      2023 Arizona Diamondbacks 04/04-04/05

      Overall Record:3-3 (3rd NL West)

Dodgers stay perfect, sweep Diamondbacks in two game series

The Los Angeles Dodgers are working out last season's frustrations early in 2023. Arizona surprisingly won the NL West in 2022 and defeated the Dodgers in the NLDS enroute to their 2022 World Series championship.

LA started 2023 with a four game sweep of another divisional foe, the San Diego Padres and continued their early dominance with a two game sweep of the defending World Series champions Arizona Diamondbacks.

The early season match up saw Mookie Betts extend his hitting streak which has been continued from the 2022 campaign to 22 games. In game one, Betts hit a solo home run to make the score 6-3. A score that would eventually be the end result of the team's first matchup in 2023.

Game two saw Arizona take the early 3-0 lead after Ketel Marte knocked in Michael Brantley who had been put on base by an errant slider by Walker Buehler in the first inning. Carson Kelly then followed Marte's double with a two run home run, his third of the season.

LA didn't wait long to get to Aaron Nola in his second start for Arizona. Four singles in the bottom of the first resulted in a 3-2 game after just the first inning.

Arizona extended their lead to 4-2 after Christian Walker hit a solo homerun in the 4th inning off a Buehler curve ball that failed to break off of the plate. However, after a walk and two hits which included a grounder by Gavin Lux off of Nola in the bottom of the same inning, Tre Turner hit a grand slam ball into the left center field seats to give the Dodgers the 6-4 lead.

That lead would hold up with Arizona only managing one more run in the game that ended in a 6-5 defeat.

Arizona will look to get back on the right track against Colorado (2-5) as their first homestand of the season starts while Los Angeles will look to stay undefeated as long as they can as they travel the short distance to San Francisco (3-3).

So I just passed the All Star Game in my Orioles Franchise. I am so far in the cellar I have not seen daylight since May. But I just swept the Yankees in 3 game series. So this year has been a success. On to October!!!

No we just stunk the last few weeks....LOL.....

Just a bad time to play bad baseball. But we're ready to reload/rebuild this offseason and get ready for a postseason run in 2024!

          Thanks for following along.

Cardinals re-sign Jack Flaherty and Alex Reyes during exclusive negotiation period

The Cardinals have signed Jack Flaherty and RHP Alex Reyes during the exclusive negotiation period. Both arms were top targets during the period to re-sign.

Jack Flaherty signed a 3 year/$82.5MM deal with a player option on the final year. The Cardinals tried to ge the 28 year old to sign a long term deal, but Flaherty refused. He wanted another chance to cash in on yet another payday should he continue his success. The 28 year old will be able to be a free agent at the age of 30 if he opts out, or at 31 should he opt in. Either way, the Cardinals wanted Flaherty and got him, but Flaherty got the flexibility and freedom to hit the open market should he feel he's undervalued or the team's success continues to struggle.

Alex Reyes agreed to a 2 year/$17MM deal with a mutual option on the 2nd year. Reyes was the NL Reliever of the Year in 2022, and last year he bounced from St.Louis to Memphis and back. This deal gives both sides the chance to get out of the deal should they not like how things are going. If Reyes continues to struggle expect the Cards to decline the option. If Reyes has a similar year to 2022, expect him to opt out for a bigger salary.

Cardinals sign Emilio Pagan to a 4 year deal

The Cardinals have signed RHP Emilio Pagan to a 4 year/$38.4MM deal. The deal has a mutual option on the 4th season.

The Cardinals were persistent after season's end that they were going to address their pitching staff and they wasted no time bettering the bullpen with the signing of Pagan. Pagan earned 52 saves last year for the Padres in 55 opportunities and pitched to a 1.42 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. Pagan will help improve a bullpen that saw a lot of struggles last year especially down the stretch.

With this signing one can't help but think that the rumors of the Cards looking to move Roberto Osuna and his big contract are coming true, as Osuna was upset about losing his closer role last year, and did nothing on the field to give the front office or staff confidence that he could earn it back this Spring.

Cardinals re-sign Paul DeJong to a one year deal

The Cardinals and SS Paul DeJong have agreed to a one year/$18.5MM deal. The 30 year old DeJong and the Cards couldn't agree to a long term deal in the exclusive period, and it wasn't long on the market before DeJong decided to return to St.Louis on the single year deal and see if he couldn't earn a long term contract next offseason.

