randomly assigned players with potential under 75 were passed over for IFA signings. Players will be edited to replace lowest rating/potential players currently on those teams rosters. In all, 19 out of 30 teams received a player. "Draft" order was essentially determined by me listing out the teams in the order that I could remember them, division by division.

International Free Agency Signings by Team:

TOR: Barry Bonds Jr., C, Venezuela (78 OA/92 POT)
Obviously the name randomizer didn't choose this, but I figured I might as well have at 'er with him, since I've never played with that batting stance before.

BAL: Eduardo Fajardo, CF, Venezuela (77 OA/89 POT)
BOS: David Marco, LHP, Curacao (65 OA/87 POT)
TB: Hanako Tanaka, LHP, Japan (73 OA/78 POT)
CHW: Rei Harada, 3B, Taiwan (81 OA/93 POT)
MIN: Jose Vazquez, CF, Mexico (70 OA/82 POT)
DET: Mateo Vincente, 2B, Colombia (77 OA/77 POT)
KC: Domingo Ramirez, 2B, Cuba (72 OA/97 POT)
TEX: Marc Rocha, SS, Venezuela (70 OA/76 POT)
OAK: Jose Burgos, LHP, Puerto Rico (70 OA/92 POT)
ATL: Manabu Nomura, 1B, Japan (61 OA/92 POT)
NYM: Alvaro Alonso, 3B, Colombia (71 OA/92 POT)
MIA: Aaron Ortiz, CF, Dominican Republic (78 OA/79 POT)
WSH: Felipe Gonzalez, 2B, Cuba (81 OA/97 POT)
PIT: Thiel Bryonna, LF, Taiwan (85 OA/76 POT)
CHC: Emmanuel Medina, LF, Puerto Rico (69 OA/97 POT)
STL: Vincente Alcantara, RHRP, Mexico (64 OA/86 POT)
COL: Ahn Yungjin, 3B, South Korea (78 OA/84 POT)
SF: Ito Yoko, SS, Japan (53 OA/97 POT)

The winners of the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes, as determined by an MLB random team generator, were the Arizona Diamondbacks. Yamamoto is undeniably the top pitcher outside of the majors. Runners up in the Yamamoto sweepstakes were Milwaukee and San Francisco.

        Quick Thoughts:
-There's a lot more "High end" talent out there than I would have expected. While this would typically give me a bit of pause, it'll be cool to see these guys break through over the couple of years.
-The absolute coolest prospect out there is Domingo Ramirez, who signed with KC. He's 6'10'' (!!!) and 186 lbs. Video game stuff right there!
-Interestingly, while there's some surprisingly high "Overall" ratings out there, most players seem to have a significant hole in their game. For instance, Cuban 2B Felipe Gonzalez is already 81 OA, but has absolutely no bat, and is carried by what could be the greatest speed and defence in MLB history. Guys ratings look like Billy Hamilton +.

This thread will slowly peter out and disappear into the OS forum abyss...

Wouldn't be too worried about whether you're playing '23 or '16 for that matter...Lots of folks in here have been all over the place which is great! It's just a fun spot to share your progress.

If I'm not mistaken you can post your franchise in the 23 franchise thread, even if you are still playing an earlier version. But I'm just guessing.

I know we have folks playing other versions, some historical rosters etc. I would love to read about their franchises as well.
Maybe it should drop the year off and just be called “Franchise discussions”.

                      You absolutely can, my friend!

If anyone gets mad at you, just sick @Countryboy on them! In my mind, he's the unofficial ambassador for the yearly Franchise thread, and if I'm not mistaken, he's back to playing either '21 or '20!

                            2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals (7-3) stay in Washington and welcome the Phillies (4-5) for three games. The most noticeable change in this team from last year’s division champs is the loss of Aaron Nola to the rival Atlanta Braves. The Phillies added Martin Perez to their rotation and have Joe Ross as long relief. Ross was taken from the Nationals, as he was reluctant to sign back with them and wanted to play for a contending team. He lost his starting rotation spot on his arrival to Philadelphia. The Phillies also picked up Daniel Hudson for their bullpen. The position players remain almost the same, although losing Kyle Schwarber in free agency created a lack of power outside of Harper, Hoskins, and to an extent Realmuto. That being said, their lineup now consists of the power bats as well as speed in the form of Amed Rosario, Matt Vierling, and Adam Engel. This Phillies team should be primed to compete for a playoff spot, but the Braves and Mets will make it challenging.

