I was also 16 for 20 taking a lead (but I was also picked off twice, which counts as a caught stealing, so I was really 16 for 22). You get worse jumps with a lead with added risk of getting picked off (and the CPU will throw over more if you run a lot, which makes it even riskier in an actual game).

Yes, that is what I've been doing for years, I guess I didn't realize that was what was meant by preload the steal. I was confused because it said something about holding down the button in that other thread and I don't do that. So what you're saying is the 1 step lead purposely gives guys a worse jump than not doing the 1 step lead? That's weird.

Yup. "Pre-load" is just opposed to holding LT and trying to time the pitcher. I say "hold" the button because in a practical sense that's how you press two buttons at once in games. You press one, hold it, press the other, then you can release.

But yes, you get worse jumps with a lead. So it ends up normally being about the same as no lead. If you're being held, taking an extra step is a bad idea. I stubbornly kept trying to do it last year (because irl, players often take bigger leads), but I eventually had to stop because I was getting picked off way too much.

Alright, cool, I'll try that. Thanks.

It's funny how despite playing this game for 14 or 15 years now with the same controls you can still usually learn something new.

The slide step however, is done well in my opinion. Im also glad that my pitchers can now and will use it. In the past, only the cpu team would use it. Just like the extra step leadoff. You cant give your runner the extra step, but the cpu can does use it. I think they even did a good job of velo and command of it. I still get plenty of strike calls from the slide step.
That's the problem at least for manage mode which is the only mode I use.

IRL a lot of pitchers don't use the slide step because it reduces velocity and command and also puts more pressure on the pitching arm. That isn't replicated in the game.

As with several other decisions over the years they implement it but don't get it right. The upside of making it more difficult to steal is in the game but the downside isn't there.

I've finally got a chance to get around to practice this and I must not be doing it correctly with classic controls cause I'm using Ronald Acuna against Lance McCullers as the pitcher and I'm getting my tail handed to me and most of the time it's not even close. I hold the button down and as soon and the pitcher starts his motion I let go of the button and I get horrible jumps and thrown out easily.
