Braves franchise update: Around the league:

While it was off day for us before starting a 3-game series with the Cubs. The Mets played and won! We are tied for 1st at 13-10 each.

The best record in the MLB belongs to the Blue Jays (18-5). Leading the AL East by 5.5 over the Rays.

The surprise team thus far is the Tigers of Detroit (16-7). Team batting avg .288, slugging .501. Leading the AL Central by 2 over the Guardians.
National League best records belongs to the Brewers and D-Backs (15-8).

Only two trades made in April so far: Blue Jays acquired SP Matthew Boyd (Giants) for 2B/UI Cavan Biggio (Blue Jays). Biggio (.261/.370/.979) took over the everyday duties in SF from LaStella .324/.370/.796

Cubs sent SP Steven Brault to the Red Sox for RP Ryan Brasier.

This deal now gives the Mets the offensive backstop they were looking for this winter and he joins the likes of RHP Chad Green as outside pieces being brought in. The Mets seem to be going all in on 2024.
Did the Mets give up on Francisco Alvarez? I figured he’d be MLB ready by 2024

The Cardinals got their man! The Cardinals and Jack Flaherty agreed to an 8 year/$280M deal. The most prized free agent for the Cardinals was one of their own and things got dicey when he decided to hit the open market. But after a few weeks and receiving other teams offers (Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, D'Backs, & Phillies), Jack decided to return to the only team he's known, the St.Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals now have their biggest expenditure off the market and can now focus on how to approach the rest of the starting pitching market knowing they don't need an ace.

With Kwang Hyun Kim coming back, Dakota Hudson under control thru arbitration and Miles Mikolas re-signed (1yr/$7M), the Cardinals can put together their pitching staff by addressing both back end rotation pieces and depth.

Feels so good to have Flaherty back on the roster and locked up for a considerable amount of time.
WOW! Big money deal! Did you have to outbid anyone by chance?

Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

We're at the 2022 All-Star break in my Braves MLB 21 franchise.

We're in first place in the NL East at 64-27. The Mets are 11 back and the Nationals are 12.5 games behind.

Just before the break, the Mets made a big move, getting center fielder Ketel Marte from Arizona for three prospects. Marte made the All-Star team, hitting .304 with 13 homers and 42 RBIs in the first half. Since he's a free agent at the end of the season, Arizona felt a need to deal him away. They didn't get much return. Catcher Caleb Hamilton, a B-level prospect, was the headliner going back to the D-Backs.

We begin the second half of the season facing the Mets in New York. That series likely decided if there's a race in the NL East or not.

          The 2022 All-Star starters

          Starting Pitcher
AL - Lance Lynn, White Sox
          NL - Jacob deGrom, Mets

          Catcher
AL - Yasmani Grandal, White Sox
          NL - Will Smith, Dodgers

          First Base
          AL - Jared Walsh, Angels
          NL - Freddie Freeman, Braves

          Second Base
          AL - D.J. LeMahieu, Yankees
          NL - Ozzie Albies, Braves

          Third Base
          AL - Alex Bregman, Astros
          NL - Nolan Arenado, Cardinals

          Shortstop
AL - Xander Bogaerts, Red Sox
          NL - Francisco Lindor, Mets

          Left Field
          AL - Yordan Alvarez, Astros
          NL - Christian Yelich, Brewers

          Center Field
          AL - Mike Trout, Angels
          NL - Cody Bellinger, Dodgers

          Right Field
          AL - Franmil Reyes, Indians
          NL - Bryce Harper, Phillies

In addition to Freeman and Albies, Ronald Acuna Jr., Will Smith and Nick Anderson made the All-Star team for the Braves.

If the season ended at the midway point, this is how the playoffs would have taken shape:

          AL
          1 - White Sox (61-30)
          2 - Yankees (54-36)
          3 - Astros (52-39)
          4 - Rays (51-38)
          5 - Indians (48-44)

          NL
          1 - Braves (64-27)
          2 - Padres (55-34)
          3 - Brewers (50-40)
          4 - Dodgers (54-39)
          5 - Mets (52-37)

I peaked ahead to the contract extensions. I knew I wouldn't be able to bring all of my upcoming FAs back, but I'll be lucky to re-sign more than one. The offseason is going to be so much fun.