DeJong hit well in the power category but struggled with strikeouts and OBP, to the point that the Cards considered letting him walk this winter. But with DeJong back it puts pop back in the middle of the order and hopefully he'll get back to his 2022 self and be a more consistent at-bat in 2024.

I had always thought I'd really hate simming some games, and that it'd make me feel disconnected from my franchise, but now that I'm doing it, I really enjoy it. I'm still going to play every playoff game, but playing roughly 1 game per series, I'm really enjoying how quickly it's moving.

I'm to the end of August now. I let the CPU do trades up until deadline day, and then I took over. I did my best to recreate the trades that happened in real life where they made sense. Like, the Angels are still in contention, so I didn't do the Iglesias trade, and Duvall isn't injured, so there wasn't any reason to do the Grossman trade to the Braves (but Grossman went to Cleveland who needed a bat that could hit lefties). But I did the Soto/Bell to the Padres, did Hader to the Padres (and he's kinda sucking in my franchise too with an ERA over 5).
The Yankees had traded for Pham on their own, so Benintendi went to the Angels.

The only deals I made for my Braves was I added Dee Strange-Gordon to be a utility guy/pinch runner and trading away Will Smith.

I did extend some players. Locked up Michael Harris, Austin Riley, and Dansby Swanson to long term deals.

                      2023 Arizona Diamondbacks 04/07-04/09

                      Overall Record:6-3 (2nd NL West)

                      Diamondbacks sweep Rockies

The Diamondbacks and Rockies have already played seven games out of Colorado's ten total and Arizona's nine. Arizona has had the early upper hand in those matchups, winning 6 of the seven.

This second series resulted in a sweep, with Arizona getting solid starting pitching performances from Zac Gallen and Madison Bumgarner (7.0 IP, 10 SO 7 H and 4 R for Gallen and 8.0 IP, 7 SO 7 H and 1 R for Bumgarner).

Arizona won game one 6-4, game two 7-1 and game three 10-3. Carson Kelly had a home run in each game. Rookie Jordan Lawler had a eight game hitting streak to start his MLB career but unfortunately, that came to an end in game three of this series when he went 0-4.

Arizona goes back on the road to face Seattle (7-3) while Colorado looks to right the ship in Kansas City (1-8).

Unfortunately got an "Operation Failed" message when I finished a game, and then got it again when I tried to manually save. This deleted my save files. Luckily I only lost 23 games, so it's not the end of the world. But it is pretty annoying to have to replay the month of August.

We've hit that point where it's a little bit of a grind to play. Despite losing two of three at home to the Marlins, my Braves are 14.5 games up with 21 to play. Just want to get through these games and get to the postseason.

After acquiring Jose Berrios at the trade deadline, the assumption had been that Kyle Wright would be the odd man out on the postseason rotation. But Berrios has had a rough September so far while Wright has been quite good. Unless he turns it around over his final four starts, Berrios could be in danger of losing his spot on the roster in October.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Alex Reyes may be playing his way onto the postseason roster. He's only made two appearances since being called up, but he's been dominant over three innings. The Cardinals DFA'd him in the offseason after he had an 8.00 ERA in 2021. The Astros signed him and stashed him in Triple-A, where he had a sub-3 ERA. We acquired him in a minor trade in July. He's got a good chance to play a role for us in October and beyond.

Playoff picture with less than a month to go

                            NL
                            1. Braves
                            2. Padres
                            3. Cardinals
                            4. Dodgers
                            5. Mets

The Cubs are 5.5 back of the Cardinals in the Central and the Nationals are 6 back in the wild-card race.

The Reds have been ... uh, red-hot of late. They won 11 straight and something like 18 of 20. They spent most of the season battling the Pirates in the cellar, but they're now only 2 back of the Brewers for third and have a shot to reach .500.

                            AL
                            1. White Sox
                            2. Yankees
                            3. Astros
                            4. Rays
                            5. Twins

The magic number for the White Sox is down to 3. The Rays suffered through a 9-game losing streak to all but concede the East to the Yankees. The Astros are currently riding a 10-game losing streak that has allowed the Angels back into the picture in the West.

The Blue Jays have won 9 in a row to get into the wild-card picture. Less than a game separates the Twins from the Angels and Jays. The Mariners are still lurking as well.

I normally make a new save every week or 2 in game. Two of them went up in smoke. Probably going to start doing a new one every series now, though.