Game 1: Kyle Gibson vs Stephen Strasburg The Nationals pitching staff was dealt a major blow as Strasburg would leave after just 1.1 innings with an undisclosed injury*. The Nationals would need to rely on a bullpen that has been used a lot over the past few days, and will need to make some moves after the game for fresh arms. First out was Colin Poche, who would give up a two run home run off JT Realmuto to put the Phils on the board. Poche would go 2.1 innings, giving up the two runs off 3 hits, walking one and striking out 3. Washington would get a run in the bottom of the inning, when Luis Garcia doubled and then scored when Brandon Drury also doubled. The Phillies would add to their lead in the top of the fifth after Alec Bohm singled in Matt Vierling, and then Bryce Harper connected on a two run home run (This was the 300th of his career). The Nationals’ then lost Lane Thomas to another undisclosed injury** in the eighth, while Philly continued scoring as the pitching and defense just couldn’t execute. The Phills added four runs to make it 9-1, and the Nationals looked as if they had the wind blown out of their sails. To add insult to injury, the Phillies added three more in the top of the ninth, and the Nationals suffered their worst loss of the season, scoring one run on only three hits.

*After the game it was announced that Strasburg had a broken nail and will miss a few days.
**Lane Thomas suffered a strained bicep, and will also miss a few games.

The Nationals called up Patrick Corbin from AAA to provide some long relief. Sean Doolittle was the unfortunate one to get sent down, but may be recalled if Corbin struggles like he did last year.

Game 2: Zach Wheeler vs Mackenzie Gore Washington would score first as Brandon Nimmo would double and Yadiel Hernandez would single to drive him in. Philly answered in the second when Bryson Stott doubled to score Jean Segura. This would be the end of the scoring for a while, as Wheeler and Gore both settled in and had both offenses off balance until the late innings. Joey Meneses would start it off with a single, and advance to second on a wild pitch. Ildemaro Vargas would also single, and then the fun began. Philadelphia brought in former National starter turned relief arm Joe Ross, who spurned the Nationals multi-year offer for a one year deal with what he considers a World Series contender. The Nationals welcomed him warmly, as Keibert Ruiz would hit a sac fly to give the Nats the lead. Brady House would hit a two run homer on the very next pitch to put the Nationals up 4-1 going into the eighth. Mackenzie Gore would come out for the eighth, but only faced one batter as the order was flipping over and Amed Rosario and Alec Bohm are both stronger against lefties. Carl Edwards Jr finished off the inning and Trevor Rosenthal came in in the ninth to get the save.

Game 3: Ranger Suarez vs Josiah Gray The Nationals start off with the lead again, as Brandon Drury hit a solo shot in the first. The rest of the game went quickly as both teams were aggressive and while there was a lot of contact, there weren't a lot of results. Philly would manage to be shutout despite tallying ten hits, while the Nationals could only muster five. The only real drama came in the ninth, as with two outs the Phils brought in Bryce Harper off the bench with two down and a man on first. Harper would single and the Phils would then bring in Edmundo Sosa for Harper and Amed Rosario as a pinch hitter. He would end up striking out, giving the Nats a 1-0 victory and earning Trevor Rosenthal another save.

The Nationals (9-4) were able to bounce right back after their ugly series opener, and the potential injury fears seem like a distant memory as both Lane Thomas and Stephen Strasburg are back in time to go to LA to face the Dodgers (8-5) in a four game series.

I wish the game would update you on major transactions other than trades, as I totally missed one of the biggest stories of this season already.

I was going through the injury reports for each team and saw that Corbin Burnes is out for the entire year with a torn ACL. It happened in the Season Opener, which means his 2023 stats will show he only pitched 1.0 innings all year. An absolutely devastating blow not just to the Brewers, but to the MLB as a whole.