Yes but 8 years at $240 was the max AAV that could be offered ($35M per year)

We backloaded the contract so as to no handcuff ourselves this offseason and next. His contact gets to the same AAV level as Arenado's when Arenado's expires.

But he received max offers from all those who were involved, just different lengths of contract. The shortest was Red Sox as 5 years while the longest was the D'Backs at 9 years.

I was so nervous we weren't going to resign him because I offered max AAV right out of the gate. 8/$280M was my offer during the exclusive negotiation period. I truly think that if we didn't make a managerial change he would've signed elsewhere.

Cardinals sign Christian Vazquez to one year deal

The Cardinals have inked a one year deal with catcher Christian Vazquez for $6.5M. The 33 year old Vazquez spent last year with the Red Sox hitting .226 with 7 homeruns and 26 RBI's. While not impressive offensive numbers, the Cardinals are more interested in a catcher with defensive abilities behind the plate that can handle a pitching staff, something Vazquez does very well.

Vazquez is expected to be the everyday catcher and will likely have Ivan Herrera as his battery mate. The Cardinals also have Andrew Knizner, but they really want Herrera to be at the big league level and learn on the fly while Knizner will provide MLB ready depth.

Cardinals and Angels strike a deal for Reid Detmers

The Cardinals and Angels have stuck a deal that will send LHP Reid Detmers to St.Louis for prospects in return. Going back to the Angels are LHP Giuseppe Reeves (#47 prospect in MLB), 3B Malcolm Nunez (Top 100 prospect) and OF Justin Toerner (27 years old with MLB Experience)

The Cardinals were determined this offseason to have MLB ready depth across the board and Reid Detmers fulfills that. He's pitched briefly in the big leagues (3 games) but not at all last year as he spent the entire season in AAA.

He will likely be at Memphis to start the season but will be on the 40 man roster and will join the club in Florida for Spring Training.

The Cards gave up more than they wanted, but when Detmers was available the Cardinals felt it was important to get him given their own starting pitching depth didn't progress as they expected last season.

Very interesting with how a manager change helped out. Is there a morale to see that may of changed with Girardi coming in?

                      Yes

When viewing the contract offering screen you can see that he wanted a top tier coach (A or B grade)

I’m curious why you made this trade when looking for MLB ready guys but then having him start at Memphis and trading 2 other prospects. I could see it if he had pitched last season mostly in the majors.

I will say I don’t know any of these players. I’m just curious the logic behind the move?

The Tigers finish their home stand with three games against the Kansas City Royals (41-94). They will then head out on a 7 day, 6 game road trip with stops in Los Angeles, and Kansas City.

Pitching matchups for the Royals series
                          Game 1: Eduardo Rodriguez (18-2, 3.24) vs Asa Lacy (2-1, 4.71)
                          Game 2: Casey Mize (20-0, 2.58) vs Brady Singer (5-14, 4.25)
                          Game 3: Tyler Mahle (14-7, 2.27) vs Jonathan Bowlan (1-3, 3.72)

Following the final game against Kansas City, the Tigers placed starting pitcher Michael Pineda on the 15-Day Injured List, with a broken cheek. Pineda was hit by a line drive in the 4th inning (resulting in an inning ending double play) and had to leave the game. The Tigers are hopeful he will be able to return before the playoffs. This is Pineda's second stint on the I.L. this season.

Yankees Take 2 Of 3 From Jays, Sweep Rays, and Split 4 Game Set Vs Astros

Now at 55-25, with July only days away, it’s been a pretty solid Mid June stretch. It began with taking 2 of 3 in Toronto, continued with sweeping the Rays out of the Bronx, and ended with a not ideal, but satisfactory 2-2 series split in NY against a tough Astros team. Stanton would strike the final blow, forcing the series split with a desperately needed walkoff HR in the 10th inning of game 4.

