“You cannot afford to offer this contract at this time.” What?

Pirates franchise have like 53m available budget , player payroll only 42m. I’ve resigned several young guys mid season when the option becomes available but now I cannot. Has my max offer at like 400k . But it’ll let me go sign free agents for 30m. What’s going on here?

That’s a great point and brings me to another point (questions)

      1. Is that how it works in the MLB? I know the NFL has a “penalty” that is applied to the cap following season, same principle with MLB?
      2. Is there anyway to check that after a trade? Is it still stay on the budget screen?

After researching a bit I think I figured it out. Unsure if this is how real mlb works or if it’s just the game:

Essentially you can’t offer contracts that result in future year payroll exceeding current year . For example if my payroll for 2022 is 50m, and I’ve extended a bunch of young guys who make more by 2025 and suddenly my 2025 obligations are 50m, I can’t offer any contracts that would result in a future years payroll being more than current year. But if I go sign some old guy to a 1 year 20m deal, suddenly I now have 20 m to offer in future years

I'm not at the PS5 to check but I think there is a way to check your budget a few years in advance to see where your team stands financially. That might be your problem is not the current year but 2 or 3 years down the road?

I see where it shows salaries for upcoming seasons but don’t exactly see where it shows a budget . In my pirates chise in this example, no future seasons exceed 40some M, but it seems like my 2022 needs to go higher before it always me to offer future contracts . Like I said , if I go give Evan Longoria 30m a year, suddenly my “max offer “ allowed when resigning my guys is up from 0 , to 30m
