Maybe they improved it this year.
It can be time consuming, but you can make some house rules. I only move players up and down if they go on an extended DL. It used to be that you could start your franchise with a 25 man roster instead of 40. That worked really well. Even if you do that now it will force 40 men on each team. Then at the start of your season you have to fix things if you’re trying to stay true to the real 25 man roster.

You may see some weird lineups as the AI does NOT recognize names. It recognizes attributes. (note: lineups will hold, but the AI will sub players when starters are tired thus some strange lineups with a normal cleanup batter maybe batting 6th, etc.)

It's not just not recognizing the names. The AI is way too fond of platoons. So you'll sometimes see higher overall players with high defensive ratings sit against right handed pitching. And the batting order logic isn't really bad, exactly, it's outdated. It's in line with what you'd see in baseball from around 2009-2012, but not really what you see today (especially in regards to the #2 hitter, who the AI often sees as the spot for a teams 6th or 7th best hitter as opposed to it being one of the best two hitters typically today).

I also took to using a second controller to start games as well. When I started setting lineups, I got annoyed that the AI would completely rearrange the entire batting order to give the #7 hitter a day off. So I use a second controller, set the opposing team's lineup (giving guys days off as needed), and then switch the controller back to neutral when the game launches.

Question. So with the opposing team you are seeing, let’s say a lineup where the CPU is resting players and you don’t like the batting order, so you adjust that more accordingly and it sticks?

In my experience if the CPU gives a player a day-off and the lineup isn't to my liking, I will back out of the game and set ideal lineup giving that player said day off. Most of the time it will stick but it seems that sometimes you have to make a few more adjustments.

My question would be does the 2nd controller eliminate the possibility of a CPU lineup not sticking?