                                June 4: Hops 9, Honey Hunters 0

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff completed the four game sweep of Amarillo to run their winning streak to eight games and improve to a league best (42-18). The Hops are now a perfect (7-0) at home against Amarillo.

On Thursday evening the Hops ran their winning streak to five games with a 9-4 victory over the Honey Hunters. David Benitez came in for an injured Leandro Lugo and hit two home runs to help lead the Hops to the win in the series opener.

Flagstaff brought the offense on Thursday evening, scoring runs in six of their nine at bats and hitting four more home runs.

After a rocky start, Ryan Pressley settled down and picked up the win to improve to (6-3) on the season. He pitched six innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.

Forrest Owen went 4 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs and Josh Ortega went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and two RBIs to compliment David Benitez’s two home run performance.

Leandro Lugo had to leave the game in the top of the first inning, injuring his hip flexor diving for a foul ball. He is expected to miss a few days but no stay on the Injured List is expected.

On a rainy Friday night, the Hops won it in walk off fashion thanks to a couple of defensive blunders by Amarillo. David Benitez ground ball to third led to a throwing error that allowed Donnie Roland to score the winning run in a 4-3 victory.

Amarillo went ahead 3-2 in the seventh on a two-run home run from Geronimo Mendoza. But Dane Radatz could not nail this one down. Donnie Roland hit a blooper to left that Leif Radford misplayed into a triple that allowed Robbie Westbrook to score to tie the ball game. David Benitez then hit a sharp grounder to third that held Roland in place, but Fernando Cabral threw the ball over first baseman David Petrovski’s head and Roland was able to jog home with the winning run.

The blown save was Radatz’s five of the season.

Pedro Macias (5-0) picked up the win, tossing two innings of scoreless relief of starter Juro Yamaguchi.

The Hops stole four bases in the game and Forrest Owen threw out four base stealing attempts by the Honey Hunters.

On Saturday afternoon, the Hops rallied late…..again, this time pulling out a 6-5 victory. A two-out, two-run single from Skyler Lyons in the bottom of the eighth pushed across the go ahead runs as the Hops ran their winning streak to seven games.

Amarillo jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run from Bradley York and a solo homer from Clyde Floyd.

But the Hops clawed their way back with two in the bottom half on an Art Mason RBI groundout and Oscar Aleman two-out RBI single. A Mendoza RBI double put the Honey Hunters back up by two in the top of the sixth but the Hops got that back with an Emmitt Hampton solo homer in the bottom half.

That setup Skyler Lyons to put the Hops up with his big two-run single in the eighth.

Vic Miller came on and gave up back-to-back singles to open the top of the ninth, but then struck out Brady and got Clyde Floyd to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play to end it. It was Miller’s 19th save on the season.

Sam Varela (2-1) earned the win in relief of Sam Herzog. Varela pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Two back-to-back brutal losses for the Honey Hunters have dropped them to (28-32) and third place in the ML East.

The finale was never close, as the Hops would cruise to a 9-0 victory on getaway day. Alex Farmer carried a no hitter into the eighth before it was broken up. He left after tossing 7.1 innings and allowing the single base hit, while striking out six and walking only one batter.

Art Mason would hit for the cycle, going 5 for 5 and capping it off with an eighth inning home run. He also drove in four runs in the win.

The Hops (42-18) will now hit the road to take on the defending Desert League champion Surprise Saguaros (29-30) and St George (28-31).

Around the League: Long Beach dropped their 13th straight game on Friday night as they lost 4-0 to Goodyear. Gilberto Guzman (2-5) tossed 6.1 shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out ten. San Diego’s Gregory Rice hit a two-run home run in the tenth inning as the Seals rallied for a 6-4 victory over first place Henderson. John Berry hit two home runs and drove in five as San Antonio defeated Prescott 9-0 to get back to .500.

Jordan Munoz and Cecil Mills each hit two-run home runs in the eighth inning as Glendale rallied to defeat Chandler 6-4 in a battle of first place teams. Mark Donnellon (8-1) tossed eight strong innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight as El Paso defeated Austin 11-3 in another battle of first place teams.

Stanton Brickman homered three times, including a walk-off home run, and drove in six as Chandler rallied to defeat Glendale 7-6.