                            Yankees News:

1B Anthony Rizzo Tears Ligament In Finger, Back To IL
The Yankees luck has finally run out, as they receive their first significant injury of the season. Rizzo would leave game 3 Vs Houston after diving into 2B, and the Yankees would soon learn that he’ll be sidelined for 1-2 Months.

Yankees Acquire 2B/1B Keston Hiura From Brewers In Minor Swap.
After receiving the Rizzo news, the Yankee front office got right to work. They looked at internal options to fill in, in Andujar and Ronald Guzman, along with Ranger’s Matt Carpenter, but then became intrigued by Hiura. The 2019 breakout star’s performance and value has fallen off a cliff since that season, where he hit 303\368\570, with a 938 OPS over 84 games.

In 2020, his numbers plummeted, hitting just 212\297\410, with a 707 OPS. In 2021, he regressed sharply once again, hitting 168\256\301\, with a 557 OPS. Now stashed in AAA and on the outs in Milwaukee, the Brewers agreed to swap him for minor leaguers RP Yoendrys Gomez, and 2B Oliver Dunn.

A 2B first, Hiura will move to his backup position of 1B to fill in Vs RH pitchers during Rizzo’s lengthy absence.

                            Next Up:
To close out June, the Yankees stay home for 3 games against the lowly 24-55 A’s. Oakland is without C Sean Murphy, having lost him to a season ending Torn Achilles.

                            News From Around The League:

Seattle sits at 50-30, leading Houston by a full 7 games.

                            NL ‘bEast’
The NL East is a bloodbath this year, with the Mets and Braves tied at the top with 47-32 records. Miami and Philly aren’t far behind, both trailing by 4 games with records of 43-36. The Nationals are the division punching bag, at 31-49.

44-36 Brew Crew Leading Central Over Cardinals By 5 Games.

Dodgers Mookie Betts Fractures Forearm, Out 2-3 Months
LA has already been without Freddie Freeman for a while due to a fractured shin, and just as they looked forward to his return in the coming days, down goes Mookie. Meanwhile, the 44-34 Giants remain in pursuit, only 3 games separating the two rivals atop the West.

The wanting of MLB ready guys was so that if we have an injury or someone is stinking up the joint, we have a player capable of being called up and producing at the big league level. Detmers in my franchise has pitched in the big leagues and successfully, although he didn't pitch last year.

Our arms that we thought were ready for the big leagues or could be last year didn't pan out. Matthew Liberatore struggled at both AAA and AA, Jake Woodford struggled at AAA last year, Luis Medina was decent but kept getting hurt at AAA level. Those were 3 key pieces that we counted on last year to be able to make starts, appearances, in the big leagues but they did work out.

So we made it a point to get more MLB ready arms for our pitching staff so the issue that we ran into last year, hopefully doesn't repeat itself in 2024.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Its why sometimes the updates are more detailed than others and inconsistent. This year, my updates got quite further behind as I bounced around with the idea of going back to '21. I'd play some '22 then '21, then '22 again, etc.. I was going to try to just update and update and eventually at some point get caught up, if possible, so anyone that follows along, if anyone actually does, could see how the season plays out. But I have actually completed the 2023 season and early this morning went thru the playoffs and am ready for the offseason. And I don't want to try to go back and catch up nearly 2 months of baseball and then try to catch up in Spring Training, which is when I normally get back to "current date" and then start the season and the process begins again.

I don't know why I felt the need to explain that or why I think anyone anticipates my updates that they would want an explanation as to why it just abruptly ends. But there it is for no other reason than its there.

So with that, I'll pick up from current day in my franchise and try to be better at keeping my updates current.

Thanks for reading the rambling of a man and for anyone that actually follows along, thank you for doing so.
CB I literally come to this website to read your Cardinal updates for probably the last 3 or 4 years. It's one of my monthly routines. I probably check this thread 1 to 3 times a month to see how your franchise is doing. Usually when I wanna jump back into MLB. So yes I do follow along. I've got my Padres franchise into August but thinking of starting a new one with The Guardians. More of a proper rebuild with a more frugal franchise.
